Trước vị trí Nam Khuyết Đài, xây dựng đầu thời Gia Long Trên đài có điện Càn Nguyên, hai bên có hai cửa Tả Đoan Môn Hữu Đoan Môn Đến năm Minh Mạng 14 (1833) triều Nguyễn tổ chức quy hoạch lại toàn mặt kiến trúc Hoàng thành, Nam Khuyết Đài bị giải thể hoàn toàn để lấy chỗ xây dựng Ngọ Môn Về mặt từ nguyên, Ngọ Môn có nghĩa cổng xây mặt hướng Ngọ Hướng này, theo quan niệm địa lý phong thủy phương Đông hướng Nam Hướng Ngọ Môn toàn Kinh thành Huế thực tế hướng càn - tốn (tây bắc - đông nam) xem hướng Ngọ (hướng nam) Theo Dịch học hướng nam hướng dành cho bậc vua Chúa để "nhi thính thiên hạ, hướng minh nhi trị" (chữ Hán: 而聽天下, 向明而治, tạm dịch: hướng ánh sáng để nghe

thiên hạ cai trị thiên hạ cách sáng suốt).

Ngọ Mơn có hai phần là: đài - cổng lầu Ngũ Phụng

Phần đài - cổng[sửa | sửa mã nguồn]

Có bình diện hình chữ U vng góc, đáy dài 57,77 m, cạnh bên dài 27,6 m Đài xây gạch đá kết hợp với dầm chịu lực đồng thau Đài cao gần m, diện tích chiếm đất 1560 m² (kể phần lòng chữ U) Thân đài trổ lối Lối Ngọ Môn, dành cho vua Hai lối bên Tả Giáp Môn Hữu Giáp Môn, dành cho quan văn, võ theo đoàn Ngự đạo Hai lối bên nằm hai cánh chữ U Tả Dịch Môn Hữu Dịch Môn, dành cho binh lính voi ngựa theo hầu

Lầu Ngũ Phụng[sửa | sửa mã nguồn]

Lầu Ngũ phụng phần lầu đặt phía đài - cổng Ngồi phần thân đài, lầu cịn tơn cao hệ thống cao 1,15 m chạy suốt thân đài hình chữ U Lầu có hai tầng, kết cấu khung hoàn toàn gỗ lim với chẵn 100 cột Mái tầng nối liền nhau, chạy vòng quanh để che cho phần hồi lang Mái tầng chia thành bộ, với nhiều hình chim phụng trang trí phần bờ nóc, bờ quyết, khiến tịa lầu trơng nhẹ nhàng, Bộ mái lầu Ngũ Phụng lợp ngói lưu ly màu vàng, tám cịn lại lợp ngói lưu ly màu xanh [1].
