Ajinomoto Vietnam Co., Ltd Executive summary Manufacturing companies in Viet Nam are facing continuous business coevaluation To expanding their value proposition, concurrently creating new products and co-innovating services is one of the most significant roles for development stage of business cycle life.(1) Ajinomoto Viet Nam Co., Ltd is the Japan‘s Company that established from 1991 as a food and beverage company in Viet Nam After 28 years operating times in Vietnam, they are coming to development stage and trying to find more and more new product It can be said that diversification strategy merges with focused differentiation strategy has a significant role in development stage By ―Specialty‖ strategy, Ajinomoto Viet Nam concentrated on a narrow buyer segment (or market niche) and strived to outcompete rivals with a differentiated product offering that does a better job of satisfying the specific tastes and requirements of niche members than the product offerings of rivals(2) With the powerful and well-known brand name, Ajinomoto Viet Nam Company can be transferred to the products of other businesses and help drive the sales and profits of such businesses to higher levels as the advantage of diversification strategy(3) However, launching new products and reaching the successful project for them is a difficult question for the company Although the increasing of profit increased year by year, the profit margin of new product lines might not take the eye-contact of managers in this period Ineffective new product development is the central problem causing the negative profit and low economic efficiency of new projects After approaches the research from qualitative and quantitative method, not only ineffective market data analysis process of research and development team, ineffective performance of product investment of facility, engineering and quality control team but also ineffective project communication and pressure form "Specialty" strategy are the cause that made the failure of new product development, specially, Ume-Chan product line Ineffective New Product Development Of Ajinomoto Vietnam Co., Ltd In order to solve the main cause – ineffective market data analysis process, company should build the marketing data analysis‘s process can take the advantages after compare with the rest solution – renting the market analysis company or renting foreign experts and outsourcing data from market research companies With the coordination of research and development department and data analysis‘s company, Ajinomoto can be built the standard to market data analysis‘s process, which have approximate three months to building, and apply many times in the future Furthermore, it satisfies the aim of low cost and effectiveness solution that was required from board of director in Ajinomoto Viet Nam Co., Ltd Ineffective New Product Development Of Ajinomoto Vietnam Co., Ltd CHAPTER PROBLEM ‘S IDENTIFICATION 1.1 Company Background 1.1.1 Company overview Ajinomoto Viet Nam company, a business focusing on food industry, is well-known as one of the top companies in the Vietnam‘s F&B sector and has sustainable business development with its aim to contribute to the Vietnamese food and wellness, and to better live for the future In 1991, the company was firstly established in Vietnam with a 100% Japanese investment capital up to 70 million US Dollars Through more than 25 years of operation, the firm always strives to research and development to bring many kinds of food products, seasonings and beverages with the best quality, safety, suitable with Vietnamese taste It is true that the figures of factories in Bien Hoa and Long Thanh (Dong Nai province), representative offices in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, distribution centers in Long Thanh, Hai Duong, Nha Trang, Da Nang and Can Tho, and total employees nearly 2,400 nationwide are the pride of Ajinomoto Company Co., Ltd The headquarters have more than 600 officers and over 120 officers in Financial and Accounting department “Vision: ―To become the genuine excellent company in Vietnam with "Specialty" in food and health.‖ Mission: ―Contribute to the further growth of Vietnam, the happiness and good health of people in Vietnam, through food culture and food resources development.‖(4) Figure Three stage of Ajinomoto Viet Nam Co., Ltd from 1991 to Ltd Currently, the firm has already gained high attention and expectation from Vietnamese customers by putting efforts on developing many product lines of seasoning, food and beverage products such as Umami Seasoning (―AJI-NO-MOTO), Flavor Seasoning (―Aji-Ngon‖), Menu Seasoning (―Aji-Quick‖), Liquid Seasoning (―Aji-Mayo‖, ―Phu-Si‖ Soy sauce, ―LISA‖ vinegar…), Powder Drink (―Birdy‖ 3in1 ) and Health & refreshment (Pancake mix powder, ―Ume-Chan‖…) During the time of operation, Ajinomoto Viet Nam Co., Ltd has three stages of development: initial establish, development and diversification The first stage began from 1991 to 2000 In this stage, Ajinomoto focused on establish and development monosodium glutamate (MSG) product line – the soul of spirit good in Ajinomoto Group In this stage, company improves the manufacturing condition and building the infrastructure for company (building, human resource, company organization, etc.) The next stage from 2001 to 2014, this is the development other product line from Ajinomoto Group The sky-rocketing development in this stage gave many opportunities for not only Ajinomoto but also food industry in Viet Nam At this time, Flavor Seasoning with Aji-Ngon product and Menu Seasoning with Aji-Quick product were the most investment and maintained the second profitability product Now, Ajinomoto Viet Nam Co., Ltd is growing in the third stage with diversification strategy Therefore, based on those factors, it is able to enhance its value, to continually expand its business as well as achieve a sustainable and long-term development in Vietnam Ajinomoto Viet Nam Co., Ltd was realized as the best monosodium glutamate branch in Viet Nam However, a lot of successful product line in headquarter was exchanged to Viet Nam‘s branch Diversification strategy vision and mission gave a difficult challenging to Ajinomoto Viet Nam that not only creating and developing more and more new safety product but also establishing ―specialty‖ in Viet Nam‘s market Ajinomoto Viet Nam is constantly making our efforts to provide a diversity of best quality and safety food products that meet the Vietnamese local taste Next to that, Ajinomoto Viet Nam Co., Accounting department My major in working is control about costing of all product line in company How long have you been working at Ajinomoto VN? (No need to ask because the participant already mentioned in the first question) Have you ever participated in any new product development project? => Yes, during the time I worked in company, I jointed about over new products development project Ineffective New Product Development Of Ajinomoto Vietnam Co., Ltd 59 Part III: Question about participants’ actual evaluation In general, what you think about the main problem at this time of new product development? If not any, clarify why? => It‘s difficult to describe all of problem for this thing I think the main trouble that we need to facing on is the effectiveness of new product development I mean this is profitability of them Do you know about negative profit of Ume-chan product? If yes, please tell me what you think about the reasons that lead to this situation? => Yes, the Ume-Chan is facing on shut-down situation The main point of this situation is the high cost for manufacturing led to this problem Prompt: - Why? Can you explain more detail about this? => The cost for packing is so much high Specially, the glass box stored Ume-Chan product Moreover, the loss from manufacturing that‗s approximately about 13 percentages Apricots are collected, classified and fermented itself with a special process The loss of material in this stage about two percentages Next, the soaking apricot is taken out seed from fruit or any damage fruit The loss for this step is about a haft and five percentages Last, mixture is purged to remove all of impurities The result of this stage is semi Ume-Chan product The second stage is packing The semi product of first stage is taken out of mixture A part of the rest of mixture is removed to make sure that proportion between water and apricot fruit is suitable The loss of material for this stage is about approximately four percentages (3.94%) After that, all of them are packed as the fines good The special of this stage is that has no good in process at the end of the month That mean the inventory for second stage always is zero You can see more detail of these steps in manual of manufacturing Beside that, the short time using date misses the eye-contact of customer so much Did company have any solution for this situation?
