Class: DA12NNAA Tra Vinh, March 20th, 2016 PREFACE Practicum is supposed to provide students a good opportunity for students to gain experience in a particular field This is a real chance for me to apply what I have learned from school into practice Also, it may be considered as an experienced occasion to help me have a right decision for my future job Being an English major at Tra Vinh University (TVU) is an opportunity for me to experience new things, including study environment, friends, friendly teachers, even extra-curricular activities Especially, the School of Foreign Languages has given an opportunity for all senior students to practice and gain practical experience I have completed six weeks practical experience (from January 4th, 2016 to February 28th, 2016) at Thien An Energy Joint Stock Company (TAE) At that time, I realized that I personally had many advantages as well as disadvantages when the first time I worked as an intern student That worthwhile time helped me recognize my strengths as well as weaknesses in order that I can promote my strengths and partly overcome my weaknesses The purpose of this report is to reveal some activities, tasks, what I have learned during my practice and given my self-evaluation as well as suggestions for students in the next course to have basic understanding for their better practicing The practicum report includes four parts: the description of my practicum place, my practicum activities and experiences, my self-evaluation and my suggestions for students of the next course I believe that practicum would be a very important and vital step for all students before starting work in a practical environment in the future Page | ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The six-week practicum time at TAE brought me an opportunity to experience my specialized knowledge in real working environment My practical duties such as translating documents, getting and responding Emails, writing short reports, doing a research were my typical activities at my practicum place Through this real work, I could improve many active skills as well as accumulate much valuable knowledge I feel that this useful experience made me become more confident and then I knew what to prepare for an occupation in the future One of the most important things I would like to say is that my practicum would not be successful without the help of many people at my practicum place Therefore, I would like to send my most sincere thanks to all of them First, I especially thank to the School of Foreign Languages allowed me to perform this report In addition, I would like to express my gratitude to English lecturers for their help to complete my practicum report well Next, I would like to send my warmest thank to Mr Nguyen Dang Quang – my practicum place Then, I will share some practicum experience 2.1 MY PRACTICUM ACTIVITIES My translation work: On the first few days at the practicum place, my duty was to translate the document “Risk management in Construction projects” from Vietnamese to English (See Appendix A: Risk management in Construction projects) Before my translation, the deadline for the material and its requirements was always paid attention to First, I spent a Photo 2: My practicum few days reading and place finding necessary information on the Internet to support my basic knowledge In order to translate the documents from Vietnamese to English or vice versa, this required me to have my own laptop to such work To my first duty, I tried to translate it as quickly as possible because then I had to summarize key points in English and write a short report later That was the reason why I had some mistakes in my translation Furthermore, when there was something I did not understand clearly, I used to keep in touch with Ms Nga to know more about special words related to the field I was in practicum, Then, I corrected my mistakes and improved my translation products My writing report work: Besides translation work, I had to write a report to submit to my supervisor Before I started to write the report, I first found out the structure of a report by reading and researching information in the field of construction on the Internet Page | 10 know the way to great people From this, I felt like I was really mature and stately PART 3: MY SELF-EVALUATION: MY STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES AT WORK I would like to present my self-evaluation in this part after sharing my activities and experience at my practicum place The content in this part includes my strengths and weaknesses The time of six-week practicing at TAE was my wonderful time because I accumulated much knowledge for myself Also, I had enough time to realize my strengths and weaknesses at work 3.1 MY STRENGTHS After spending my time practicing at TAE, I realize that I also have strong points at work such as my carefulness, responsibility, and independence These strengths helped me complete my practicum well My first strong point was my fair knowledge of construction field which helped me complete my translation work better When I completed my translation, I checked it by myself and asked my practicum friends for their ideas I checked my papers many times before I submitted them Therefore, there were not many mistakes in my translated papers Furthermore, I am a responsible person because I was never late for my duty and tried my best to complete my work before the deadline My supervisor said that I could translate the task at the office, but I had other things to Therefore, I tried my best to complete it on time That often made my supervisor pleased Working independence is also one of my strengths This involves some important skills such as problem solving, doing research, time management… For example, when I translated risk management in construction projects into English, I encountered many difficulties In order to solve these problems, I had to be self-reliant and search information on the Internet Page | 14 Page | 15 3.2 MY WEAKNESSES It goes a saying that to err is human, and so I Besides my strong points, my weaknesses prevented me from finishing my practicum well Typically, I lacked of vocabulary in my translation work from various fields such as industry, technical Grammar is one of the mistakes I regularly made in my practicum period To avoid these shortcomings, I used grammar software, typically Ginger, to check it Moreover, when I did know my limitation, I tried to collect as many vocabularies as possible to enrich my knowledge and my translating work as well I often read news, articles in English and made sure that I really understood them Finally, I got stressful sometimes in my practicum period My assignment was to translate and write a report for submission within a week Because my document was up to fifteen pages, so I did not think I could manage time well Therefore, I followed my plans closely to reduce stress and improve my performance From all of my strong and weak points in the practicum place presenting above, I think that I will try to promote my strengths while I also have to reduce my weaknesses simultaneously Therefore, many people helped me limit my shortcomings in my working based on their experiences and skills For that reason, I finished my practicum as I wished and achieved lots of good things in the real working environment Page | 16 PART 4: MY SUGGESTIONS In this part, I would like to give my own suggestion to students of the next course and to the School of Foreign Languages Practicum created an opportunity for me to apply my theory knowledge into practice before graduating Besides that, I would like to give some suggestions for students about finding a good practicum place and for School of Foreign Languages about improving the quality of practicum for next students To students of the next course: First, as a practicum student, I understand their anxiousness and hesitation in choosing available practicum places That makes some students leave their practicum places after a few days due to unexpected situations This could not only bring many disadvantages to them, but also to the places where they are practicing Therefore, I would like to recommend that students of the next course should find suitable practicum places where are relevant to their future jobs I think that some faculties and offices at TVU are very good places for English majors practicing such as Center for International Collaboration in Education and Training, Center for Teaching and Training, Victory Center for Informatics and Foreign Languages Students can contact with those places for further information More importantly, students should meet their instructors before going to practice so that they can grasp useful information timely about how to write a report or how to arrange appropriate information To the School of Foreign Languages: I realized that soft skills play a crucial part in my practicum period Therefore, it will be better if every English major student should be guided to prepare certain courses related to soft skills, especially presentation and time management Overall, practicum is considered as an important opportunity for students to learn and experience new things in an unfamiliar working environment To have good results for the practicum, I think the school of foreign languages should organize a workshop before practicum time for students to discuss together about problems that may happen during Page | 17 the practicum time I hope that my suggestions can give students of the next course insight into the practicum period APPENDIXES Appendix A: Translation materials in my practicum period Vietnamese version A Đánh giá, phân loại rủi ro: - Trong kinh tế management is a critical component of any successful management strategy This is the typical knowledge throughout the management process - The success parameters for any project are in time completion (early or late), cost (within or beyond specific budget), and technical features (passed or fail satisfaction) The main barriers for their achievement are the change in the project environment The risk multiplies with the time and the size of the project - Risk management is probably the most difficult aspect of project management A project manager must be able to recognize and identify the root causes of risks and to trace these causes to find out appropriate measures in order to follow, prevent, and treat even transfer risk responsibility to other parties - Risk may occur any time, from the inception stage to completion Therefore, the planning of risk management in the project at the inception phase will be the basis for important decisions such as choosing the link, selecting construction methods, construction methods are essential - Managing risks in construction projects has been recognized as a very important process in order to achieve project objectives in terms of time, cost, quality, safety, and environmental sustainability Project risk management is an iterative process: the Page | 21 process is beneficial when performing in a systematic manner throughout the lifecycle of a construction project, from the planning stage to completion - Such large construction projects will have higher risks, due to factors such as area of planning, large-scale designing The complexity of the various beneficial groups, large-scale resources, project implementation in a long time, environmental factors, economic circumstances, political and legal regulations are also more complex In project management, having nine aspects: Project integration management (The process is combined many different movements or elements are combined with a common function) Project risk management Project scope management Project time management Project cost management Project quality management Project human resource management Project procurement management Project communication management Although these knowledge areas are all equally important from a project manager’s point of view, in practice a project manager might determine the key areas that will have the greatest impact on the outcome of the project Risk management areas must be done from the early stages of a project, including the following steps: • Risk management planning; • Risk identification; - Qualitative risk analysis; - Quantitative risk analysis; • Risk response planning; • Risk monitoring and control Risk management processes are established in detail for the overall risk management, and administrate each type of risks Page | 22 separately, by type of business, each division and for the whole project Risk management processes include provisions aimed identification, classification, assessment - estimated (analyze and quantify if possible), tracking, monitoring (reporting, frequency reported rates of risk, risk status), control, mitigation, prevention and handling potential risks Risk identification  Risk classification  evaluation and estimation of risk  risk treatment  risk management Risk management policies must have its own management policies, tailored for each type of risk Management policies for each risk implementation must include at least: risk definition and risk identification for the same kind; the goal of this kind of risk management; risk management structure (tracking, monitoring, quantitation, report, approval, handling, frequency of reports, sample reports, check and adjust risk management policies ); treatments such as risks; Risk management processes are respectively: Page | 23 Establish the context Exchange informatio n and cooperatio n Identify risks affecting objectives Evaluate the impact and risks likelihood Control, scan and report the activities and effective risk managemen t methods Evaluate risk by priority mode Respond to risks “Risk is an easy, iterative process in the lifecycle of project” Detailed and specific assessment of opportunities/risks from the aspects: requirements, time, cost, quality, human resources, communications, procurement, bidding and appropriate policy Opportunities and risks of the projects come from all areas of knowledge The successful completion of a field would bring greater chance of success for the project The application of risk management in all the areas of knowledge would be an optimal approach to eliminate the risk and develop opportunities from different perspectives Page | 24 Appendix B: The pictures of machines and equipment
