Conclusion 17 Writer: Nguyen Thi Dieu Thu [1]  Teaching method experience I. Introduction Teaching is considered as one type of art. What to teach, how to teach and what kind of teaching aids to use to make our lessons more effective are the most important issues for each teacher. English is a communicative subject, so teaching aids such as pictures, posters, real things and so on are very necessary. Without them, English lessons become boring and unattractive. Nowadays, thanks to the supporting of Information Technology (IT) teaching and learning English have had a remarkable development. It not only helps teachers save time but also makes students access to their lessons easier, so applying IT in teaching becomes an essential task. Basing on this demand, I would like to share with you my ideas about how to use Microsoft PowerPoint in teaching English. Microsoft PowerPoint can be applied to teaching vocabulary, grammar, listening, speaking, reading, writing skills or organizing games in English classes. However, in this report I only discuss about applying Microsoft PowerPoint to teaching and checking vocabulary as well as organizing games in English classes. Writer: Nguyen Thi Dieu Thu [2]  Teaching method experience II. Applying Microsoft PowerPoint to making lesson plans to teach vocabulary Teaching vocabulary is one of the basic requirements for a lesson. In each lesson, there may be several new words which are the keys to understand sentences or even all the lesson. If students do not understand the new words, their learning will be very difficult and not effective. Therefore, I always provide my students with important new words in each lesson in different ways such as using visuals, realia, mime, situations, examples, synonym, antonym and translation. Depending on each word or word phrase I select a suitable technique to elicit what I need from my students. Of course, when using realia, mime, synonym or antonym we don’t need to apply PP. However, I myself have realized that applying PP to teaching vocabulary with pictures, situations, and examples is very suitable and effective. 1. Applying MS PowerPoint to teaching vocabulary with pictures Pictures can be regarded as a useful “weapon” of teachers in teaching vocabulary. Lovely and colorful pictures always attract our students. Looking at pictures and finding out correlative words seem easy for them, thus new words are also more deeply remembered. However, the current problem is that in order to have suitable and beautiful pictures, we often must spend so much time, energy and even money on preparation like collecting, drawing, printing, taking them to school and then keeping them for a long time. Especially, when there is a big amount of pictures it can be a difficulty for teachers. In this situation, using PP is the best solution. It helps us save time and energy. Some people think that applying PP is very complicated. However, let’s look at my following example it’s so simple. In Grade 8, Unit 14 – Lesson 3: Listen – Grade 8, I prepare to teach the word “snorkel” as following Writer: Nguyen Thi Dieu Thu [3]  Teaching method experience  Step 1: Click right mouse on the picture which you want to insert (in this situation, it is the picture of “snorkel”), select Copy.  Step 2: At the slide that needs inserting picture, Click right mouse, select Paste.  Step 3: Resize the picture until it’s suitable with my slide. Writer: Nguyen Thi Dieu Thu [4]  Teaching method experience  Step 4: Add effect(s) by clicking “Slide show” menu | Custom Animation | Add Effect | Entrance | (one effect which I like). I often also write suggesting questions below the pictures to help my students find out words or word phrases more easily. For example:  Step 1: Click the Text box icon on the Drawing toolbar then press and hold the left mouse button on the slide to draw a Text box under the picture. Writer: Nguyen Thi Dieu Thu [5]  Teaching method experience  Step 2: Type the question “What kind of sport is this?” in the Text box.  Step 3: Add Effect to the Text box (see picture 4) 2. Applying MS PowerPoint to making lesson plans to teach vocabulary with examples Giving examples to elicit new words from students is also an effective method. Teaching vocabulary using examples helps students not only know about the meaning of the words, their pronunciation… but also understand their forms and how to use them. With good students I can only speak out my examples. They listen to me and then find out words or word phrases. However, with the students whose listening skill is not good enough to understand my examples, showing examples on the screen is necessary. It’s much easier for them to find out words or word phrases by both listening to my examples and looking at the examples on the screen. For example: In Grade 8 (Unit 4: Our past – Lesson 1: Getting started - Listen and Read) I prepare to teach the word “folktale” with the following steps:  Create a Text box (see Picture 6) and type my example with a blank where the target words will be inserted in. So Dua, Cay Khe, Cay Tre Tram Dot are …………  Create another text box and type the target word “folktale”. folktale  Add effects to target word (see picture 4)  Drag and drop the second text box into the blank in the first text box. Writer: Nguyen Thi Dieu Thu [6] Picture 2: Step 2 After playing video games all day, I feel tired and dizzy  Teaching method experience 3. Applying MS PowerPoint to making lesson plans to teach vocabulary with situations. Besides pictures and examples, situations are also one kind of teaching aids which I often use to teach vocabulary. The steps to prepare a slide show with situations are the same as the ones with examples. In Unit 15: Going out. Lesson 2: A2 - A3 (Grade 7), the word “dizzy” is prepared to teach like this: III. Applying MS PowerPoint to making lesson plans to check vocabulary To help students remember new words and revise the words we have several techniques such as: matching, Rub out and remember, what and where, bingo, crossword, ect… With the support of MS PowerPoint, I can arrange a lot of interesting activities through which checking vocabulary is carried out. And these are some of typical examples 1. Matching My students are asked to match pictures with suitable words or word phrases. The steps are done as following:  Insert pictures into a slide (see picture 1 and 2)  Insert text boxes and type words or word phrases (words or word phrases are put in a random order compared with the picture order).  Draw lines to match pictures with suitable words or word phrases.  Add Effect to lines (see picture 4) For example: in Unit 4: Our past - Lesson 4: Read, I check the following words: “rag, folktale, Little Pea, Stout Nut” Writer: Nguyen Thi Dieu Thu [7]  Teaching method experience folktale Stout Nut rag Little Pea 2. Rub out and remember (R.O.R) In this technique, teachers ask students to read word by word, then rub out word by word and students are required to repeat the rubbed words in the right order. Steps are done as following:  Select textboxes and type words or word phrases.  Number the words  Make the words or word phrases disappear one by one by selecting Add Effect | Exit | (choose one effect I like). For examples in Unit 1: My friends – Lesson 1: Getting Started – Listen and Read (Grade 8). I check the following words: Writer: Nguyen Thi Dieu Thu [8] . students is also an effective method. Teaching vocabulary using examples helps students not only know about the meaning of the words, their pronunciation… but also understand their forms and how
