Unit 7: The Mass Media (continued) Lesson 4 – Writing. Date: 24/11/2009. Class: 10A1 – K64. School: Luong Ngoc Quyen senior high school. Trainee: Bui Thi Thu Huong. Coach: Ngo Kim Thuy. I. Aim: - Students write about advantages and disadvantages of mass media. II. Objective: - By the end of the lesson, students are able to write about advantages and disadvantages of mass media. III. Teaching aids: - Board, chalk, textbook. IV. Procedure: Time Teacher’s activities Students’ activities 6’ A. Warm-up : - Ask Ss to play game: Hang man. Instruction: The whole class will divide into 2 groups. Each group has your own word to guess. You will guess a letter in your words one by one until you can speak out the whole word. For example, Firstly I will tell you how many letter are in the word, if you think the word contain letter ”B” so say “B” and I will tell you if you are right or wrong. If you right I will write the letter you say on the board, if you wrong I will draw here like that ( drawing hanging-man shape), if you guess wrongly the second time I will draw here…You will lose the game when the hanging-man be shaped and win if you can speak out the whole word correctly. Are you clear? Given words: ENTERTAINMENT- VISUALLY - Ask Ss about the topic of writing: What is the writing’s - Play game. topic today? ( The advantages and disadvantages of the mass media) - Answer. 10’ 15’ Pre-writing - Ask Ss to read task 1 and find out new words. - Vocabulary: Memorable (adj) ['memərəbl]: very important or easy to remember. Relax (v): to make sb calmer. Global (adj): affecting the whole word. be aware of (v) : realize Enjoyable (adj) : pleasant Brain (n): an organ inside our head. Encourage (v) [in'kʌridʒ]: to support sb. Violent (adj): a bad emotion, which is intended to hurt sb. Interfere with (v): get in the way of something. - Provide some examples. E.g., Michael Jackson is a memorable singer. Having a bath can help you relax after a working day. Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth. Most of governments are aware of the risk of pollution. Don't interfere with me when I'm working. Halloween is an enjoyable holiday. The brain is the centre of the nervous system. Her parents encouraged her in her studies. Violent images can make children become cruel. - Ask Ss to read new words after Ts. - Guide Ss about the style and tense(Narrative – Present Simple) While-writing: - Read aloud the instruction of the task, and then explain it. - Divide the whole class into 3 groups. - Ask each group to work in pairs in 5’ about one of the mass media. - Go around the class and help Ss if necessary. - Call some pairs to discuss together (one ask- one answer). Answer suggested : Advantages Disadvantages Radio - Make people relax: listen to music, news, etc. - Not harm eyes - Broaden knowledge and understanding. - Update new - Take time. - Make people more passive. - Make people lazier. - Boring: no films. - Read and find new words. - Copy down on their notebook. - Listen. - Read after Ts - Listen. - Discuss the given question. 12’ information. - Provide entertainment. Post-Writing: - Ask Ss to write a paragraph about the advantages and disadvantages of one of the mass media in 5’, use the information you have discuss in Task 2. - Guide: You can use narrative style and present simple tense to write. To introduce the sequence: use Firstly, First of all… To add an idea: use In addition or In addition to… To compare: use But, However, In the other hand… To give a conclusion: use On the whole… - Call some Ss to read aloud their paragraph to check. - Write a paragraph. - Listen. - Read aloud their text. 2’ Homework: - Write a paragraph about the advantages and disadvantages of all types of the mass media. - Prepare for the next lesson. - Do the homework at home.
