UNIT 9: A FIRST-AID COURSE Lesson 1: Getting started & Listen and Read I. Objective: By the end of the lesson, sts will be ale to know what they would do in the situations which require first aid. II. Language content : 1. vocabulary :first –aid , bleed , bee-sting , emergency,wound , ambulance ,calm down fell 2. Grammar : revision ( present simple , past simple , future simple ) III. Techniques: chatting, pairwork, groupwork, feedback IV. Teaching Aids: Textbook, pictures on page 80, drawing, cassette V. Procedures: Teacher and students’ activitives Contents Warm up - Ask sts to open the book and lok at the things. Tell them these things are often used for first aid. - Ask sts to close the books and go to the board to write the names of the things they have just seen from memory. - Ask ss to open the book and go through the words in English. - Ask ss to work in groups to write down what they would do in these situations which require first aid. - Get feedback & correct * Answer key: 1. emergency room 2. sterile dressing 3. medicated oil 4. ice 5. water pack 6. alcohol *Possible answer: + A girl has a burn on her arm use cold water/ ice to ease the pain + A boy has a bad cut on his legUse alcohol/ medicated oil/ sterile dressing + A girl has a nose bleed Use a handkerchief to stop the bleeding/ tell her not to lie down + A boy has a bee sting Use medicated oil Pre Reading I. Pre teach vocabulary T gives the new words Sts listen ,read and take note * Checking technique: slap the board II. Gap fill Prediction: - T asks sts to predict the words in the gaps. - Sts guess the words -T Calls on some sts to go to the board and write their words. New words: 1. an ambulance ( visual ) 2. Emergency( situation ) (Ask: When do we need an ambulance? – When there is an emergency.) 3. unconcious (adj)>< conscious( antonym ) 4. to bleed -> the bleeding (translation ) “ There was an emergency at Lan’s school. A student (1) off her bike and hit her head on the road. She was (2) but she cut and the (3) was (4) badly. Lan telephoned Bach Mai Hospital and asked the nurse to send an Nguyen phan tue (5) to Quang Trung school Lan was asked to keep the student (6) while waiting for the ambulance.” While reading - Have sts open the book, listen to the tape -Sts listen - Check if sts’ predictions are right or not -Sts read in pairs * Answer key: 1. fell 2. concious 3. cut 4. bleeding 5. ambulance 6. awake - Ask ss to work in groups of 4 to read the dialogue again and select the topics covered in the dialogue -Sts work in groups of four -T tells st s in groups to write their answer on a sheet of paper and hand in after finishing. - Collect sts’paper and correct * Answer key: a-b-c-e-f. Post reading . Role play -T lets sts in turns play the roles to demonstrate the dialogue. Set the scene: - Ask ss some questions to elicit the models - Have ss repeat 2 times before writing them on the board. - Underline the key words * Questions: 1. I want you to get me a bandage. How can I say? 2. I’d like you to come to my party. How can I say? 3. I tell my brother that I’ll surely finish my work before bedtime. How can I say? II. Model sentences Concept checking: - Get ss to work out the rules for themselves by asking questions - After formulating the model sentences, elicit some more phrases with the same use from Ss 1. Will you (please) get me a bandage? 2. Would you like to come to my party? 3. I promise I’ll finish my homework b/f bedtime. 1, To make a request: Will Would Could you (please) + bare infinitive ? Can Responses: + Sure / OK / All right + I’m sorry I can’t./ I’m afraid not. 2, To make an offer: Will/ Won’t you Shall I bare infinitive ? Can I Would you like + to infinitive ? Practice - Hang the chart with the statements on the board. - Ask ss to look at the pictures on P82 and match the situations with the statements. 1. The girl has a burn on her hand. 2. The girl has a bad fewer. 3. The boy has just broken the vase. 4. The boy has a headache. 5. The boy has a snake bite. Answer keys: 1-a 2-d 3-e 4-b 5- c Picture drill - Indentify the situations in the pictures. - Model picture a, then get ss to repeat ( chorus- individual) - Call on one student to desmontrate Picture b, with the teacher.And then OPEN PAIRS. Pic.a, request. Pic.b, offer/ request. Pic.c, offer/ request. Pic.d, offer Pic.e, promise. Pre-listening: 1. Pre Teach Vocabulary - Checking vocabulary: What and Where 1. Anser keys A -> ambulance B -> wheelchair C -> crutches D -> eye chart E -> scale F -> stretcher Order Prediction - Rub out the letter A,B but leave the words. - Tell ss they are going to listen to a paragraph about the activities taking place in an emergency room which contains the words on the bord. - Put the words in the table. - T has ss copy and guess the order of the words. - Play the tape and ask ss to listen - Ask ss to give their answers and correct. Read the instructions for each case. Give network and call Ss to think and finish in groups. 3.While - Reading (10ms) Ask SS to read the instructions and finish net work. Let victim lie down coolthe burn with ice don’t give the victim any food Work in pairs and four students go to the BB and write . Each group takes turn to go to the board and writes as many words as they can. Compare and remark. shock Fainting Correct . Copy the words. Read the situations written. Finish network in groups. Shock Give him /her a cup of tea when he /she revives Don’t overheat the victim with blankets or coats. Don’t give him/her any food or drink or drug. Burn Cool the burn immediately to minimize the tissue damage. Correct and remind the contend of the lesson. Look at the grid . Read the instructions again.
