I Introduction

1 Introduction to the report:

This report includes my six weeks experience at Tay Ninh Department of Foreign Affairs, the knowledge I have obtained, what methods and theories in university that I have adapted and reflection on my ability and flaws

2 Internship organization:

Tay Ninh Department of Foreign Affairs serves as the pivotal administrative body responsible for managing international relations and affairs within the Tay Ninh province of Vietnam Translation and interpretation are crucial to facilitate effective communication with foreign counterparts, ensuring mutual understanding despite language barriers

3 Internship position:

I applied for the position of an intern of Translation and Interpretation and worked in the Office Room

4, Duration:

My internship started from 19" of February to 30" of March, a total of six weeks

5 Structure of the report:

The report consists of four main sections: I Introduction, II Learning goals and objectives, III Product analysis, and IV Conclusion

II Description of internship The day-to-day activities during my internship can be narrated as the table below

- Got introduced to the Department of Foreign Affairs and attended a brief training session

- Took note of vocabulary and phrases commonly found in political news

- Got basic training on translation and interpretation techniques

- Assisted with administrative tasks: document

filing and organizing reference materials

- Assigned simple and short translation tasks

- Reviewed translated documents for errors and

consistency

Week 3: 04/03/2024 —

- Translated a political article: “Gala giao lvu

văn hóa Việt - Ấn "Nơi gặp gỡ đất trời"

- Shadowed interpreters during visits of foreign dignitaries to the Department

- Got given more challenging translation assignments, translated “KHANH THANH COT

CO CAO NHAT DONG DUONG”

Week 5: 18/03/2024 — 24/03/2024

- Participated in multilateral conferences and

workshops, observed and practiced simultaneous

interpretation

- Received feedback from Ms Tam on translation

and interpretation performance

- Conducted self-assessment and set personal development goals

Week 6: 25/03/2024 — 30/03/2024

- Attended a debriefing session with Ms Tam to

discuss the overall internship experience and provide suggestions for improvement

- Completed a final evaluation and received feedback from Ms Tam on the performance during the internship

On a personal level, I encountered challenges in familiarizing myself and building connections with colleagues On the professional front, the difficulties primarily revolved around practical task execution and aspects beyond my expertise Initially, I grappled with complex terminology during task execution, requiring extra time to arrive at accurate translations However, with the support of colleagues and superior guidance, I learned to leverage AI for translating unfamiliar professional terms and gained insights on effectively interpreting speeches from foreign educators

TI Analysis and evaluation

1 Product overview

There were two main activities that I did during my internship, which were translating materials and observing experienced interpreters when conferences and workshops were held

I was assigned for the translation of an article with the title “Gala giao lru van hoa Việt - Án “Nơi gặp gỡ dat trai” and one named “KHANH THANH COT CO CAO NHAT DONG DUONG”, both are from two political magazines

2 Comparison industry standards with the theories in class:

The strategies proposed by Baker and Newmark that I have learned from previous

courses serve as valuable theoretical frameworks However, there are notable differences

between these theoretical approaches and the industry standards observed in real-world professional settings

While the theories emphasize various methods, the industry demands a more dynamic and context-sensitive approach When working on a project, I often find myself navigating complex linguistic, cultural, and pragmatic considerations that cannot always be adequately addressed by adhering strictly to theoretical frameworks

3 Examples or case studies Two noteworthy instances in my translation experience involved articles from a political magazine and a website, both originally written in Vietnamese with a formal tone

The original article contains plenty of special terms used in a particular field like “Noi gặp go dat go dat trai” By employing translation by cultural substitution, I was able to replace most phrases with more common terms in the target language, resulting in “Where heaven and earth meet”

Apart from that, the original article tended to repeatedly use similar words in each paragraph, so to tackle this issue, many paraphrase terms with similar meaning were added as replacement from the original text

Comment: Keeping words simple and formal is better than using complex and confusing

words

I used the omission strategy for terms not clearly translatable from the original context For instance, “Lé long hop” was unclear, so I removed the ambiguous part of the phrase, resulting in “Merger Ceremony.”

Furthermore, I employed paraphrasing to maintain similar meanings despite differences

in grammatical structure For example, “Céng trinh thé hién niém ty hao dan toc trén bén cảng quốc tế với hình ảnh con tàu vươn mình ra biển lớn” was paraphrased as “The construction representing national pride at the international port, featuring a ship sailing into

the vast sea.”

IV Conclusion

The internship provided me with the opportunity to engage with the translation industry and allowed me to actively prepare for my future career Through interactions with translation tasks and interpretors, I gained valuable knowledge which I believe will greatly contribute to

my employment prospects The theoretical foundation from my classes played a crucial role

in facilitating my ability to render the source text effectively

Moreover, the internship served as a platform for self-reflection, highlighting areas where I need to improve, particularly in communication, interpersonal skills, and refining my listening and note-taking abilities Recognizing these weaknesses has motivated me to seek further development
