LITERATURE REVIEW
Trang 112.1 Overview of Chat GPT
2.1.1 Definition of Chat GPT
According to Haleem, Javaid, and Singh (2022), ChatGPT is a generative pre-trained
transformer that is currently garnering a lot of attention The term "Generative," or "G," in
the acronym GPT refers to the tool's text-producing ability Pre-training, or "P," is the
process of using a model from one machine learning job to train another, in a manner
similar to how people use their past knowledge to pick up new skills There is a lot of text
available on ChatGPT for pre-training The "Transformer" neural network (represented by
the letter 𝑇) looks at the overall relationship between each component of the data series It
is a free chatbot that can answer almost any query It was developed by OpenAI and
released for public testing As of right now, it's the best AI chatbot ever Computer code,
college-level essays, poetry, and even somewhat acceptable jokes have all been produced
by the chatbot Furthermore, Chat GPT is a formidable tool that Velibor (2023) notes has
the ability to revolutionize how we engage with technology by facilitating more intuitive
and natural conversation between people and machines It is now being investigated for
use in education as a means of improving student learning and engagement Examples of
its current uses include virtual assistants, language translation software, and chatbots for
customer service Moreover, Deng and Lin (2022) state that ChatGPT is a large language
model (LLM) that can generate appropriate responses to context and carry on
natural-sounding conversations
Trang 122.1.2 Origin of Chat GPT
Calvin (2023) said that Wojciech Zaremba, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, and John
Schulman co-founded OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT Subsequently, Sam
Altman became the CEO For almost ten years, OpenAI has been developing the GPT
(Generative Pre-trained Transformer) family of big language models Just a few months
after ChatGPT made its debut, the most recent model, GPT-4, was introduced
Furthermore, Iryna Tetyana (2023) assumes that the service was introduced in November
2022; yet, its fundamental algorithm, GPT-3, was developed in 2020 As of this writing,
the most recent version is GPT-4, which was made available in March 2023
2.1.3 Features of Chat GPT
In the analysis of Haleem, Javaid, and Singh (2022) ChatGPT includes features like
remembering aspects, supportive communication, follow-up corrections, etc Besides these
diverse features and capacities, a number of drawbacks have been noted, including the
potential for biased content to appear and occasionally inaccurate information to be
generated Moreover, a number of other advantages and uses for chatGPT are further
illustrated and explained It can carry out simple tasks and generate documents that seem
like human speech in casual settings The goal of ChatGPT is to develop a cooperative AI
system that can generate informative, interesting, and contextually appropriate discourse
In addition, Yu (2023) demonstrates that the primary characteristic of Chat GPT and other
like products is the existence of defined guidelines for content creation These products are
deeply ingrained in people's daily lives and have the capacity to form tight personal
connections with each user, which has a dramatic impact on people's behavior patterns and
encourages ongoing innovation in learning processes
2.1.4 Roles of Chat GPT in education in the modern era
Trang 13Velibor (2023) claims that Chat GPT may be used to build chatbots and online tutoring
systems that assist students in honing their language skills These chatbots may mimic
in-person interactions and give students immediate feedback on their vocabulary, grammar,
and voice Additionally, by evaluating a student's writing style, making suggestions for
enhancements, and offering feedback on grammar, punctuation, and spelling mistakes, the
GPT can be used to assist students in developing their writing abilities Additionally, essays
and other written assignments can be automatically graded by GPT, which can save
teachers a ton of time and provide students with quick feedback on their work Moreover,
students can have individualized learning experiences made possible by GPT GPT can
provide individualized recommendations for learning materials, including articles, videos,
and textbooks, based on an analysis of a student's learning styles and interests In a similar
vein, Iryna Tetyana (2023) claims that ChatGPT offers students on-demand support and
direction on a variety of subjects Due to its round-the-clock accessibility, students may
get help whenever they need it, which lessens their reliance on more conventional resources
like in-person instructors and textbooks It might offer other viewpoints and resources than
those found in textbooks or conventional educational environments Students can
participate in individualized learning experiences catered to their unique needs and
interests by interacting with ChatGPT Based on the learning styles of the students,
ChatGPT can modify its responses and resources to help them understand subjects more
fully
Trang 142.2 English Translation Proficiency
2.2.1 Definitions of translation
There are many definitions of translation Catford ideas are best expressed in his work A
Linguistic Theory of Translation In the beginning of the book, he proposes: “Translation
is an operation performed on languages: a process of substituting a text in one language for
a text in another Clearly, then, any theory of translation must draw upon a theory of
language - a general linguistic theory.” (Catford, 1965, p.1) Besides Nida’s views of
translation are mainly embodied in Toward a Science of Translating and The Theory and
Practice of Translation, in the former work, he regards translation as a scientific subject
and points out that “the transference of a message from one language to another is a valid
subject for scientific description” (Nida, 1964, p.3) In addition, Newmark.P (1988) also
wrote that most translation means transferring content from one language to another while
remaining true to the author's intention
2.2.2 Positive impact of ChatGPT on translation learning of students majoring in
English Language
Xiao & Zhi (2023 ) point out GPT chat can enhance students' learning ability by providing
students with necessary information knowledge Additionally, according to Bonner, Lege,
& Frazier (2023) ChatGPT can provide useful answers to students giving them the ability
to dig deeper into their knowledge and improve their understanding In this sense, as
asserted by First(2023) GPT chat promotes student autonomy in learning When accessing
GPT chat, students can freely ask what they want without interference, enhancing students'
sense of self-acquiring knowledge Similarly, Chinonso, Theresa, & Aduke (2023) show
that GPT Chat helps students’ study and research more effectively because it quickly
responds to questions asked and fosters an attractive and adaptive learning environment
This view is supported by Grassini (2023) who writes that Chat GPT is an AI based tool
that follows the advancement of technology Therefore, it cultivates an interesting and
flexible learning atmosphere Baskara & Mukarto(2023) say that Chat GPT enhances
students’ reading comprehension Chat GPT exposes students to authentic texts It provides
potential materials to improve students’ reading comprehension It promotes the
enhancement of students’ vocabulary and grammar mastery Chat GPT is designed to have
Trang 15the ability to provide feedback by using human-like language The language covers
correct sentences and sophisticated vocabulary Hence, it helps the students to elevate
their vocabulary and grammar mastery level (Athanassopouls, et., al., 2023) There
are people who agree with them Rueda (2023) chat GPT improves students’ learning
experience and academic achievement One of attractive aspects of Chat GPT is enriching
students’ learning experience and facilitating the improvement of academic achievement
2.2.3 Nagative impact of chatGPT on translation learning of students majoring in
English Language
Although has many positive effects, Chat GPT still carries negative effects According to
Zhu,I.,C.,et., al (2023) GPT chats can provide incorrect information because their data
only stops at a specific time period, so it is difficult to avoid errors Furthermore, it may
diminish students' creativity as ChatGPT offers instantaneous feedback, which discourages
them from utilizing their full creative potential (Shidiq, 2023) Walter, Cox, & Heyman
(2023) point out that ChatGPT evidently poses challenges to academic integrity, as students
may tend to depend on ChatGPT answers to complete their homework instead of utilizing
it solely as a reference Moreover, it potentially leads to plagiarism The inclination to seek
instant solutions without exerting significant effort may expose students to plagiarism
issues, as it is tempting to copy and paste answers and then paraphrase them (Eke, 2023)
2.3 Impact of integrating Chat GPT into the learning curriculum on the
enhancement of English translation skills
2.3.1 Positive effects
2.3.1.1 Language Learning
Cribben & Zeinali (2023) maintains that ChatGPT holds promise for the development of
chatbots and virtual language tutors aimed at enhancing students' language proficiency
These applications are capable of emulating authentic conversational interactions and
furnishing instantaneous feedback on aspects such as grammar, pronunciation, and lexicon
Similarly, Oranga (2023) suggests that Chat GPT can assist in language learning by
providing grammar corrections, suggesting synonyms, explaining idiomatic
expressions, and engaging in conversations to improve language skills Likewide,
Trang 16Dilmegani (2024) hold the view that ChatGPT can be a valuable tool for language learning,
improve their language skills Extant research corroborates the efficacy of integrating AI
technologies, including ChatGPT, in language education, with demonstrable benefits on
student motivation, engagement, and academic outcomes (Ouyang et al., 2022; Liang et
al., 2021; Roll & Wylie, 2016) Such AI-driven interventions offer personalized and
adaptive learning modalities, affording learners the convenience of honing language
proficiencies whilst receiving timely and tailored feedback (Kuleto et al., 2021)
2.3.1.2 Instant Feedback
Oanga (2023) point out that the role of ChatGPT in furnishing expeditious feedback on
assignments, quizzes, and inquiries, thereby facilitating learners' comprehension of errors
and expeditious rectification Moreover, ChatGPT serves as a salient instrument for
language acquisition, furnishing translations, grammatical elucidations, lexical drills, and
conversational simulations, thereby fostering students' linguistic proficiency Dilmegani
(2024) have a point is similar to Mr Oanga in respect of, extols the efficacy of artificial
intelligence tools such as ChatGPT in expeditiously processing and generating
information, thereby engendering temporal savings and augmenting efficacy for educators
and learners alike This engenders a salutary milieu wherein students can divert attention
to ancillary tasks, courtesy of the automated provision of immediate feedback and facile
access to information facilitated by ChatGPT
2.3.2 Negative effects
2.3.2.1 Overreliance on Technology
According to Cribben & Zeinali (2023) caution against the potential risk of students overly
depending on ChatGPT and similar AI tools, which could detrimentally impact their critical
thinking abilities and autonomy in learning Overreliance on ChatGPT may result in a
dependency that obstructs the development of independent translation skills, as users may
grow accustomed to relying solely on AI for translation tasks without fully comprehending
the linguistic intricacies involved Furthermore, Oranga (2023) highlights the negative
consequences of excessive AI usage, such as ChatGPT, on human interaction and critical
thinking skills Overdependence on technology for problem-solving may lead to a decline
Trang 17in human interaction and a diminishing capacity for critical analysis This overreliance on
AI tools like ChatGPT can potentially hinder students' ability to engage in meaningful
interactions and to think critically when faced with complex challenges
2.3.2.2 Limited Context Awareness
Oranga (2023) argues that ChatGPT may occasionally produce responses that lack
contextual appropriateness or coherence due to its limited understanding of the broader
conversation context it is evident that ChatGPT's shortcomings in understanding context
and producing coherent responses can pose significant challenges in translation
tasks.Similarly, Cribben and Zeinali (2023) emphasize that GPT models generate text
based on learned patterns and associations from training data, lacking genuine
comprehension of text context or meaning It is a well-known fact that, translation requires
not only linguistic proficiency but also a deep understanding of the cultural and contextual
nuances inherent in language use When ChatGPT fails to grasp these subtleties, it may
produce translations that are inaccurate, nonsensical, or culturally inappropriate Moreover,
Biswas and Som (2023) observe that ChatGPT encounters difficulties in grasping context,
resulting in misinterpretations and inaccurate responses during social media interactions
On balance, these studies collectively underscore the challenge posed by ChatGPT's
inability to fully comprehend nuanced contextual cues, leading to occasional inaccuracies
and nonsensical responses in text generation tasks
