In today's globalized economy, English has emerged as a vital common language that unites nations, making it essential for individuals to learn and master it Among the four key language skills—reading, writing, listening, and speaking—listening and speaking are receiving the most focus However, many students face challenges in accessing real English practice due to geographical distances and limited teaching environments As a result, learning English through movies has become a popular, convenient, and effective method, offering students at Hanoi University of Business and Technology (HUBT) a valuable opportunity to enhance their listening and speaking abilities in a real-time context.

In today's digital age, devices like phones, laptops, and tablets are essential for students at HUBT, facilitating easy access to information and entertainment These tools are particularly valuable for enhancing listening and speaking skills, which are crucial for building vocabulary, grammar, and cultural understanding, ultimately leading to improved writing and reading abilities The frequency of viewing and the choice of genres significantly influence these outcomes Consequently, many students recognize that watching movies serves not just as entertainment but also as a beneficial method for advancing their English language skills Acknowledging this importance, the researcher initiated a study titled “A study on the effects of movie viewing on learning English to develop listening and speaking skills of students at Hanoi University of Business and Technology.”

Aims and objectives of the study

This study explores the benefits that HUBT students gain from watching English movies to enhance their listening and speaking skills Additionally, the paper offers recommendations to improve the effectiveness of their learning process.

Research questions

This study aims to answer the following questions:

1 What are the benefits students get when learning English through movie viewing to improve their listening and speaking skills?

2 What are some useful solutions that help them improve their English listening and speaking skills?

The scope of the study

This study, conducted with a sample of 100 students from K23 and K24 at HUBT, explores the benefits of learning English through movie viewing, specifically focusing on enhancing listening and speaking skills Due to time and resource constraints, the research is limited to survey questionnaires aimed at identifying effective strategies for improving these essential language skills.

Design of the study

The study consists of three main parts:

Part 1: Introduces the aim and objectives of the study, and the methodology used to conduct this paper.

Chapter 2: Methodology Chapter 3: Findings and discussion

Part 3: Conclusion – discusses the conclusion and limitations of the study as well as suggests some directions for further study.

LITERATURE REVIEW

To have a full understanding of the concept of the movie, listening, and speaking, this section would provide several relevant definitions of them in previous studies.

Severny and Andrei (2013) describe a movie as an artistic medium composed of moving images that express ideas, stories, emotions, and beauty intended for the audience These visuals are typically paired with sound to enhance viewer engagement Zhuang (2006) simplifies the concept by defining a movie as a sequence of moving pictures accompanied by sound that narrates a story, which can be experienced in theaters, on television, or through other devices.

Listening, as defined by Bentley (1996), is the active process of receiving and interpreting information from spoken or nonverbal messages It involves not just hearing collective sounds, but breaking them down into individual components such as letters, stress, and rhythm to extract meaningful information (Richard Nordquist, 2019).

Speaking is the human voice communication through the use of language.

In other words, Speaking is to say words orally, to communicate as by talking, making a request, and making a speech (Nunan, 1995) According to Chaney

Speaking is the process of producing language through speech or body language to share information with listeners in various contexts According to Brown (1994) and Burns and Joyce (1997), speaking involves a sequence of actions for communication and information exchange, which can be broken down into three fundamental steps: creating, getting, and handling data Ultimately, speaking can be understood as the systematic combination of sounds to form meaningful sentences.

Action films are a dynamic genre of cinema featuring heroic characters facing a series of challenges that include physical feats and intense action sequences These movies often showcase protagonists who bravely confront life-threatening situations and formidable villains, ultimately leading to their triumph.

Comedy is a film genre centered around humor, designed to evoke laughter through exaggerated traits and situations Typically, these movies conclude with a happy ending, although black comedies may present a darker twist.

Dramas are compelling, plot-driven narratives that showcase realistic characters and settings, emphasizing intense character development and interaction Unlike other genres, they typically do not rely on special effects, comedy, or action As one of the largest film genres, dramas encompass a wide range of subgenres, each offering unique storytelling experiences.

Romance films are a genre centered on the love story between two main characters, often delving into themes such as love at first sight, forbidden love, love triangles, and sacrificial love The tone of these movies can range from joyful to tragic, but they consistently aim to evoke strong emotions in the audience.

The horror film genre elicits intense negative emotions and taps into primal fears through its unsettling plots and eerie visuals Characterized by dim lighting, disturbing sounds, and graphic death scenes, traditional horror often features the intrusion of malevolent forces or supernatural entities into everyday life, creating a chilling atmosphere that captivates and terrifies viewers.

1.2.3 The importance of using movie in learning the English language

Learning English as a second language poses significant challenges, particularly in mastering listening and speaking skills However, utilizing movies as a learning tool has gained popularity due to its effectiveness and convenience This engaging method plays a crucial role in enhancing the English learning experience, making it both enjoyable and more effective for students.

Kusumarasdyati (2004) explored the impact of movies in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classes, highlighting their effectiveness in motivating learners and enhancing their imagination Supporting this, Herron and Hanley (1992) found that incorporating movies in teaching not only reinforces students' existing knowledge but also promotes the comprehensive development of all four language skills.

Movies serve as an effective tool for language learning, motivating students and enhancing their understanding through paralinguistic features such as gestures, pauses, and character reactions (Florence, 2009; Keene, 2006) They offer contextual information that fosters interactional skills, surpassing traditional audio resources like cassettes and CDs By exposing students to various aspects of language, literature, and drama, movies promote critical thinking and enhance overall language proficiency.

1.2.4 The effects of movie viewing on learning the listening and speaking skills.

Motivation plays a crucial role in enhancing learners' ability to absorb knowledge effectively Watching movies in English has become an essential method for students, fostering their interest in the language As learners engage with English through films, they experience significant improvements in their language skills, particularly in listening and speaking.

Varga (2013) posed the research question, “Which skills can be developed with the help of feature movies?” and found that a single movie can enhance all four language skills: listening, reading, speaking, and writing The use of films in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms positively impacts learners' receptive and productive abilities Similarly, Chen (2015) investigated the effects of English movies on listening and speaking skills, emphasizing that while there are no shortcuts to language learning, listening and speaking are crucial His findings indicate that language used in films reflects real-life communication, and watching English movies helps students expand their vocabulary and improve their language sensitivity by repeatedly engaging with the dialogue.

Not everyone has the chance to visit English-speaking countries such as the US, UK, and Canada to immerse themselves in the culture and practice speaking with native speakers Therefore, learning English through movies emerges as an effective solution This method provides exposure to authentic English in context, encompassing intonation, tone, accent, vocabulary, and pronunciation (Sherman, 2003).

From the points above, movie viewing brings many benefits for students especially in real-life communication and helps them listen as well as speak better, more fluently, and naturally.

METHODOLOGY

Research questions

This study investigates the significant impact of movies on students' perceptions, opinions, and attitudes toward learning the English language The findings aim to offer valuable insights for the Faculty of English Language Studies at HUBT, focusing on how cinematic experiences can enhance language acquisition Key questions addressed in this research will shed light on the effectiveness of using films as a learning tool in English education.

2 What are some useful solutions that help them improve their English listening and speaking skills?

Methods

The researcher conducted a comprehensive study by gathering materials from various web pages, analyzing and summarizing the information To assess the opinions and perceptions of EFL learners, a survey questionnaire was distributed to 100 students from K23 and K24 at HUBT The questionnaire included a mix of open-ended and closed-ended questions, as well as rating scales.

Research setting

A survey was conducted to gather insights on the impact of movie viewing on English learning among students from K23 and K24 at HUBT The research involved both internet data collection and interviews, utilizing questionnaires to collect data from a sample of 100 students.

Data collection instruments

3.1.3 Selecting movie genres to watch

Movies come in various genres, including comedy, romance, action, horror, and science fiction, each influencing language learning differently According to survey results, 60% of participants prefer comedy films, while 23% favor romance, and 17% choose other genres Comedy is particularly popular among students for its entertaining content and relevance to everyday English conversations, making it an enjoyable way to learn and relieve stress In contrast, 23% of students prefer romance films for their engaging plots and gentle pacing, which aids in understanding and memorizing common sentence structures.

Seventeen percent of viewers prefer horror, action, or documentary films, but these genres may not significantly enhance English language skills The vocabulary used in such movies is often challenging to comprehend and retain, and it is rarely applicable in everyday conversations.

Subtitles in movies can significantly enhance English language learning by providing clarity in intonation and expression They serve as a valuable tool for learners, helping them to better understand linguistic elements and improve their overall English proficiency.

The chart indicates that most respondents recognize the benefits of watching English movies for enhancing their language skills Motivation plays a crucial role in successful second-language acquisition, and incorporating films into language learning aligns with students' interests, making the process more enjoyable However, 10% of respondents remain unaware of these advantages, suggesting they may not engage sufficiently with this method, resulting in a lack of motivation to improve their English studies.

Using English subtitles while watching movies significantly aids vocabulary acquisition, though students feel less confident in mastering idioms, proverbs, and slang While grammar and pronunciation are typically emphasized in language learning, idiomatic expressions require a more natural learning approach that extends beyond traditional classroom settings Students recognize that movies enhance their understanding of conversations, as this audio-visual medium engages multiple senses, allowing for better contextual comprehension With increased motivation to watch English films, learners can effectively improve their listening skills, demonstrating that frequent exposure to movies is a superior method for language development compared to conventional techniques.

3.1.7 The effects of watching movies on learning the Speaking skill

According to the survey results presented in Table 3.7, 70% of respondents utilize movies to enhance their pronunciation skills, although 65% remain uncertain about their ability to incorporate idioms, proverbs, and slang into their speaking Additionally, 60% of participants believe they effectively practice new vocabulary through films, while 52 respondents feel that movies inspire them to engage in better daily conversations Over two-thirds agree that watching English films significantly improves their speaking skills, highlighting the positive impact of movies on language development As students at HUBT, fluency in English is crucial, and their responses indicate a strong belief in the role of films in fostering pronunciation and conversational practice While learners moderately acknowledge the challenge of using idioms and slang, they recognize that movies provide valuable listening experiences that can enhance their understanding and usage of these expressions in context The diverse genres of films allow students to explore various conversational settings, further motivating them to integrate what they learn into their everyday English speaking.

From the comparison of percentages of the findings above, it can be concluded that watching English movies have more direct influence to listening skill compared to speaking skill.

Discussion

3.2.1 Watching movies is a great way to learn the English language, especially listening and speaking skills

Many people, especially students, enjoy watching movies as a way to relax and unwind after a long day For language learners, particularly those studying English, movies offer an excellent opportunity to enhance listening and speaking skills while making the learning process enjoyable This method not only boosts motivation but also yields impressive results in language acquisition.

Watching movies in English offers an engaging alternative for those learning the language, breaking the monotony of traditional classroom methods and textbook exercises This enjoyable approach allows learners to immerse themselves in natural conversations, enhancing their understanding and fluency By incorporating films into their study routine, students can rejuvenate their motivation and energy, making the learning process both relaxing and effective Ultimately, watching movies becomes a fun and valuable tool for mastering English speaking skills.

Watching movies in English is an effective way to enhance your vocabulary by introducing you to new words, slang, idioms, and colloquial expressions that are often not covered in traditional course books By hearing these terms used in context, you can better understand their meanings and apply them correctly in your conversations.

Many students struggle to adapt to new English learning methods due to reliance on outdated habits When introduced to innovative approaches, such as learning through movies, they often feel confused and fail to maximize the benefits Therefore, being proactive and persistent are crucial for successfully embracing these new techniques.

3.2.3 Some recommendations for learning English listening and speaking skills through movies

To enhance English language learning, students should actively learn vocabulary by taking notes while watching movies and practicing these words in context for better retention It's essential to remember that not understanding every word is okay; grasping the overall meaning is what matters Beginners should opt for short films (15-30 minutes) with clear dialogue, while advanced learners can challenge themselves with more complex films Choosing movies related to daily life, such as comedies or cartoons, is most effective for learning Platforms like Netflix and FPT offer a vast array of quality films with good subtitles, while YouTube can be a viable option if you select reputable channels Recommended films include "Friends," Pixar movies, and "Ice Age," which are entertaining and relatable Watching movies multiple times, both with and without subtitles, is crucial for improving listening and speaking skills.

Summary of the chapter

To enhance students' learning processes, several solutions are proposed Firstly, students should actively note new vocabulary and phrases, practicing them in context for better retention It is important for learners to avoid focusing solely on individual words and instead understand their meanings within the context of the entire video For those with lower English proficiency, selecting short films with clear dialogues is advisable Researchers recommend watching genres like comedy, romance, or cartoons on platforms such as Netflix, YouTube, or FPT Additionally, students should view each movie at least twice with subtitles to fully grasp proverbs, intonation, and slang.

English has emerged as the global language of communication, making it essential for students to master its skills The researcher encourages HUBT students to dedicate more time to learning English through movie viewing, as this method can enhance their listening and speaking abilities, ultimately leading to better academic outcomes.

Limitation of the study

Despite the researcher's significant efforts, the study faces unavoidable limitations due to time constraints, resource restrictions, and the researcher's limited experience Initially, there was a plan to combine questionnaires with interviews or observations for more diverse and convincing findings; however, time limitations and difficulties in scheduling with participants resulted in the use of questionnaires alone Additionally, the restricted timeframe meant that the study could not encompass all aspects of the field, focusing instead on the most typical elements Furthermore, the research is limited to examining the impact of watching movies on the English learning process of students at HUBT The researcher encourages future studies in this area to address these limitations for greater completeness and appreciation, and welcomes constructive feedback on this study.

Suggestion for further study

Future research should explore the relationship between students' attitudes and their communication skills in the context of movie watching To improve communication effectiveness, it is essential to focus on factors that boost students' learning, confidence, and communication abilities Incorporating surveys or interviews can enhance the depth of the research Additionally, expanding the study to include students from other universities in Hanoi, such as the National Economics University, Hanoi Open University, and Thang Long University, would provide a broader perspective.
