must first have experience or at least have learned about the required expertise Picking the right university and the right major can arm a person with great knowledge which assists them to go higher up in their career hierarchy However, choosing a major without having carefully considered can bring bad consequences After finishing high school, students around the world would normally know which university they're going to apply to and what major they would choose already Even if not, they will take a gap year to have more time to discover all different kinds of jobs and, most importantly, to understand more about themself and see what they would major in afterward Unfortunately, that was not the case for most Vietnamese students Many of them are not sure in terms of what to after high school, which leads to picking a university or major without actually knowing what exactly they're going to learn Students of International Bachelor Degree, National University of Economics in Vietnam are no exception Therefore, this research is made to dig deeper into this issue 2 Rationale: Picking the wrong major has always been a problem among students It could cause by their family’s expectations, lack of career guidance, or self-understanding, … Therefore, we carried out this research to look further and find out what could be done to reduce the bad consequences it brings As a the Career Counselling Organization which will use the data and results from this research as a first step Research questions For us to find the answer to the problems and purposes of our research, we will be needing research questions What is the level of certainty of International Bachelor Degree, National Economic University students on the major which they are currently pursuing? What are the reasons leading to students of International Bachelor Degree, National Economic University pursuing an unsuitable major? What are the consequences of pursuing an unsuitable major? What are possible solutions for students finding the right major for them Scope of the research Many young people nowadays not have a partner to support their vision and spirit, and it appears that they have lost their direction and aspirations while beginning to pick a major, making four years of university uninteresting since the major is not suitable for them Given this situation, this confined to university students at National Economic University, specifically International Bachelor Degree students and National Economic University students, wherein the opinions of students were studied in interview sessions The present carries out during a 10-week Research method To execute this research, we think the ideal way would be to carry out the quantitative method Quantitative research is defined as a systematic investigation of phenomena by gathering quantifiable data and performing statistical, mathematical, or computational techniques A survey will be conducted to collect information about majors from students in grades intake 14 to intake 17; with this survey, we will learn the proportion of students who choose the wrong major Not only that, with this information at hand, we will be able to conclude the main reasons leading to students pursuing the unsuitable major and find solutions for said problem Structure of the research The research will be divided into different parts To start off, the first part will be an introduction that introduces the research The second part will be a literature review to present the definitions as well as analyze and evaluate the sources The third part is research methodology with the purpose of presenting how we will the research The fourth part will be finding and discussions where we will describe the data we found and have a discussion about it The final part is a conclusion to conclude our research CHAPTER II: LITERATURE REVIEW Overview Choosing a major is one of the most important decisions a student will make in life However, it has become a problem amongst them As society progresses, students are having a more difficult time deciding on what major to pursue Because of this, many researchers have stood up to identify what is causing students so many problems Body 2a Factors leading to students deciding on what major to pursue There are a lot of factors influencing a student in major choice Many come to mind such as personal interest, the quality of the college and even the cost or how far the college is away from them However, research by Rico-Briones and Bueno (2019) concluded that it is actually the surrounding people of the student that influences them the most in the choice of a major It is crucial that we understand a student might change the major to pursue There are both positive and negative factors that may Document continues below Discover more from: P_LV4 Project Đại học Kinh tế… 265 documents Go to course W05B - 123123 18 Project 100% (5) ĐỀ CƯƠNG ÔN TẬP PHÁP Project influence a student pursuing another major Luckily, it is concluded that positive factors are what affect the students the most when they decide to change a major (Malgwi, Howe and Burnaby, 2005) 2b The consequences of pursuing an unsuitable major Pursuing an unsuitable major could have a detrimental effect on students One of them is that they run the risk of having a career that isn’t related to their major In Vietnam, there are up to 50% of graduates are working a job unrelated to their major (Ha Anh, 2020) Not only does it affect students in terms of money, proficiency, and time, but it also has a tremendous effect on society It can also lead to students not being able to graduate on time, dropping out of college and various mental effects Significance of research While most research has a general view of the decision of a student when choosing a major, a lot of them haven’t been able to identify what problems pursuing an unsuitable major could have on a student's life Our research also focuses on the students of Vietnam, a developing country which have a bigger problem due to how a lot of the majors aren’t developed enough CHAPTER III: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY Research participants Our project will focus on the insight of the International Bachelor’s Degree, National Economic University students Through observation, the lack of motivation in some students can easily be seen Some of them tend to skip class on a daily basis or their assignment extremely poorly This problem might be caused by the feeling of being unsuited to the learning program Not only freshmen but even some seniors can feel the same We will be able to see the reasons behind every student ranging from intake 14 to intake 17 decisions on deciding their majors Research instrument We have decided that the most suitable instrument is quantitative research We've developed a questionnaire that has questions that will help us identify reasons leading to students pursuing an unsuitable major This will also help us have a broad perspective Considering this, we used Google’s Form as it covered all our needs Research procedure We carried out the research in two weeks In those two weeks, we made the survey and handed out through online groups of International 83% (6) Bachelor Degree We also double checked the answers to make sure there are no duplicates CHAPTER IV: FINDINGS AND DISCUSSIONS Findings IBD students' major (percentage) 15.00% 5.00% 20.00% 10.00% 50.00% BABM BAEM BA-IBM BABF BA B&M Chart 1: Major that International Bachelor Degree students are currently pursuing Reasons (percentage) Chart 2: Reasons leading to International Bachelor Degree students pursuing their major According to the survey, 85% of the students chose which major to pursue based on their own personal interest Although less than half of them are influenced by their parents, it’s still a factor that could potentially affect their choice This is also the case with people around them such as friends and the general trend in which major people are aiming for the most However, Business Management and International Business Management has a significantly higher rate of parents influencing the students Surprisingly, accessibility does not seem to be a factor contributing to a student’s choice of major as none of the participants list it as a reason for choosing a major and a university Bachelor Degree students’ satisfaction with their major Although choosing on which major to pursue is the student’s choice, more than a quarter of them are not satisfied when choosing to study their current major Not only that, but most of them are also following their parents’ wish Twenty-five percent of the students are neutral on the topic of satisfaction when choosing to study their major, most of which are influenced by people around them such as trends, parents, and peers Only fifty percent of the participants feels satisfied when choosing to study their major As the survey shows, it is also a problem when students are studying their major and possible career choices relating to their major where most of them are not satisfied Students' answers when asked about dropping out 5.29% 31.57% 63.14% Yes No Uncertain Chart 4: International Bachelor Degree students’ answers when asked about dropping out of their current major When the students are asked whether they want to drop their current major, more than half of the participants are uncertain More than thirty-one percent prefer to stick with their major, most of which are out of their personal interest for their major However, some of them decided stay out of the need for a degree or fear of what to next Only five percent of the participants ever thought of dropping their major because they felt not wanting to continue to pursue their major or felt like they are wasting time Students' thought on pursuing another major 40.00% 45.00% 15.00% Yes No Uncertain Chart 5: International Bachelor Degree Students' thought on pursuing another major We asked the participants if they have ever thought of pursuing another major Forty-five percent of them are uncertain if they should pursue another major or not However, there is a high forty percent of the participants thought about pursuing a new major Although most of them are out of personal interest, a small portion of them thinks that other major could lead to better career opportunity Fifteen percent of the students asked said that they have not ever thought about pursuing another major out of the lack of interest in them Discussions As the research shows, most International Bachelor Degree students chose their major based on their personal interest However not all of them are satisfied with their decision when studying said major Another significant factor on their decisions, which is their parents’ wish, also lead to unsatisfaction both when choosing and studying Not only that, considering previously mentioned consequences of pursuing an unsuitable major, this could have a devastating effect not only on the student but also the society as a whole Some possible solutions could be career guidance for students or to educate students on particular major when they are in doubt CHAPTER V: CONCLUSION Summary of the research A study of International Bachelor Degree students pursuing their current majors for a variety of reasons This study shows the certainty of International Bachelor Degree students about the major they pursue and the reasons for choosing that major More than that, are the consequences of pursuing the wrong major and ultimately offering potential solutions According to the observation question, students pursue their major for a variety of reasons, most obviously their own interests and, to a lesser extent, their parents' preferences Following up on survey responses, students' level of happiness with their present major is mainly neutral, they are frequently doubtful of their choice, and they are unsure if they have picked the correct major for them Furthermore, following the incorrect major has disadvantages such as squandering students' time and money, poor work performance One way to limit mistakes while picking industry is to assess your strengths and shortcomings Limits of the research We had a lot of hardships when doing this research For starter, we only had 12 weeks to carry out this research This meant that we couldn't the best job as most of our process was rushed Another limitation was we were only able to a quantitative research and were not able to a qualitative research This meant that we couldn't go in depth into students thoughts and choices Recommendations for further research This research focuses mainly on International Bachelor Degree students For that reason, research on Vietnamese students in general could be helpful in identifying the consequences and factors affecting students pursuing an unsuitable major Research on students who are studying abroad can also help us grasp on said matter REFERENCES Ha Anh, 2020 Vì khoảng 50% sinh viên làm việc trái ngành đào tạo?
