In the satirical essay titled “Advice to Youth,” Mark Twain offers a humorous take on the nature of youth and offers his thoughts on the advice that should be given to younger generations While the essay employs a satirical tone, it does contain some useful insights and suggestions that remain relevant today Twain’s first piece of advice to young people is to always listen to their elders He notes that those who are older and more experienced have a great deal of wisdom to offer, and that young people should take heed of this advice However, he also offers a caveat - that young people should not simply blindly accept the advice given to them, but should use their own judgment and reasoning abilities to evaluate what they hear Another piece of advice that Twain offers is that young people should be themselves He points out that many people try to be something they are not in order to fit in or be popular, but that this is ultimately self-defeating Instead, he recommends that young people focus on being authentic and true to themselves, and that this will ultimately lead to greater happiness and fulfillment in life In addition to these two pieces of advice, Twain also suggests that young people should cultivate a love of learning, always strive for excellence, and embrace failure as an inevitable part of life He also stresses the importance of cultivating a sense of humor, and not taking oneself too seriously While many of the ideas presented in “Advice to Youth” are presented in a humorous or satirical fashion, they nonetheless contain valuable insights and suggestions for young people today By listening to their elders, being themselves, embracing learning and excellence, and maintaining a sense of humor, young people can cultivate the skills and attitudes needed to succeed in life Perhaps Twain’s greatest piece of advice, though, is that young people should always be willing to question the advice they receive and to think for themselves – a skill that will serve them well throughout their lives
