The rationale of the doctoral thesis topic Students are a particular social class They are physically mature, shaping their personality, learning to acquire knowledge and skills of a most oriented career field This is an important human resource to complement the future team of each country In a letter to students on the occasion of the first school day of independent Vietnam - 1945, Ho Chi Minh wrote that “Whether our Vietnam becomes beautiful or not, whether the Vietnamese nation can step up to the stage of glory to have an equal role with the great powers in the world, your study largely contributes to this” That line of letters is not only a word of encouragement but also a belief of President Ho Chi Minh as well as of the entire nation in the young generation in general and students in particular Inheriting and creatively developing President Ho Chi Minh’s thought on youth and youth work, the 7th Conference of the 10th Central Committee affirmed: “Youth is the mainstay of the country, the future owner of the country, a shock force in the construction and defense of the Fatherland, one of the decisive factors for the success or failure of the cause of industrialization and modernization of the country, international integration and building socialism Youth is placed at the center of the strategy of compensating and promoting human factors and resources Taking care of and developing young people is both a goal and a driving force for the stability and sustainable development of the country Therefore, our Party and State always uphold and attach importance to the work of education for the youth In addition to educating scientific knowledge, one of the important tasks today is to take care of educating them in political awareness and moral qualities This is reflected in the Political Report at the 13th Party Congress: “Strengthening the education of the young generation on revolutionary ideals, morality, cultural revolution, upholding patriotism and national pride, nurturing dreams, ambitions, aspiration to rise; upholding the sense of responsibility to fight for the country and society” In fact, political awareness education for Vietnamese students in general and students in Hai Duong province, in particular, has achieved many great achievements The vast majority of students have the will to rise up, have political qualities, a healthy lifestyle, and know how to reach the values of truth, goodness, and beauty; live with ideals, and have faith in the bright future of the nation There have been many noble and beautiful mirrors who sacrificed themselves for the people’s happiness, always admired and followed by young people However, a part of the students in Hai Duong province still has limited political awareness This is shown in they have an indifferent, unconcern attitude to economic and political events; are vague about the enemy's conspiracies and tricks; are lack political courage; have not yet identified the socialist ideal; and are far from good moral values of the nation There are many reasons leading to the above situation, in which the political awareness education for students of universities and colleges in Hai Duong province has not been paid due attention; the educational content is not practical; The form of education is not rich; educational methods are not attractive to students Therefore, the research to find out solutions to improve the effectiveness of political awareness education for students in Hai Duong province now is an urgent issue For the above reasons, the author implements the topic titled “The education of political awareness for students in Hai Duong province today” as a doctoral thesis in the major of dialectic materialism and historical materialism The doctoral thesis’s research purposes and tasks 2.1 The research purposes: On the basis of clarifying some theoretical issues about political awareness education for Vietnamese students, and at the same time clarifying the reality of political awareness education for students at universities and colleges in Hai Duong province, the thesis proposes orientations and solutions to improve the effectiveness of political awareness education for students in Hai Duong province today 2.2 The research tasks: To achieve the above purpose, the thesis performs the following tasks: - An overview of the research situation related to the thesis topic and the problems raised for the thesis to continue to be solved - Analyzing and clarifying some theoretical issues about political awareness education for Vietnamese students today - Analyzing and clarifying the current situation of political awareness education for students at universities and colleges in Hai Duong province and pointing out the causes of that situation - Propose some orientations and solutions to improve the effectiveness of political awareness education for students at universities and colleges in Hai Duong province today The research object and scope of the doctoral thesis 3.1 The research object The thesis’s research object is the issue of political awareness education for students of universities and colleges in Hai Duong province today 3.2 The scope of the doctoral thesis - About content: Researching the issue of political awareness education for students through political theory subjects in the mainstream education program and through socio-political activities of the Youth Union and the Association Student - About space: Focusing on researching political awareness education for students in 10 universities and colleges in Hai Duong province today - About time: Researching on the issue of political awareness education for regular students at universities and colleges starting from the 11th National Congress when our Party set out a policy of fundamental and comprehensive reform of education and training from 2011 to present Theoretical basis and research methods of the thesis 4.1 The theoretical basis The theoretical basis for the study of the thesis topic is Marxism - Leninism, Ho Chi Minh’s thought, the views of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the State’s policies and laws, Hai Duong’s Party Committee documents, action plans, directives, and resolution on political awareness and political awareness education for students 4.2 The research methods The thesis uses the methodology of dialectical materialism and historical materialism; Popular research methods in social sciences such as surveys, sociological investigation, interviews, information some other subjects with typical works as follows: the book “Political theory education for Vietnamese students today” (2010) edited by Tran Thi Anh Dao; the article “What needs to be done to build political awareness for students at the University of Danang today” (2010) by Le Huu Ai and Lam Ba Hoa; book “Internet - students - lifestyle: Sociological research on new media” (2011) by Nguyen Quy Thanh; article “Strengthening political awareness education for Vietnamese students today” (2017) by Tran Thanh Giang; “Some raised issues for the education of political awareness for students in the Central Highlands today” (2017) by Pham Quoc Huong; “Enhancing effectiveness in political awareness education for students of the People’s Public Security academies in the current context” (2018) by Bui Truong Giang; “Philosophy and practice” (2020) by Nguyen Ngoc Ha and Nguyen Thi Bach Van Researching these above works shows that there is no work that directly mentions the current situation of political awareness education for students in Hai Duong province today 1.3 Overview of research works related to orientations and solutions to improve the effectiveness of political awareness education for students in Hai Duong province today In the work “Summarizing the implementation of Resolution 01NQ/TW of the Politburo on theoretical work in the current period” (2014), the authors spent a great deal of content presenting the issue of training political theory in recent years, mentioning work of political theory training, especially paying attention to innovating contents and methods in order to improve the quality of teaching political theory subjects for students at universities and colleges The authors especially emphasize the need to innovate political theory training to improve students’ theoretical thinking capacity Pham Dinh Khue, in the article “Political awareness and raising political awareness for Vietnamese students today” (2015), has proposed solutions to improve political awareness for Vietnamese students: Firstly, raising political awareness for students must be considered an important task in the cause of national construction and defense Secondly, to raise political awareness for students must be paid special attention to the education of Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh’s thought Thirdly, to innovate methods and contents of political awareness education for youth union members and students Fourthly, promoting the spirit of self-education of students in the formation of political awareness In the article “Raising political awareness, righteous ideals of life, and sense of responsibility to the community among youth in order to be worthy of the proud tradition of our nation” (2015), author Nguyen Dac Vinh, on the basis of the theory and practice, has proposed main solutions for the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union in raising political awareness, righteous living ideals, sense of responsibility to the community for young people In the article “The education of political awareness for students in universities today” (2020), from the analysis of concepts and affirming the importance of political awareness education for students, the authors Tran Viet Quang, Thai Ngoc Chau, and Le Thi Thanh Hieu have proposed main solutions to improve the effectiveness of political awareness education for Vietnamese students today These above works have mentioned solutions to improve the effectiveness of political awareness education for all classes of society in general and for students in particular from different angles CHAPTER THE EDUCATION OF POLITICAL AWARENESS FOR VIETNAMESE STUDENTS TODAY – SOME THEORETICAL ISSUES 2.1 The basic concepts 2.1.1 Awareness According to the Marxist point of view, awareness is the totality of human mental activities; including constitutive elements such as knowledge, emotions, beliefs, reason, and will, in which knowledge is the basic and core element 2.1.2 Politics Politics is the activity of social groups and individuals to realize and express their conflicting collective interests, to make decisions that are binding on the whole of society and exercised by state power 2.1.3 Political awareness Political awareness is a part of social awareness in a class society; is a system of views, theories, ideas, and attitudes of a class or social class on historical status, political tasks, strategies, and tactics of that class or social class in the development process of human history in general, in the development of each nation and nation in particular 2.1.4 Students and the political awareness of Vietnamese students today A student is a person who is studying and doing scientific research at a higher education institution, attending a college or university training program Students have typical psychological traits which are their strength compared to other age groups, for example, they are self-conscious, capable, and intellectually 11 developed, like to explore, discover, have needs and desire to succeed, dare to face challenges, and love to experience However, due to their youth and lack of life experience, students also have limitations that need to be overcome The political awareness of Vietnamese students today is the understanding and creative application of Marxist-Leninist theory, Ho Chi Minh’s thought, viewpoints, guidelines and lines of the Party, policies and laws of the State; patriotism, love of socialism, pride in the good traditions of the nation; is a positive attitude towards the cause of innovation; is the interest in politics, political relations, and political activities on the basis of turning this interest into political feelings, beliefs, and will as well as motivation for social activism for self-improvement and national prosperity 2.1.5 The education of political awareness for Vietnamese students today The education of political awareness for Vietnamese students today is an activity of propagating and teaching the principles of Marxism-Leninism, Ho Chi Minh’s thought, the Party’s lines and views, and the quintessence of political thought of the nation and humanity in order to form political knowledge, feelings, beliefs, wills, and ideals; forming a scientific worldview, revolutionary outlook on life, dialectical thinking method, scientific working method, contributing to promoting positivity in learning, training, and living, thereby forming holistic personality for students 2.2 The role, content, and factors affecting the education of political awareness for Vietnamese students today 2.2.1 The role of the education of political awareness for Vietnamese students today Firstly, political awareness education for Vietnamese students 12 today will help students have a dialectical materialistic worldview, a communist view of life, and a scientific methodology Secondly, political awareness education for current Vietnamese students will help students form a new human personality Thirdly, the political awareness education for Vietnamese students today will contribute to training high-quality human resources to meet the country’s development requirements Fourthly, political awareness education for Vietnamese students today will help students actively fight against hostile forces in the political and ideological fields 2.2.2 The contents of the education of political awareness for Vietnamese students today - Political knowledge education - Educating political emotions, beliefs, and will - Education of political ideals - Educating the good traditions of our nation 2.2.3 Factors affecting the education of political awareness for Vietnamese students today - The influence of globalization - The influence of the political and social environment - The influence of the subjects and contents of the political awareness education program for students - The influence of age psychological characteristics and selfeducation capacity of students 13 Sub-Conclusion of Chapter The political awareness of Vietnamese students today is the understanding and creative application of Marxist-Leninist theory, Ho Chi Minh‘s thought, the Party‘s viewpoints, undertakings and lines, and the laws and policies of the State; patriotism, love of socialism, and pride in the good tradition of the nation Educating students in political awareness helps them to have a worldview of dialectical materialism, a communist outlook on life, and a scientific methodology, to build them up on emotions, beliefs, and political will, arouse the desire to study, research, contribute to the country and assert themselves in society, thereby forming a comprehensive personality for students The education of political awareness for Vietnamese students has an important role and is an urgent issue at present, a task of all levels of party committees, authorities, and mass organizations, especially universities and colleges In order to improve the effectiveness of political awareness education for Vietnamese students today, in addition to determining the educational content, it is necessary to pay attention to the factors affecting education such as globalization and international integration, socio-political environment, the impact of subjects, contents, and educational program of political consciousness as well as age-psychological characteristics and self-education capacity of students 14 CHAPTER THE EDUCATION OF POLITICAL AWARENESS FOR STUDENTS IN HAI DUONG PROVINCE TODAY – CURRENT SITUATION AND CAUSES 3.1 The current situation of political awareness education for students in Hai Duong province 3.1.1 Political awareness of students in Hai Duong province today 3.1.1.1 Positive aspects Firstly, the majority of students in Hai Duong province now actively practice political knowledge, and have a serious attitude to study Marxist-Leninist science subjects, Ho Chi Minh’s thoughts, and the revolutionary line of the Communist Party of Vietnam Secondly, the majority of students in Hai Duong province today have the right political feelings, beliefs, will, and ideals Thirdly, the majority of students in Hai Duong province now have the right attitude toward preserving and promoting traditional national cultural values and Eastern cultural values; actively participate in political and social activities 3.1.1.2 Limitations First, a large number of students in Hai Duong province still have limited political knowledge They are not interested in studying and training to improve their political knowledge Second, a part of the students in Hai Duong province lacks faith in the Party’s renewal cause and in socialism Third, a part of the in Hai Duong province are vague about revolutionary ideals, not have the will to rise, and have not yet determined their ideal life Fourth, a part of the students in Hai Duong province lacks a sense of respect and preservation of cultural identity 15 3.1.2 The education of political awareness for students in Hai Duong province today 3.1.2.1 Achievements from the educational subjects Party Committees and School Administrators of universities and colleges in Hai Duong province have the role of directing and orienting the education of political awareness for students Party committees and school administrators have paid attention to directing the work of detecting, fostering, and admitting outstanding union members and students standing in the ranks of the Party Regularly monitoring and grasping the thought development of students, promptly solving difficulties and questions so that students can rest assured to study and practice, thereby creating confidence for students Creating conditions for lecturers teaching political theory subjects to study and improve their qualifications Political theory lecturers are an important force directly involved in political knowledge education for students The number of lecturers on political theory basically ensures the teaching work The quality of political theory lecturers is increasingly improved Scientific research activities for the teaching of political theory are also valued and deepened, and the scientific research capacity of the political theory teaching staff is enhanced Lecturers at universities and colleges in Hai Duong province teach according to the curriculum and textbooks of political theory subjects promulgated and guided by the Ministry of Education and Training A number of political theory lecturers have paid attention to innovating teaching contents, forms, and methods in order to improve the effectiveness of political awareness education for students 16 The innovation of testing and assessment methods is interesting to by the lecturers and has a positive impact on the teaching and learning process as well as the learning attitude of students The Youth Union and the Student Association have shown their role in educating political awareness for students - Political and ideological propaganda and education have always been respected by the Youth Unions and Associations in the whole province The contents and forms have been renewed and creative - The education of ethics and cultural lifestyle for students are particularly of interest to the Youth Union and Student Association of the universities and colleges - Surface activities and some in-depth activities launched by the Youth Union and Student Association of universities and colleges, for example, political thought forums, and learning forums associated with professional characteristics have aroused in students the sense of establishing self-position in life, establishing a career, and striving to rise 3.1.2.2 Limitations from the educational subject The direction and leadership of the Party Committees and the School Administrators still have some limitations The work of educating political awareness for students in some universities and colleges has not been paid enough attention and direction, not maintained regularly, only focusing on anniversaries and major holidays Some educational activities are still monotonous and not attractive The remuneration policy for lecturers and staff of the Youth Union and Student Association who work in educating political awareness for students has not been paid adequate attention, leading to a number of lecturers and staff of the Union and the Association be not enthusiastic at work Party member development has not been 17 paid due attention, and the rate of students being admitted is still low, affecting the beliefs and will of a part of students Many universities and colleges not hold regular dialogues with students so they have not timely grasped their thoughts and aspirations to educate and raise awareness for students Limitations from the teaching staff of political theory subjects There is a difference in the age of the instructors and lectures Young lecturers have not much practical experience and some not have the spirit of curiosity Elderly teachers in some schools account for a high percentage and have limitations in using active teaching methods and applying modern media Some lecturers have to teach many subjects, including those that are not in their right major so they can only convey what is in the textbook with little expansion of analysis and practical connection The scientific research capacity of some lecturers is still limited The topics only stop at the faculty and university level The number of topics is small and still heavily theoretical, not highly applicable The lecturers are not really interested in scientific research Some lecturers are afraid of innovating and mainly still use traditional teaching methods The format of the exam and test is not rich, the questions are not creative and many questions are just the reproduction of theoretical knowledge Some lecturers are not wholehearted and enthusiastic about teaching They have not listened to students’ opinions and aspirations and always impose their thoughts on learners Limitations from the Youth Union and Student Association in educating students on political awareness The content and form of organizing political and ideological educational activities of the Youth Union and Student Association in some schools are not effective and not attract students to participate 18 The propaganda work lacks depth and the construction of the annual work program in some schools is spread out, stereotyped, and has not paid attention to the specificity of the school The number of officials of the union is still small, mainly parttime so the quality is not high, and they have not paid attention to training and fostering the next team The ability to gather union members and students is not effective Some union officials are not really enthusiastic about their work Their skills and methods of organization are weak Emulation movements are also overlooked 3.2 Causes of the current situation of political awareness education for students in Hai Duong province 3.2.1 Causes of positive aspects Firstly, the country’s socio-economic development achievements Secondly, Party committees, mass organizations, and localities have paid attention to the education of political awareness for students Thirdly, the national cultural traditions and cultures of the East have profound values 3.2.2 Causes of limitations First, due to the temporary decline of socialism Second, due to the negative impact of the market economy Third, due to the limitations and weaknesses of the construction and development of Hai Duong province in a number of fields Fourth, due to the resistance of hostile forces Fifth, due to conditions, facilities, and equipment for teaching and learning political theory subjects have not met the requirements Sixth, the cause of the subjects of education Seventh, the cause of the objects of education 19 Sub-Conclusion of Chapter Surveying, evaluating, and analyzing the current situation of political awareness education for students in Hai Duong province in recent years, it can be seen that the majority of students have a serious attitude toward studying political theory subjects, have the right political feelings, beliefs, will and ideals, and actively participate in socio-political activities The work of educating political awareness for students at some schools is concerned, directed and effectively implemented by educational subjects The contents, methods, and forms of political awareness education for students have improved a lot These are the results achieved in the political awareness education for students that need to be maintained and promoted In addition to the positive aspects, political awareness education for students of universities and colleges in Hai Duong province currently has limitations and weaknesses that are the direction, inspection, and urging of the Party committees at all levels have not been closely followed, not given due attention; political and ideological education activities of the Youth Union and the Student Association are still heavily formal, and the skills of the Union and Association officials are still weak; and some lecturers teaching political theory subjects have not actively innovated teaching methods A part of students not have a sense of self-education, lack initiative and positivity, and are easily drawn into negative activities These limitations have objective and subjective reasons, in which, the main reason is subjective That reality requires drastic and feasible solutions to overcome the shortcomings and inadequacies, and continue to improve the effectiveness of teaching political awareness for students in Hai Duong province now and in the future 20 CHAPTER ORIENTATIONS AND SOLUTIONS TO IMPROVE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF POLITICAL AWARENESS EDUCATION FOR STUDENTS IN HAI DUONG PROVINCE TODAY 4.1 Orientations to improve the effectiveness of political awareness education for students in Hai Duong province today Firstly, the political awareness education for students in Hai Duong province today must be associated with the implementation of the socio-economic development strategy Secondly, political awareness education for students in Hai Duong province must ensure the principle of unity between theory and practice Thirdly, the political awareness education for students in Hai Duong province must be associated with the education of revolutionary ethics and the good traditional values of the nation Fourthly, the political awareness education for students in Hai Duong province must pay special attention to the education of Marxism - Leninism and Ho Chi Minh’s thought 4.2 Solutions to improve the effectiveness of political awareness education for students in Hai Duong province today First, promoting the role of the Party Committees, School Administrators, and mass organizations in universities and colleges of Hai Duong province in educating political awareness for students today Second, building a contingent of lecturers to teach political theory in terms of quantity and quality Third, continuing to innovate program contents, curricula, and teaching methods of political theory subjects 21 Fourth, promoting the positivity, initiative, and creativity of students Sub-Conclusion of Chapter In order to well in the education of political awareness for students in Hai Duong province today, it is necessary to have a longterm strategy and an appropriate educational orientation Specifically, political awareness education is associated with the implementation of the socio-economic development strategy, ensuring the principle of unity between theory and practice Political awareness education must be associated with revolutionary ethical education and the good traditional values of the nation Focusing on educating Marxism Leninism and Ho Chi Minh’s thoughts Simultaneously, carrying out synchronous solutions such as promoting the role of the Party Committees, the School Administrators, and mass organizations in universities and colleges of Hai Duong province; building a contingent of lecturers to teach political theory in terms of quantity and quality; continuing to innovate content of program, curricula, and teaching methods of political theory subjects; promoting the positivity, initiative and creativity of students in studying and training to improve their own political awareness for contributing to improving the quality of training to meet the requirements and tasks set out 22 CONCLUSION Student means a person who studies and researches at a higher education institution, attending college or university training programs Students are placed at the center of the strategy of fostering and promoting human resources, therefore taking care of and developing students is both a goal and a driving force to ensure the stability and sustainable development of the country In order to fulfill their mission, students must have the political courage, qualifications, ambition, and revolutionary ideals, absolute loyalty to the Party’s leadership line, to the path to socialism, and the renovation work that our Party and people are carrying out Consequently, in addition to educating scientific knowledge, a very important and necessary task is to educate political awareness for students in general and students in Hai Duong province today in particular To improve the effectiveness of political awareness education for students in Hai Duong province today, the author of the thesis realizes that it is necessary to perform the following specific tasks: It is determined that the subjects directly involved in political awareness education for students are identified as the Party Committees, the School Administrators, teaching staff of political theory subjects, and mass organizations such as Youth Union, Student Association at universities and colleges Determining the content of political awareness education for students, that is, educating political knowledge through Marxist-Leninist science subjects, Ho Chi Minh thought, the revolutionary line of the Communist Party of Vietnam; educating to build political feelings, beliefs, wills, and ideals; educating the good traditions of the Vietnamese nation It is also important to note that political awareness education for students today is influenced by many factors such as globalization and international integration, socio-political environment, the impact of 23 subjects, content, and programs of political awareness education as well as age-psychological characteristics and self-education capacity of students In the past time, along with the strong innovation of the education sector, the Party students' political awareness, the subjects’ work of educating political awareness for students in Hai Duong province today, and clarifying the subjective and objective causes of both advantages and limitations, the thesis has given directions and proposed solutions to improve the effectiveness of political awareness education of students in Hai Duong province In there, the main solutions are promoting the role of the Party Committees, the School Administators, and mass organizations in universities and colleges of Hai Duong province in the work of educating political awareness for students today; building a contingent of lecturers to teach political theory in terms of quantity and quality; continuing to innovate program contents, curricula, teaching methods of political theory
