One dog has shown himself to be especially good at both finding his way around and getting food Every morning Rusty the dog goes down to his local railway station He gets in a queue with all the other passengers to board the train from the suburbs where he lives, and then rides into the city centre When he gets there, Rusty jumps off the train and goes off to the shops He always goes around all his favourite food shops, where he’s given special things to eat First stop is a corner shop, where he has hand-made biscuits that the owner gives him every morning for his breakfast 'He's quite particular,’ says the owner ‘He’ll only accept his favourite biscuits and refuses any others I try to give him Even though I’m sure he’s hungry, he’s just not interested!’ Then later in the morning, Rusty goes over to his friend the restaurant owner, where he gets a plate of food for his lunch When he's eaten everything, Rusty makes his way home on the train When Rusty first started making this trip, station staff refused to allow him to get on the train without anyone to accompany him or buy a ticket for him But then they felt sorry for him and have now given him a free ticket, because they’ve been so impressed by his cleverness at finding his way around the city’s complicated transport system without getting lost However, at one stage Rusty worried all his friends in the city by failing to appear at his favourite eating places for several days This started a search for the missing dog, and his picture was shown in newspapers and on TV Rusty finally returned to find he’d become a TV star "He’s obviously been off on an adventure,’ said one TV viewer, "but Rusty’s not telling anyone what he’s been up to!’ The corner shop owner was certainly glad that Rusty was back 'Thanks to the publicity I’ve got through Rusty, my shop’s full of customers - and they all want to buy some of Rusty’s favourite biscuits!’ Exercise 2: Look at the sentences below about bees Lisa first saw the bees in her garden when she opened the window A B Lisa went back into the kitchen because she heard the bees A B Lisa was scared when she saw the bees A B 15 The beekeeper thought it was funny that the bees had landed on Lisa’s cake A B Even though the bees had eaten a lot of the cake, Lisa still ate it A B When John saw the insects, he knew immediately that they were bees A B John stopped his car because he wanted to call a beekeeper A B The queen bee was in the boot of John’s car A B The bees followed the car because they could see the queen A B 10 John got out of his car when the beekeeper arrived A B Most people enjoy seeing bees in gardens and parks, but it can be scary when they’re flying together in large numbers, and it can be even more frightening if they come a bit too close! A few years ago, Lisa Turnbull was in her home in York She had made a cake and left it on the kitchen table She was looking forward to eating it, but when she opened the kitchen window to help the cake cool more quickly, she unfortunately didn’t notice the large number of bees flying around in her back garden A few minutes later, Lisa heard a loud noise coming from her kitchen She opened the door and saw a huge swarm of bees all over her kitchen table The bees had left their old home and were looking for a new one It seems that the queen bee, which controls all the others, had fancied a bit of cake and landed on it She was followed by 15,000 others! Luckily, Lisa knew a bit about bees, so Last summer, John Norton from Manchester had a similar experience with a large number of bees He was driving home after a long day at work when he noticed thousands of insects following his car He realised after a while that they were bees and stopped his car, hoping that they would continue flying on and leave him in peace However, when he stopped the car they landed on the back of it and stayed there Feeling rather nervous, John used his phone to look online and find the phone number of a local beekeeper John called him, and the beekeeper arrived half an hour later It turned out that the queen bee had flown into the boot of the car while John was putting some shopping into it When he closed the boot, she was stuck inside, so when he drove off, the rest of the bees followed They somehow knew where their queen was even though they couldn’t see her John stayed in his car and didn’t get out until the beekeeper had safely removed all the bees – which took over three hours! 16 she knew they weren’t dangerous and That’s a good excuse for being late home! she didn’t need to be afraid She calmly closed the door and called a local beekeeper who found the situation very amusing and took the bees away Although her cake wasn’t badly damaged, Lisa didn’t fancy eating it! Part Exercise 1 Question 1-5 Read the text and answer the questions below If you are a comic book fan or just love free things, you are in luck because Saturday, May is Free Comic Book Day As the name indicates, it is the day when retailers across the globe will give out free comic books to anyone that walks into the store Celebrated on the first Saturday of May, the annual event, which began in 2002, is the brainchild of retailer Joe Field The owner of Flying Colours Comics & Other Cool Stuff was inspired by the success of similar events like Free Cone Day and suggested the idea to retailers, publishers, and distributors He believed it would make people, both young and old visit their neighborhood store and revive interest in comic books Over the past sixteen years, retailers have given away over 12 million comic books and the numbers are only growing Not every comic book in the store is free However, with 50 specially published titles to choose from, there is something to suit every taste Even if none of the free offerings catch your fancy, a visit to the store might still be worth the effort That's because vendors usually discount all comic books and other merchandise on this fun day The Tribune What is the writer’s main aim in writing the text? A COMIC SALES EXPLODE B COMIC SELLS FOR RECORD AMOUNT C COMICS ARE GOING OUT OF FASHION D COME AND GET YOUR FREE GIFT Exercise 2 Question 1-5 Read the text and answer the questions below Moonshine The band Moonshine released their third CD last week “Here again” is a follow-up to “The Waves” There have been a few changes since the last CD, with Tom Wilcott on bass guitar replacing Simon McVee, who left the band last year, and the arrival of Tom Simpson on drums It is clear from the first song on the CD, which is a dance tune, that the band is no longer going to concentrate on slow songs The second tune is also a dance tune and is even louder and heavier Most later tracks are in the band’s more usual slow style These two tracks will certainly come as a surprise to many fans Either of them could easily become a hit single though, because they are excellent Singer Rob Letchford gets a chance to really show how good he is, reaching each note perfectly Fans should be grateful he recorded the songs for the album before he had trouble with his throat This has resulted in the band having to cancel their next tour (Anyone who has bought tickets need not worry as all the concerts will be arranged as soon as Rob has recovered.) On this CD, Moonshine show they can produce perfect music in a variety of styles, from the slow ones we are familiar with to the ones that will keep your feet tapping I 18 did feel, though, that they put their best songs at the beginning and the last few tracks were not of quite the same quality Despite this, “Here again” is certain to be a big hit and bring more success to this band What is the writer trying to do? A make suggestions about how a band could improve B offer his opinion of a band’s new CD C give information about the members of a band D explain why a CD has been so successful What does the writer say about the two songs at the beginning of the CD? A They are unlike the songs the band normally performs B They are similar to other songs on the CD C They may not be enjoyed as much as other songs on the CD D They are too loud and heavy What does the writer tell us about Rob Letchford? A He was not at his best when he recorded the CD B He is unable to any more performances C He has become unwell since making the CD D He will not appear at some performances with the band What conclusion does the writer come to about the CD? A He enjoyed the slow songs in particular B He prefers some of their earlier CDs C He thinks some of the songs may become annoying D He feels the songs at the end are less good Which of the following did a fan say about the CD? A I’m so pleased the band have made a CD with all their best hits I love their music, so I know all these songs and can sing along to them B This CD is better than the last one because it’s got some dance tunes on it as well as some lovely slow tunes C I saw the band perform this CD recently at a concert so I went and bought it immediately D The members of this band haven’t changed since they started and this show how they have learnt to produce an amazing sound together Part Exercise Question 1-10 Read the text below and choose the correct word for each space 19 There are (0) different kinds of computer game Casual games are quick and easy to play People can pick up and play the game (1) _they have a spare minute or two You can find (2) _on your mobile phone, on your computer and even on your television They include popular games (3) Solitaire and (4) type of game is serious games These games are designed to teach players something useful One of the (5) _ running serious games is the Microsoft Flight Simulator It was made in 1982, and since then, many (6) have used it to learn to fly planes Other games teach police and fire fighters what in a(n) (7) _ Language learning software does not typically fall into this (8) , however These are educational games In recent years, an (9) number of games have been created to improve the player’s skills and knowledge They help younger kids learn to count and spell, and teach older kids (10) _ mathematics and technology A lots A whenever A their A example A Another A oldest A poets A emergency A game A increase A to B many B while B it B like B Other B popular B stewards B security B system B increasingly B with C C C C C C C C C C C much during its as Different greater pensioners safety group increasing about D most D since D them D such D One D longest D pilots D disadvantage D way D increases D for Exercise Question 1-10 Read the text below and choose the correct word for each space For the last ten years, engineers have been measuring noise (0) in Britain’s cities The study has just been completed, and it shows that there is more noise than ever (1) More and more people are being driven (2) _ by the sounds of the city Complaints about noise have increased constantly over the (3) _ twenty years Last year almost 300,000 complaints were made The least (4) sources of noise include loud music, barking dogs, mobile phones, car alarms and home (5) _ We are all familiar with the (6) _ How is it that car alarm can be heard by everyone except the owner of the car?
