Curriculum Night Hello! I am Ms LeVeque I love: reading, dancing, singing, dinner parties, friends and family, being outdoors, traveling, and teaching kids! I was born and raised near Seattle (Bellevue) and attended Seattle Pacific University for both my undergrad and graduate degrees This will be my 6th year at NW and my 9th year teaching 5th graders! In-Person Learning Schedule and people to know! Schedule and Expectations 9:10 - Attendance/Announcements ● 9:15-9:50 - Specialists (every day except Thursday) 9:50- 10:25 Classroom Meeting and Whole Group Reading 10:25-10:40 - Recess ● 10:40-11:25 - Writing and Snack *Fridays, PE during this time ● 11:25-12:25 - Math 12:25-1:00 - Lunch and Recess 1:00-1:20 - Grammar and Spelling 1:20-2:20 - Small Group Reading Students should be in their line by 9:10 Attendance and lunch count are taken by 9:15 Students who come later than that should stop by the office for a tardy pass š Students are prepared for school each morning with the proper materials and completed homework assignments Students will “Be the Three” in our classroom “Be the Three” classroom expectations were built with students and all students have signed and agreed to follow those rules in order to ensure that every student has a successful 5th grade year 2:20-2:35 - Recess Reminder - Wednesday afternoons are early release afternoons 2:35-3:35 - Science and Social Studies (Art on Tuesdays from 3:10-3:45) 3:35-3:45 - Pack-up and Dismissal 2021-2022 Ms Harnish (library) MR WARD (music) SCHEDULE Music & PE (twice a week for 35 min.) Ms.smedberg (PE) Ms Tran (Art) Welcome to Northwood Physical Education Learning Standards • Locomotor skills (ie gallop, hop, jump) • Object-control skills (ie catching fly balls, foot dribbling) • Knowledge of movement concepts, principals, and strategies • Knowledge of components of fitness (ie Aerobic fitness) A note from the gym It is always exciting to start a new year Having already spent a few days with your students, I can tell it is going to be a great year! In PE students can work at their own pace in a safe, supportive learning environment Activities are designed to provide all students with equal amounts of practice and to get kids moving as much as possible Students are not segregated by gender or ability We support one another as we all grow To create a learning environment where everyone can succeed I expect students to always keep their bodies in control, try their best, and help others On PE days, sending your student(s) in active wear and tennis shoes will help them safely enjoy full activity -Ms.Smedberg • Achieves and maintains health-enhancing levels of physical fitness • Participates regularly in physical activity • Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others • Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and/or social interaction Academic Learning Requirements Expectations: General Grading • Be Safe -Skills • Be Respectful • Be Responsible Students will be graded based on their ability to demonstrate the skill during the performance assessment Skills are explicitly taught with the movement patterns broken down so that all students understand how to move their bodies to execute the movement successfully PE Lessons and Learning Skill Grades (1-4) All students will start off the year playing “Getting to Know You” games and will go over expectations and routines for both the gym and playground Students are given two grades in PE: Exceeds Standard Meets Standard Progressing toward Standard Below Standard Although students will participate in a wide variety of skills and activities throughout the year, a select set of skills will be assessed each trimester -Sportsmanship This year we will be going over general ball handling skills, with both our feet and hands We will play a variety of games and build our cardio-respiratory and muscular endurance Students will be graded on their ability to play by the rules, follow directions, maintain safety, contribute to other’s success and participate positively If you have any questions feel free to email me I look forward to working with you and your family! :) 26 Assessments ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Reflected on 5th Grade Standards-based report card Mondo - close reading assessments and small group work Writing - unit writing pieces (narrative, expository nonfiction, informational) Math - two to three quick quizzes per unit as well as pre and post unit tests ○ Corrections and retests are required if student receives below standard ○ Parent signature is required for all unit tests to maintain communication Spelling - based on weekly lesson Spring Testing - MSP (Measure of Student Progress) in Science SBAC ( Smarter Balance) in October (4th and 5th) and Spring - Literacy and Math Rubric Aimsweb - reading and math fluency Consistently goes Above and Beyond Portfolios - taken home monthly for review 27 Consistently Demonstrates (Standard) Usually Demonstrates Seldom Demonstrates Communication and Classroom Information Home/school communication, volunteer opportunities, field trips, and snacks Home/School Communication šBinder Reminder- Please check your student’s Binder Reminder every night to look for daily homework and due dates šE-mail- The best way to contact me is through email If you have a quick question I try to respond within 24 hours If there is a mid-day schedule change for your student please call the office to ensure that I get the message Thanks! šMeetings- Please schedule a time to meet with me in advance so I can give you my full attention šProgress- I will send home all tests to be signed by a parent This is my way of communicating your child’s academic progress with you šSeesaw- We use the SeeSaw app in the classroom to help students and families stay connected during the school day as well gives families the opportunity to see what’s happening in our classroom 29 Snack ✘ Every morning we will have snack following our morning recess ✘ Students need to bring their own snack- they cannot share (safety) ✘ Snacks should be healthy finger foods- top three ingredients should not be sugar ✘ Examples: fruit, veggies, crackers, pretzels, seaweed snacks, or rice cakes ✘ Please not send snacks that require a utensil Thank you! ✘ We are nut-free! Please no snacks with nuts! 30 Volunteers and Field Trips Volunteer opportunities as of now are limited due to safety protocols! Please reach out to our room parent, Colleen Barneson, if interested in supporting our classroom in any way!
