University of Maryland Freshman Academic Profile High School Unweighted Grade Point Average 3.66 GPA SAT average score range 1330 - 1470 ACT average score range 30 - 34 % Accepted 44.5% Total number of applicants 33,922 Total number accepted 15,096 Howard University Freshman Academic Profile High School Unweighted Grade Point Average 3.6 GPA SAT Average Score 1210 ACT Average Score 25 % Accepted 36% Total number of applicants 21,009 Total number accepted 7,561 Salisbury University Freshman Academic Profile High School Unweighted Grade Point Average 3.7 GPA SAT Average Score 1212 ACT Average Score 20-25 % Accepted 62% Total number of applicants 8,983 Total number accepted 5,570 HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS Subject Area Required Credits English / ESOL Math (incl Algebra & Geometry) Science (incl Biology & Physical) Social Studies (incl US, NSL, Mod World) Physical Education Health 0.5 Fine Arts 1.0 Technology Education 1.0 World Language OR Career Program of Study 2.0 Other Classes / Electives 2.5 Student Service Learning (SSL) Hours 75 MCPS PROMOTION POLICY - Must earn credits to be promoted to 10th Grade - Must earn 10 or more credits to be promoted to 11th Grade - Must earn 15 or more credits to be promoted to 12th Grade GPA (GRADE POINT AVERAGE) One component of academic success • Marking Period GPA’s appear on your report card and are used to determine eligibility for sports/extra-curricular activities • Your Cumulative GPA is made up of only your final semester grades, not marking period by marking period • Only semester grades and your cumulative unweighted and weighted GPAs appear on your transcript GPA WEIGHTED VS UNWEIGHTED • Letter grades in Honors, Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) classes are weighted • Additional GPA points are awarded for grades of C or higher in these classes • Colleges like to see students taking the most rigorous classes possible while earning grades of C or higher in them • Colleges are NOT impressed with grades of D or E in weighted courses COUNSELING SECRETARY - Ensure students sign in before seeing their counselor - Answer phone calls - Help students and parents with questions or concerns - Schedule meetings for parents, students and counselors MS DEANNE WEILER REGISTRAR - New enrollments - Transcripts - Student profile information, change in address, phone # , etc - Maintaining student records MS ERIN STAMETS COLLEGE AND CAREER COORDINATOR - Standardized test information - College information - Scholarship information - Career information - Information regarding military options MS MARY HULL Supporting your Freshman Ms LeBright, Counselor RICHARD MONTGOMERY HIGH SCHOOL OBJECTIVES By the end of this section, we will have discussed: • Academic Challenges • Roles and Advocacy • Attendance ACADEMIC CHALLENGES Courses in high school are often more demanding than in middle school and students assume greater responsibility for learning content and completing assignments on time How students can best advocate for themselves… Approach teachers before/after class or during lunch/after school to ask about materials, assessments, or other concerns ● Ask what they can to improve ● Parent-teacher communication will be more productive if the teacher has heard from the student first Ask a trusted adult to help you advocate for yourself, (school counselor, ESOL counselor, teacher, staff, parent, etc.) Ask to speak to department Resource Teacher Ask to speak to the appropriate Administrator and/or Coordinator How parents can best advocate… Encourage students to self-advocate first Contact teachers after the student has contacted the teacher if concerns persist When necessary, contact the department Resource Teacher When necessary, contact the appropriate Coordinator and/or Administrator RESOURCES FOR ACADEMIC SUPPORT • Meet with ANY teacher for help during lunch (50 min) • National Honor Society Tutors – One to One Assigned Tutors – Link to sign up under “Students” tab on RMHS website • Homework Club (Tues/Thurs after school) • Meet with your counselor • Spin Book • Google or MyMCPS Classroom WHERE CAN STUDENT GRADES BE FOUND? • Go to the RM webpage • Scroll down on the “Home” screen • Click on MyMCPS Student Portal • Log in using your Student ID and the password you received in the mail • Don’t remember your password? Email your student’s counselor! What happens IF students fail a class: – Ways to fail a class: E and E3 (failure due to attendance) – A semester grade of “E” is figured into your GPA and you will not receive the credit for the course – Student will need to make up the lost credit – Lost credits can keep student from moving to the next grade or graduating on time ATTENDANCE IMPACTS GRADES ● Students are at risk for losing credit in a class if they have more than unexcused absences ○ unexcused tardies = unexcused absence ○ unexcused absences or more = E3 (loss of credit due to attendance) ● Attendance Intervention Plan (AIP Form) JOIN A CLUB!
