professional issues affecting anesthesia nursing practice STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1 Critique evidence based practice research that addresses conceptual, ethical, legal, and methodological issues related to anesthesia nursing practice Analyze practice patterns, legal and ethical issues, and regulatory policies affecting nursing anesthesia Synthesize recommendations for change or modification of practice patterns, legal and ethical issues, and regulatory policies that affect nursing anesthesia that are based in current evidence based practice TEACHING METHODS AND ASSIGNMENTS FOR ACHIEVING LEARNING OUTCOMES: This course format will combine didactic presentations, student participation and presentations, discussion, and written assignments Graded Activity In class participation % of Final Grade 10% SLO 1-3 Discussion board participation 35% Paper/advocacy activity 25% Health policy advocacy presentation 30% 1-3 In class and on-line participation (10 + 35= 45%): The instructor will post assigned readings, presentations, outlines, instructional guides and/or discussion questions in class as well as for each on-line session to Canvas under the Discussion tab Students will review the assignments and participate in class and on-line discussion boards These discussions and responses should be thorough, based on the assigned readings, and be respectful of the opinions of your classmates The class will be divided into teams The teams will be posted under the Module section of Canvas For the assigned week, each team is responsible for developing and posting one question related to the assigned readings for the week, monitoring the question, and facilitating the discussion of their question Each member of the team will also contribute one (1) primary response to the other question(s) posted by the instructors that week, but not required to participate in the discussions of “other” questions The students should be active participants on the discussion boards on of the days, should post a primary answer, incorporating information from the reading assignments, to each question, and should post to “total” responses to their fellow classmates’ comments for the week in order to be eligible for full credit for participation for that particular week Questions will be posted on Thursdays Please refrain from posting prior to Monday each week There will be discussion board sessions worth points each All discussion board written responses will follow the most current edition of the American Psychological Association (APA) or American Medical Association (AMA) format, include references, and conform to the course discussion board guidelines Paper Advocacy Activity (25%) Students will write one (1) 6-8 page paper detailing an anesthesia-related health policy issue, practice patterns, legal and ethical issues or regulatory policies and participate in one (1) political advocacy activity such as attending a professional nurse anesthesia association meeting, BON hearing, contact the NCANA Government Relations Committee identifying an issue for CRNAs, legislative hearing, participate in nurse anesthesia association lobby day, meet with a state legislator in your assigned district, and or the Mid-Year Assembly in the spring with formal write up of the event All written submissions will follow the most current edition of the American Psychological Association (APA) or American Medical Association (AMA) format These submissions are due by April 10, 2018 One point will be deducted for each day past the due date the assignment is submitted Healthcare Policy Paper: The requirement of this assignment, students will write and submit a paper that: Identifies a specific health care policy issue (needs to be anesthesia related) Explores the background of the issue Discusses the importance of the issue Educates the target audience about the issue Provides valid arguments for supporting or opposing the issue The paper must conform to APA or AMA style and referenced appropriately Health Care Policy Advocacy Presentation (30%): Students will prepare a 10-15 minute presentation on a health care policy advocacy issue Students will present their work on the last day of class in May Presentations should briefly highlight the policy issue and the implications of nurse anesthesia practice In cases where students have selected similar topics, one presentation on the particular topic may be randomly chosen GRADING SCALE: 93-100 85-92 84 or less A B F 4.0 3.0
