LITERATURE REVIEW
Speaking is often regarded as the most crucial skill among the foreign language competencies of listening, reading, and writing The close relationship between learning and applying oral English emphasizes the need for classrooms to foster spoken language use This support helps students connect their existing knowledge with new learning, as speaking is a key factor in forming first impressions As noted by Ur (1984), a significant number of foreign language learners prioritize the ability to speak.
Speaking is defined as the action of conveying information or expressing feelings through speech, involving psychological, physiological, and physical stages According to Chaney, speaking encompasses the process of building and sharing meaning using both verbal and non-verbal symbols across various contexts Theodore Huebner emphasizes that language is fundamentally speech, which serves as a means of communication through sounds He notes that speaking is a vital skill utilized in daily life, whether at school or in other settings, and it is developed through consistent practice and repetition.
Burke, Teaching Oral Communication in Grades K-8 (Boston: Allyn &Bacon,
1998), p 13 Tarigan (1990:3-4) defines that “speaking is a language skill that is developed in child life, which is produced by english speaking skill, and at that period speaking skill is learned”.
Speaking is defined as the ability to effectively express oneself in various situations, articulate actions or events with precision, and fluently convey a sequence of ideas.
Furthermore, Tarigan (1990: 8) said that “Berbicara adalah cara untuk berkomunikasi yang berpengaruh hidup kita sehari-hari” It means that
“speaking as the way of communication influences our individual life strongly”.
Speaking is an expression of our perceptions, emotions, and thoughts, serving as a means for us to communicate our feelings to others This process can be understood as an interaction between two parties, where the desire for connection drives the need to be heard.
Speaking is a fundamental aspect of communication, both in general and business English According to Chaney (1998), it is the process of creating and sharing meaning through verbal and non-verbal symbols across various contexts This highlights the importance of speaking as a skill that requires greater emphasis in both first and second language education, as it enables students to effectively express themselves and navigate different communicative situations Additionally, speaking is a complex productive skill that encompasses more than mere word pronunciation, as noted by Brown (1994) and Burns & Joyce.
Speaking is an interactive process that involves both producing and processing information, as noted by 1997 It is essential for learners to understand when, why, and how to use language effectively, which highlights the importance of sociolinguistic competence over merely knowing the technical aspects of language, such as grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary.
Through research, three kinds of speaking situations can be refered as:
Interactive communication involves face-to-face conversations and telephone calls, requiring active listening and speaking skills In these interactions, participants can request clarification or ask for slower speech However, certain situations, like giving a speech to an audience, are only partially interactive, as the audience cannot interrupt and can only listen, such as in a radio broadcast This limits our ability to gauge feedback through expressions, facial cues, or body language.
Some situation may be totally non- interactive because recording a speech for a broadcast.
Here are some micro- skill involved speaking:
- Pronounce the distinctive sound clearly enough to distingush them.
- Use stress, intonation pattern and rhythmic pattern of language clearly enough so that people can understand what is said.
- Use the correct forms of words, change tense, case or gender.
- Make the main ideas stand out, clearly.
Harmer (2001, p.269-271) mentioned elements of language features and mental and social processing as follows:
2.4.1 Language feature There are a number of devises which are necessary for spoken production
Connected speech Speakers should link their utterances and do not use separated phonemes.
These sounds may be modified omitted added or weakened
Students should develop key suprasegmental features, including body language and pitch variation, as these expressive devices are essential for clearly conveying messages, particularly in face-to-face interactions.
Learners often rely on the same lexical phrases across various contexts To enhance their communication skills, teachers should introduce a variety of phrases that serve different functions, enabling students to effectively navigate diverse speaking situations.
Learners greatly benefit from negotiating language, highlighting the teacher's role in providing phrases that facilitate requests for clarification Additionally, it is essential for speakers to structure their discourse clearly to enhance listener comprehension.
2.4.2 Mantel / social processing Knowing the language skills or devices as a part of spoken production is not enough since it is involves immediate processing while interacting with one or more participants
Effective language processing is essential for learners, as it enables them to organize information coherently, ensuring that listeners understand the speaker's intended message Additionally, speakers must efficiently retrieve words and phrases from memory during interactions, facilitating smooth communication.
Effective communication relies on interaction between speakers, highlighting the importance of being a good listener A skilled speaker must understand the feelings of others and recognize the appropriate moments to contribute or allow others to speak.
Effective instant communication relies on our ability to process information quickly The faster we can understand and respond to what others are saying, the more effective we become as communicators Therefore, speakers must be prepared to process information on the spot and respond promptly to engage in meaningful dialogue.
2.5 The Importance of Speaking 2.5.1 It shows your willingness to go beyond basic business standards.
Back in the early days of pre-globalization, knowing English was a plus.
Like it or not, it was a mark of superior knowledge and sophistication It made you look impressive to people.
Many employers assume that all candidates, regardless of their background or education, possess proficiency in English This expectation persists even for individuals who have been educated in a different language or hail from regions where English is not commonly spoken.
Today you are expected to know English.
