        • Although this is not a theoretical work, students may follow some guidelines on how to help themselves to evaluate their own work. Below are general principles which are relevant to all translation.

        • 2.2.1.1. Meaning

        • The translation should reflect accurately the meaning of original text. Nothing should be arbitrarily added or moved, though occasionally part of the meaning can be “transpose”.

      • Eg: He was limps with fatigue

        • 2.2.1.2. Form

      • The order of words and ideas in the translation should match that in the original as closely as possible. This is particularly in the form and order of words. When in doubt, underline in the original text, the words on which the main stress falls. In English, emphasis or main stress can be obtained through inversion of word order and using different structure such as No sooner… than…, It is/was … that (who)…, Only by…, etc.

      • Eg: It is the ideal condition of the “equal start” which only our most progressive forms of modern education try to regain.

        • Languages often differ greatly in their levels of formality in a given context (say, in a business letter). To resolve these differences, the translator must distinguish between formal and fixed expressions

      • SL grammatical constructions are converted to their nearest TL equivalents, but the lexical words are again translated singly out of context. As a pre-translation process, this indicates the problem to be solved.

      • Eg: I used to be crazy about her.

        • 2.2.2.3. Faithful Translation

      • A faithful translation attempts to reproduce the precise contextual meaning of the original meaning within the constraint of the TL grammatical structures. It “transfers” cultural words and preserves the degree of grammatical and lexical “abnormality” in the translation. It attempts to be completed faithfully to intentions and the text realization of the SL writer.

      • Eg: Love me, love my dog

      • Yêu tôi, (thì phải) yêu con chó của tôi

        • 2.2.2.4. Semantic translation

      • This method must pay more attention to the aesthetic value (that is, the beautiful and natural sound) of the SL text compromising on “meaning” where appropriate so that no assonance, word-play or repetition jars in the finished version. Furthermore, it may translate less important cultural words by culturally neutral third or functional terms but not by cultural equivalents and it may make other small concessions to the readership. The distinction between “faithful” and “semantic” translation is that the first in uncompromising and dogmatic while the second is more flexible; admits the creative exception to 100% of fidelity and allows for translator’s intuitive empathy with the original.

      • Eg: Then the time returns as it once appeared.

        • 2.2.2.5. Adaptation

      • This is the “freest” form of translation, used mainly for plays (comedies) and poetry. The themes, characters, plots are usually preserved, the SL culture is converted to the TL one, and the text is rewritten.

        • 2.2.2.6. Free Translation

      • This method reproduces the matter without the manner, or the content without the form of the original. Usually, it is a paraphrase much longer than the original, a so-called “intra-lingual translation”, often prolix, pretentious, and seeming non-translated at all.

      • Eg: Have a good trip!

      •  Chúc thượng lộ bình an!

      • Shall we go for a blow?

      •  Chúng ta đi dạo mát nhé?

        • 2.2.2.7. Idiomatic Translation

      • Idiomatic translation reproduces the “message” of the source text but tend to distort nuances of meaning by preferring colloquialisms and idioms where these do not exist in the original.

      • Eg: As rich as Rockefeller

      • I’m afraid it’s job news

        • 2.2.2.8. Communicative Translation

      • This method attempts to render the exact contextual meaning of the original in such a way that both content and language are readily acceptable and comprehensible to the readership. This translation is rather often news on radio or in newspapers. Sometimes communicative and semantic translation may coincide with each other.

    • My major is English Translation and Interpretation, so I did study profoundly about translation theory and practices. During my process of learning at Faculty of English Duy Tan University, I had the golden opportunity to study many useful lessons which concern to translation with the well-qualified teachers. Nevertheless, I faced many difficulties and challenges during the implementation of this paper.

    • Firstly, the author used a diverse vocabulary. One of the most difficult issues was determining which meanings of words and phrases to use in a given context. If I didn't use the strict sense of the word during the translation process, the meaning of the sentence would obviously change. So, I had to read extensively on the subject. Then, I should find out and se information from the internet as well as a variety of dictionaries in order to translate words with the right and exact context. Besides, I also had to settle a lot of idioms and ambiguous structures. As a result, analyzing and translating such complicated pieces will be much simpler and clear for me.

    • Secondly, there's the systemic problem, which is also a thorny issue. This text contains many complicated structures and phrases that are difficult or even obscure to analyse in this text. It made me really upset because couldn't figure out what the text meant exactly. So I sought guidance from my supervisor and my friends in order to gain a better understanding and translation.

    • Thirdly, the structure and use of words in English and Vietnamese are entirely different. So, in order to accurately communicate the details of the original text to the reader, I need to understand and interpret the meaning in order to fit the Vietnamese writing style.

    • Finally, I store my mind in order to broaden my public knowledge based on my limited experience. In the period of executing this thesis, there were many times I was confused and wasted a lot of time because of some American cultural and religious vocabulary.

    • In short, to avoid making the same mistakes and improve the quality of my similar projects in the future, vocabulary, structures and general knowledge are three main points that I should stay focused on.

clause: “I was able to achieve many remarkable outcomes” - Dependent clause 1: “that constantly reinforced my new belief ” - Dependent clause 2: “that I could use my mind to create a better life” - Restrictive adjective : “that” ● Clause 2: I experienced a peace of mind that I have never had before - Independent clause: “I experienced a peace of mind” - Restrictive adjective clause: “that I have never had before” The second clause which contains a relative clause is connected with the first clause by the conjunction “and” to make a compound – complex sentence  Suggested translation : things we desire (P57) ● Clause 1: We can begin to listen to people who are doing the things we desire - Independent clause: “We can begin to listen to people” - Restrictive adjective clause: “ who are doing the things we desire” ● Clause 2: we can model our behaviors after those people who have the things we desire - Independent clause: “we can model our behaviors after those people ” - Restrictive adjective clause: “who have the things we desire” The second clause which contains a relative clause is connected with the first clause by the conjunction “and” to make a compound – complex sentence  Suggested translation : Chúng ta bắt đầu lắng nghe người làm điều mong muốn bắt chước cách xử lý theo người có điều mong muốn 4.2.5 Dummy Subject Sometimes we need to use dummy subject when there is no subject attached to the verb and where the real subject is somewhere else in the clause Example 1: Student: Ta Thi Truc Linh Class: K23NAB5 Code:23203112462 Graduation Paper 63 Supervisor: Vo Thi Thanh Tam It is in our human nature to be able to those things that create an amazing life.(P35) In sentence, “It” is a dummy subject It replaces for the real subject “ our human nature to be able to those things”  Suggested translation : Bản chất người làm điều điều tạo sống tuyệt vời 4.2.6 Sentence in Passive Voice The passive voice is used when we want to emphasize the action (the verb) and the object of a sentence rather than subject This means that the subject is either less important than the action itself or that we don't know who or what the subject is Form of Passive Voice: SUBJECT + TO BE + PAST PARTICIPLE Example 1: These two thoughts are balanced on the ends of a teeter-totter.(P43) In the sentence, I still used the subject of passive structure “These two thoughts” and used “được” to express the passive meaning Then I took the passive verb “are balanced”  Suggested translation : Hai suy nghĩ cân hai đầu bập bênh Example 2: This part of our mind is not limited by the three dimensions of space: height, width, and depth or the fourth dimension: time (P74) In the sentence, I still used the subject of passive structure “This part of our mind ” and difficult issues was determining which meanings of words and phrases to use in a given context If I didn't use the strict sense of the word during the translation process, the meaning of the sentence would obviously change So, I had to read extensively on the subject Then, I should find out and se information from the internet as well as a variety of dictionaries in order to translate words with the right and exact context Besides, I also had to settle a lot of idioms and ambiguous structures As a result, analyzing and translating such complicated pieces will be much simpler and clear for me Secondly, there's the systemic problem, which is also a thorny issue This text contains many complicated structures and phrases that are difficult or even obscure to analyse in this text It made me really upset because couldn't figure out what the text meant exactly So I sought guidance from my supervisor and my friends in order to gain a better understanding and translation Thirdly, the structure and use of words in English and Vietnamese are entirely different So, in order to accurately communicate the details of the original text to the reader, I need to understand and interpret the meaning in order to fit the Vietnamese writing style Finally, I store my mind in order to broaden my public knowledge based on my limited experience In the period of executing this thesis, there were many times I was confused and wasted a lot of time because of some American cultural and religious vocabulary In short, to avoid making the same mistakes and improve the quality of my similar Also, I always ask my friends and even my family members if they can understand my version This is really a good way I can improve the quality of my paper Finally, there are some phrases I can't determine the meaning of words so I have to researched on some webs and I found information Although, I used many different dictionaries such as Oxford Advanced, Free dictionary, Glosbe Dictionary, foreign language-related organizations and companies to create conditions for students to get acquainted and practice with translation while studing at school The second, the Faculty of English should organize weekly as well as monthly student meetings so that students can exchange methods to well in this Faculty and come up with problems, solutions In addition, Duy Tan University should also invite more foreign teachers to teach at the English Department because this gives students more opportunities to practice and improve their pronunciation Especially, some subjects are the foundation of translation and interpretation I think, the school can arrange the curriculum to get students acquainted from the second year to the last year to make this skill more professional Another thing is that the Faculty should plan the internship earlier as the second year or the third year so that students can go for internships so that students have the opportunity to gain more experience Finally,
