232003110336 GRADUATION THESIS 50 Supervisor: Vo Thi Phuong Thao, M.A [1] a substance that things can be made from [2] things that are needed in order to a particular activity [3] information or ideas used in books, etc [4] cloth used for making clothes, curtains, etc [5] tems used in a performance [6] a person with particular qualities or suitable for a particular opportunity In Lac Viet dictionary, it means [7]“hữu hình, cụ thể, vật chất, khơng cao thượng, quan trọng” Although the word "material" has many different meanings, it based on the context of the passage I think that the meaning "vật chất" is the most appropriate Therefore, my suggested version is: “Thành công mặt vật chất khiến bạn hạnh phúc bạn hạnh phúc” For example 10: “The secret of getting what you want and wanting what you have is first to learn how to be happy, loving, confident, and peaceful regardless of outer conditioning.” (P76) In Oxford Learner’s Dictionary, this word has many meanings as follows: [1] known about by only a few people; kept hidden from others [2] used to describe actions and behaviour that you not tell other people about [3] liking to have secrets that other people not know about; showing this In Lac Viet dictionary, it has a lot of meanings “bí mật, kín đáo, giấu kín”, but in this case, to make the sentence is easy for readers to understand, I chose the meaning of "bí quyết" to complete the sentence Student: Le Thi Bao Hy Code: 232003110336 GRADUATION THESIS 51 Supervisor: Vo Thi Phuong Thao, M.A I have suggested version: “Bí để có bạn muốn mong muốn bạn có trước tiên học cách hạnh phúc, yêu đời, tự tin bình yên bất chấp điều kiện bên ngoài” For example 11: “As the world becomes a smaller place, we have the opportunity to experience firsthand the goodness in various people of different faiths.” (P34) In Oxford Learner’s Dictionary, this word means: [1] obtained or experienced yourself In dictionary.com, it has many meanings as follows: [2] from the first or original source [3] of or relating to the first or original source [4] direct from the original source In Lac Viet dictionary, it means “tận mắt, ưu tú, sáng lập” Based on the above context, I think the meaning of "tận mắt" is quite appropriate I have a suggested version: “Khi giới trở nên nhỏ bé hơn, có hội tận mắt trải nghiệm lòng tốt nơi người khác thuộc tín ngưỡng khác nhau.” 4.1.3 Specialized Words/Terms For example 12: “The algebra student will always depend on basic "concrete thinking" math skills to progress.” In Cambridge dictionary, it means: [1] thinking focused on immediate experiences and specific objects or events In The Free dictionary, it has a lot of meaning as follow: [2] thinking of objects or ideas as specific items rather than as an abstract representation of a more general concept, as contrasted with abstract thinking Student: Le Thi Bao Hy Code: 232003110336 GRADUATION THESIS 52 Supervisor: Vo Thi Phuong Thao, M.A [3] reflects experience, rather than abstraction, typical of those who are unable to generalize In Lac Viet dictionary, it has the meaning “suy nghĩ cụ thể” After referencing from many different dictionaries, "concrete thinking" has many different meanings After much thought, I finally feel that "tư cụ thể" is quite appropriate in this context Hence, my suggested version is: “Sinh viên đại số ln phụ thuộc vào kỹ tốn học "tư cụ thể" để tiến bộ.” 4.2 STRUCTURE The same as lexical analysis, grammar also plays an important role in sentences To be able to master the grammar, not only must you understand each sentence clearly, but you also have to practice a lot to master it When you have a strong grammar foundation, you will be able to handle all the structure in the text, help readers understand the full meaning of a sentence, and improve your communication skills in both spoken and written English I have selected some basic grammar structures included in my graduate paper to analyze, and indeed, I have expanded my knowledge a lot 4.2.1 Simple Sentences A simple sentence is a sentence that consists of just one independent clause A simple sentence has no dependent clauses (An independent clause (unlike a dependent clause) can stand alone as a sentence.) For example 13: “The common sense of one generation was always a new discovery to previous generations.” (P26) The common sense of one generation: Subject Was: Verb a new discovery to previous generations: C So this is a simple sentence Student: Le Thi Bao Hy Code: 232003110336 GRADUATION THESIS 53 Supervisor: Vo Thi Phuong Thao, M.A And our sugguested version: “Ý thức chung hệ khám phá hệ trước.” For example 14: “To find true and lasting happiness, we must make a small but very significant shift in our thinking” (P94) We: Subject Must make: Verb a small but very significant shift in our thinking: Object The Vietnamese version of this sentence is: “Để tìm thấy hạnh phúc đích thực lâu dài, phải thực thay đổi nhỏ quan trọng suy nghĩ mình” For example 15: “He was perceived as a threat by the church and imprisoned in his home for the rest of his life.” (P16, S2) This sentence is in the passive voice He: Subject Was perceived/ imprisoned : Verbs in passive voice a threat: Object by the church: by agent in his home for the rest of his life: Adv It means: “Ông bị nhà thờ coi mối đe dọa bị giam cầm nhà cuối đời.” 4.2.2 Compound Sentences A compound sentence is a sentence that has at least two independent clauses joined by a comma, semicolon or conjunction An independent clause is a clause that has a subject and verb and forms a complete thought The coordinators are as follows: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so (The first letter of each of the coordinator spells FANBOYS) Except for very short sentences, coordinators are always preceded by a comma Student: Le Thi Bao Hy Code: 232003110336 54 GRADUATION THESIS Supervisor: Vo Thi Phuong Thao, M.A For example 16: “Many people have achieved a lot in their lives, but they lack peace.” (P49) Independent Many people have achieved a lot in their lives clause S V but Coordinator O A they lack peace  Independent clause S V O This is a compound sentence, and two clauses are linked together by a coordinating conjunction “but” My suggested version: “Nhiều người đạt nhiều thành tựu sống, họ lại thiếu bình yên” For example 17: “The difference between now and then is like night and day, and even then the results were impressive The difference between now and then is like night and day S V A Independent clause and even then the results were impressive Coordinator independent adverb S V C  Independent clause This is a compound sentence, and two clauses are linked together by a coordinating conjunction “AND” My suggested version: “Sự khác biệt sau giống đêm ngày, chí sau kết ấn tượng.” 4.2.3 Complex Sentences Student: Le Thi Bao Hy Code: 232003110336 GRADUATION THESIS 55 Supervisor: Vo Thi Phuong Thao, M.A A complex sentence is a sentence that contains an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses An independent clause can stand alone as a sentence, but a dependent clause even though it has a subject and a verb cannot stand alone 4.2.3.1 Complex Sentences With Adverbial Clauses Adverbial clauses are dependent clauses that modify or give more information about a verb in the independent clause Complex Sentences With Conditional Clauses Conditional sentences consist of a main clause and a conditional clause (sometimes called an if-clause) The conditional clause usually begins with if or unless The conditional clause can come before or after the main clause Conditional Usage sentence type Zero General truths If clause Main clause verb verb tense If + S + tense V(s,es), S+ V(s,es) A possible Type condition and If + S + S + Will/Can/shall… its probable V(s,es), + Vo If + S + V2/ S +would/ Could/ Ved, Should…+ Vo result A hypothetical Type Type condition and its probable Be => V2 result An unreal past If + S + Had S + would/ could…+ condition and + V3/Ved, have + V3/Ved Student: Le Thi Bao Hy Code: 232003110336 GRADUATION THESIS 56 Supervisor: Vo Thi Phuong Thao, M.A its probable result in the Mixed type past An unreal past If + S + had + condition and V3/Ved, S + would + Vo its probable result in the present For Example 18: “If you move around a little and stir things up, you will begin to feel waves of warmth again.” (P100) This type conditional sentence has the structure as follows: If + S + V(s/es), S + Will/Can/Shall + Vo If clause: If you move around a little and stir things up Main clause: you will begin to feel waves of warmth again My suggested version: “Nếu bạn di chuyển xung quanh chút khuấy động thứ, bạn bắt đầu cảm thấy sóng ấm áp trở lại”  Complex Sentences With Adverbial Clauses Of concession For example 19: “Although your senses register the movement, your mind knows that the sun is not moving.” Although your senses register the movement: independent clause your mind knows that the sun is not moving.: Supervisor: Vo Thi Phuong Thao, M.A our interactions will bring you waves of love and peace: Independent clause When you are lying in a bath of love and peace: Independent clause: When: Conjunction My suggested version: “Khi bạn nằm bồn tắm tình u hịa bình, tương tác bạn mang đến cho bạn sóng u thương bình n.”  Complex Sentences With Noun Clauses A noun clause is a dependent clause that acts as a noun It can be used as the subject, direct object, indirect object, object of a preposition, subject complement, or appositive For example 21: “Just fifty years ago, the theme of the women's movement was that we are all equal because we are the same” In this sentence, we can see the clause “that we are all equal because we are the same.” is a noun clause and functions as an Complement of the có nhiều anh” Student: Le Thi Bao Hy Code: 232003110336 58 GRADUATION THESIS Supervisor: Vo Thi Phuong Thao, M.A 4.2.4 Compound-Complex Sentences A compound-complex sentence has two or more independent clause(s) and at least one dependent clause  Simply put, it is a combination of a compound and complex sentence  This sentence type can be a bit confusing to identify since compoundcomplex sentences are pretty long However, this type of sentence gives writers many ways to create sentences For example 23: “He realized that he had never really cared that much about money, and that's why he didn't have much.” He realized that he had never really cared that much about money S V O (Noun clause) Independent clause and Coordinator that's why he didn't have much SV C Independent clause This is a compound-complex sentence and two clauses are linked together by a coordinating conjunction “and” I have suggested version: “Anh nhận anh chưa thực quan tâm nhiều đến tiền bạc, lý anh khơng có nhiều” Student: Le Thi Bao Hy Code: 232003110336 GRADUATION THESIS 59 Supervisor: Vo Thi Phuong Thao, M.A CHAPTER V DIFFICULTIES AND SOLUTIONS 5.1 DIFFICULTIES This graduate paper is the best choice for us to practice our skills and practice what we have learned to translate a text over the past years We have learned many skills related to text translation Moreover, analysis is a great opportunity for us to improve our capabilities and skills and seek deeper into modern and postmodern education Besides, the teachers of Duy Tan University have created me more useful experiences to improve my knowledge However, on the other hand, there are still many difficulties that we face in the analysis process During the translation and analysis process, the translation requires extensive knowledge, so there is still some knowledge about mentality that makes me squirm I couldn't understand it correctly and found the right meaning so I couldn't give the best translation from English to Vietnamese, as follows: First, it is not easy to find a suitable meaning in any dictionary even though I have read through its definition In addition, a word can have many meanings, so if we want to have a suitable meaning, we must rely on the context of the translation Second, the structure is also a factor that gets us into trouble again sometimes we still make some common mistakes that we never seem to make if we use it incorrectly, its meaning will be incorrect with the original song In the end, the difficulty is something all translators have to go through but don't be discouraged, let's think of it as our chance to find out where we went wrong and fix it Student: Le Thi Bao Hy Code: 232003110336 GRADUATION THESIS 60 Supervisor: Vo Thi Phuong Thao, M.A 5.2 SOLUTIONS In the process of translating the graduation paper, we overcame many difficulties and challenges Now we would like to give some solutions to help me complete my graduation First of all, we refer to some good graduation papers in the library and the direction of our faculty to master the process and how to it Then we read through the chapter to understand its general content The next step is the first draft translation This is the time to dig deeper into vocabulary as well as structure For vocabulary, we can find out its meaning from many different dictionaries or even on the internet for the most appropriate meaning Besides, reading several documents or working with the same style is useful for learning more about words in depth On the other hand, we should consult many different dictionaries like Oxford dictionaries, words Lac Vietnamese dictionary, English-English-Vietnamese dictionary , Internet, books, newspapers to translate some difficult words to choose a suitable meaning However, some words are not available in them; that we have to reconsider the context of the text Furthermore, we can consult with our instructor or friends to get their opinion or advice This is a lot better than our version For the structure, the first thing we need to is to carefully analyze each sentence to determine the subject, the main verb as well as other components, Although the author does not use too much-complicated grammar in the book, we can still make mistakes More importantly, when translating, we should keep the structure of Vietnamese and consider English as a reference Besides, on the internet there are a number of websites to refer to, let's try to check that the structure is correct or not and it is appropriate Student: Le Thi Bao Hy Code: 232003110336 GRADUATION THESIS 61 Supervisor: Vo Thi Phuong Thao, M.A CHAPTER VI CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTIONS 6.1 CONCLUSION In general, translation enhances understanding, visionary, as well as raising awareness about socio-cultural, professional communication activities, etc There has been a lot of pressure and stress as a translator because translators have always had difficulty translating the vocabulary, specialized structure of a creative translation work and good reflexes It is very important that he / she has some solid knowledge of different fields in order to be able to fluently translate different types of documents Through that, after many hardships and trials, myself have been greatly expanded to expand my own understanding With soft skills, countless new ants have been cultivated to become future items The graduation paper has given me more priceless things than I thought I discovered the connotation in the source language and did my best to create the same meaning in the target language using equivalent words and structures Thanks to the book I translated, I can release all my grudges, and my soul is now free I hope that my translation will be useful to anyone who is and will need them 6.2 SUGGESTIONS After I finished my graduation, I would like to contribute some my recommendation to the Faculty of Foreign Languages I hope that my ideas will be useful for the university and students will need First of all, the foreign language subject should create favorable conditions for students to practice their skills and improve their language Student: Le Thi Bao Hy Code: 232003110336 GRADUATION THESIS 62 Supervisor: Vo Thi Phuong Thao, M.A level For example, the department should open more classes and clubs, or Extracurricular sessions on translation skills so that students can improve their reflexes and confidence Second, the student's weakness is that the vocabulary is limited or knows a lot but it is not used often, leading to forgetting the meaning Besides, teachers should assign more homework so that students can approach the structure deeply and increase pressure on them to practice most effectively Especially the main subjects such as translation theory, translation and 2, syntax, writing and speaking need attention and daily test through small test, because those subjects are very important and necessary for graduation work Third, students should also focus on their native language, through reading specialized books in the school library So that they can properly translate the author's intent and sentence words smoothly from English to Vietnamese text Finally, due to the limited time doing the graduation exam, along with graduation exam, output english and information technology, I think the foreign language department should give students more time to spend achieve the most complete results Student: Le Thi Bao Hy Code: 232003110336 GRADUATION THESIS Supervisor: Vo Thi Phuong Thao, M.A REFERENCES
