students of Faculty of English at Duy Tan University, I have given opportunities to approach and understand many types of interpreters related to several disciplines However, translating a book related to a novel was the most interesting to me Besides, the number of people pursuing the translation industry is quite large nowadays Translation is a difficult industry that requires good foreign language skills and a lot of vocabulary Getting a complete Vietnamese translation is not easy In fact, book readers increase each day that the quality of the novel is increasingly confirmed Every year, novels are published around the world A novel was chosen for translation because the translator was interested in the text as well as wanted to know the language style in the English novel Moreover, knowing how to overcome the idiom or slang words transition from English to Vietnamese without changing the message of the text is also considered to be the reason in choosing it I think it was extremely helpful to choose this book for translation in order for me to better understand all aspects of my social life Hopefully when translating this book, readers may be impressed that this novel is illegal, combined social commentary - the absurdity of the law as applied to children of unmarried parents - with a densely plotted revenge thriller In short, I hope that AN ANALYSIS OF THE twenty” Semicolon: “;” My suggested version: “Anh ta bỏ cậu bé mười bảy tuổi lạc hậu; trả lại niên đôi mươi.” 4.2.3 Complex Sentences A complex sentence, in grammar, is a sentence with one independent clause and at least one dependent clause A complex sentence contains one independent clause and one (or more) dependent clause It is like a mother with one or more children depending on her In a complex sentence, one idea is generally more important than the other one The more important idea is placed in the independent clause, and the less important idea in the dependent clause 4.2.3.1 Complex Sentences with Noun Clause Translating sentences containing noun clause is a hard problem Noun clauses often make us misunderstand the meaning of a sentence if we wrongly define a noun clause and its function While translating this novel, I encountered many difficulties Here are some example about the noun clause and my suggested versions Example 1: “Shrinking, naturally, from allowing her husband to be annoyed, and probably cheated as well, by any person who claimed, however preposterously, a family connection with herself, it had been her practice, for many years past, to assist the captain from her own purse, on the condition that he should never come near the house, and that he should not presume to make any application whatever to Mr Vanstone.” [Page 18, paragraph 11] There were two noun clauses in this sentence: Student: Pham Thi Lan Anh Code: K23.701 GRADUATION PAPER 58 Supervisor: Le Thi Dieu Huong, M.A Noun clause 1: “That he should never come near the house” Noun clause 2: “That he should not presume to make any application whatever to Mr Vanstone” Above two noun clauses all functioned as objects modifying the verb “assist” My suggested version: “Rút lại, cách tự nhiên, khơng để chồng khó chịu, có lẽ bị lừa nữa, người tuyên bố, cho dù phi lý, mối quan hệ gia đình thân cơ, nhiều năm qua, cô thực để giúp đỡ người thuyền trưởng từ túi tiền riêng cơ, với điều kiện không đến gần nhà, không nên đưa đơn xin việc cho ơng Vanstone.” Example 2: “Readily admitting the imprudence of this course, Mrs Vanstone further explained that she had perhaps been the more inclined to adopt it through having been always accustomed, in her early days, to see the captain living now upon one member, and now upon another, of her mother’s family.” [Page 19, paragraph 12] There were a noun clauses in this sentence: Noun clause: “That she had perhaps been the more inclined to adopt it through having been always accustomed, in her early days, to see the captain living now upon one member, and now upon another, of her mother’s family” Noun clause role as objects that modify the verb “explain” in the context My suggested version: “Dễ dàng thừa nhận thiếu thận trọng lần này, bà Vanstone giải thích thêm bà có lẽ có xu hướng chấp nhận q quen thuộc với bà, ngày mình, Student: Pham Thi Lan Anh Code: K23.701 GRADUATION PAPER 59 Supervisor: Le Thi Dieu Huong, M.A nhìn thấy thuyền trưởng sống với thành viên, thành viên khác, gia đình mẹ cơ.” 4.2.3.2 Complex Sentences with Adjective Clause (or Relative Clause) A relative clause is a dependent clause that functions as an adjective so relative clauses are also called adjective clauses A relative clause is started with a relative pronoun such as who, whose, whom, which, what, that, where, when Example 1: “He had married a poor ignorant woman, who had served as a waitress at some low eating-house, who had unexpectedly come into a little money, and whose small inheritance he had mercilessly squandered to the last farthing.” [Page 20, paragraph 12] In this situation, the underlined relative clause was a complement that modified the noun “woman” My suggested version: “Anh ta kết hôn với người phụ nữ nghèo, ngu dốt, làm hầu bàn nhà ăn hèn mọn, ngờ kiếm tiền, phần thừa kế nhỏ nhoi mà phung phí cách không thương tiếc phút cuối cùng.” Example 2: “After a few minutes, the figure of a gentleman became visible, at the point where the shrubbery path joined the winding garden-walk which led to the house.” [Page 30, paragraph 28] In this situation, it could be easily seen that the marked relative clause played the role as a object of preposition at that modified the noun “point” My suggested version: “Sau vài phút, bóng dáng người đàn ông lịch lãm điểm nơi đường đầy bụi nối với lối dạo vườn quanh co dẫn đến nhà.” Student: Pham Thi Lan Anh Code: K23.701 GRADUATION PAPER 60 Supervisor: Le Thi Dieu Huong, M.A Example 3: “A civil engineer in the north of England, who owed certain obligations to Mr Vanstone, expressed his willingness to take Frank under superintendence, on terms of the most favorable kind.” [Page 37, paragraph 34] In this situation, the underlined relative clause was a complement that modified the subject “a civil engineer” My suggested version: “Một kỹ sư xây dựng miền bắc nước Anh, người có số nghĩa vụ định với ơng Vanstone, bày tỏ sẵn sàng nhận Frank quyền giám sát, với điều kiện có lợi nhất.” Example 5: “The small regular features, which he was supposed to have inherited from his mother, were rounded and filled out, without having lost their remarkable delicacy of form.” [Page 44, paragraph 49] The marked relative clause played the role as a complement that modified the subject “features” My suggested version: “Những đường nét nhỏ đặn, cho thừa hưởng từ mẹ mình, làm trịn đầy đặn, mà không làm vẻ tinh tế đáng ý hình thức.” 4.2.3.3 Complex Sentences with Adverbial Clause A dependent clause introduced by an adverbial subordinator is known as an adverbial clause It notifies readers about the time, place, reason, purpose, and result Example 1: “When the boys went to school, Mr Clare said “good-bye” to them and “thank God” to himself.” [Page 31, paragraph 30] Student: Pham Thi Lan Anh Code: K23.701 GRADUATION PAPER 61 Supervisor: Le Thi Dieu Huong, M.A The adverbial clause in this sentence began with subordinating conjunction “when” and modified the meaning of time My suggested version: “Khi cậu bé đến trường, ông Clare nói “tạm biệt” với họ “cảm ơn Chúa” với mình.” Example 2: “If I had any capital to give them, I should make Frank a butcher, Cecil a baker and Arthur a grocer - those being the only human vocations I know of which are certain to be always in request.” [Page 34, paragraph 32] Starting with subordinate conjunction “If”, the adverbial clause in this sentence modified the meaning of condition My suggested version: “Nếu có nguồn vốn để đưa cho chúng, nên cho Frank trở thành người hàng thịt, Cecil làm thợ bánh Arthur làm người bán tạp hóa - nghề nghiệp người mà biết chắn cần.” Example 3: “On these occasions, Mr Clare used sometimes to walk across from his cottage (in his dressing-gown and slippers), and look at the boys disparagingly, through the window or over the fence as if they were three wild animals whom his neighbor was attempting to tame.” [Page 36, paragraph 33] In this situation, the underlined adverbial clause at the end of a sentence starting with subordinator conjunction “as if” modified the meaning of assumption My suggested version: “Vào dịp này, ông Clare ngang qua nhà (trong áo khốc ngồi dép lê), Student: Pham Thi Lan Anh Code: K23.701 GRADUATION PAPER 62 Supervisor: Le Thi Dieu Huong, M.A nhìn cậu bé cách miệt thị, qua cửa sổ hàng rào thể chúng ba vật hoang dã hàng xóm ơng cố gắng để hóa.” Example 4: “In later years, when Frank had reached the age of seventeen, the same curious shifting of the relative positions of parent and friend between the two neighbors was exemplified more absurdly than ever.” [Page 36, paragraph 34] The underlined adverbial clause started with the subordinating conjunction “when” and modified the meaning of time for the sentence My suggested version: “Trong năm sau, Frank tròn mười bảy tuổi, thay đổi vị trí tương đối cha mẹ bạn bè hai người hàng xóm minh chứng cách phi lý hết.” Example 5: “It was not wonderful that Magdalen should have failed to recognize him when he first appeared in view.” [Page 44, paragraph 49] In this case, the marked adverbial clause starting with “when” modified the meaning of time for this sentence My suggested version: “Khơng có tuyệt vời Magdalen không nên nhận lúc xuất lần đầu tiên.” 4.2.4 Sentences with Empty Subjects A complete sentence must be composed by a subject and at least a verb English clauses which are not imperatives must have a subject Sometimes we need to use a “dummy” or “empty” or “artificial” subject when there is no subject attached to the verb, and subject or the subject is too long, so we used empty subject “it” to replace Empty Subject is one of the sentence elements is not existed in the Vietnamese, so translating this kind of sentence from English into Vietnamese is a difficult task So, to have a good suggested version, we must not only understand the meaning of the sentence but also know how to naturally translate it into TL Example 1: “Without touching on those affairs, which it was neither desirable nor necessary to do, Mrs Vanstone then proceeded to say that she would at once set all Miss Garth’s doubts at rest, so far as they related to herself, by one plain acknowledgment.” [Page 22, paragraph 17] This sentence has an empty subject “it” but its real subject is “Mrs Vanstone then proceeded to say that she would at once set all Miss Garth’s doubts at rest, so far as they related to herself, by one plain acknowledgment” However, as I said before, in Vietnam, this structure doesn’t exist Thus, to translate this kind of sentence, we must get the main idea, then transfer this meaning by the free way that is suitable to the Vietnamese culture and style My suggested version: “Không đề cập đến vấn đề đó, điều mà khơng mong muốn khơng cần thiết phải làm, bà Vanstone sau tiếp tục nói bà đặt nghi ngờ Garth phần cịn lại, chúng liên quan đến thân cô, thừa nhận rõ ràng.” Example 2: “Ere long, however, there rose obscurely on her mind a doubt which perplexed and distressed her.” [Page 25, paragraph 20] Student: Pham Thi Lan Anh Code: K23.701 GRADUATION PAPER 64 Supervisor: Le Thi Dieu Huong, M.A This sentence is created by an empty subject structure, and in Vietnamese, there is no kind of form so translating this sentence is a difficult work Thus, to translate this kind of sentence, we must get the main idea, then transfer this meaning by the free way that is suitable to the Vietnamese culture and style My suggested version: “Tuy nhiên, lâu rồi, tâm trí cô dấy lên nghi ngờ khiến cô bối rối đau khổ.” Example 3: “It was not wonderful that Magdalen should have failed to recognize him when he first appeared in view.” [Page 44, paragraph 49] In this situation, “it” was a fake subject The real subject was “Magdalen should have failed to recognize him when he first appeared in view” In order to make the sentence’s meaning adapt to the Vietnamese style, I decided to change a little bit in words’ order when translating My suggested version: “Không có tuyệt vời Magdalen khơng nên nhận lúc xuất lần đầu tiên.” CHAPTER 5: DIFFICULTIES AND SOLUTIONS 5.1 Difficulties During the whole study process at Faculty of English – Duy Tan University, I have been highly trained in translation through classroom lessons and useful practical exercises Now, I have a thorough understanding Student: Pham Thi Lan Anh Code: K23.701 GRADUATION PAPER 65 Supervisor: Le Thi Dieu Huong, M.A of the essential knowledge and cultivate more knowledge; however, it is inevitable that I made some mistakes when implementing this project Translation requires not only high accuracy but also high consistency in terms of content, style, words and expressions, as well as a broad cultural understanding of the translator Translation is a difficult profession that requires extensive vocabulary and good foreign language skills Hence, accurately translating a text from English into Vietnamese is a great challenge Firstly, terms of vocabulary, there are a lot of vocabularies that have no approximate meaning in the dictionaries, so it took me much time to look up, read on the Internet and find documents so that I could find a suitable and correct meaning In the translation process, if I did not use the right meaning of the words, the sentence’s meaning would change dramatically Besides, I also had to deal with a lot of challenging idioms and expressions What made them difficult was that they were formed by very familiar words, but their real meanings were completely different Secondly, many sentence structures are very complicated In fact, complicated grammatical structures were the factors causing huge influences on my rendering process There are many structures that are very common in English but not or hardly applied in Vietnamese, for example empty subject structure In spite of an English majored student, some complex sentences or compound-complex sentences also made me confused, so I found it difficult to analyze them clearly In addition, in all kinds of structures, sentences have loads of different types of clauses including relation clauses, noun clauses and adverb clauses that are really complicated Student: Pham Thi Lan Anh Code: K23.701 GRADUATION PAPER 66 Supervisor: Le Thi Dieu Huong, M.A Finally, it is surely true that it is uneasy to translate a successful text To avoid making the same mistakes and improve the quality of my similar projects in the future, vocabulary, structures and general knowledge are three main points that I should stay focused on 5.2 Solutions Many people think that the translation is an easy thing and all you have to is transferring words from the source text into the equivalent words of a target text However, I think that it is a very complicated process in which I have to consider many factors In this part, I would like to share some helpful solutions that I used to deal with the mentioned obstacles Firstly, I did was to improve my vocabulary capacity so that I would have a better ability of word usage, especially in a colorful and diverse language like Vietnamese During this translating process, I marked and noted the words and phrases that I feel hard to convert In the translation process, I used many kinds of dictionary, such as: English - Vietnamese dictionary of Linguistic Institute, The Free Dictionary, Cambridge Dictionary, Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, Lingoes Essential Dictionary, etc… and to find out the most suitable meaning with the context Secondly, reviewing learned grammar structures was another good solution for me The lack of consolidating those structures sometimes led me to embroilment; as a result, a lot of time was wasted unnecessarily If I were not sure about my version, I would ask my supervisor or my friend to get some advice Furthermore, I also studied the graduation papers of the predecessors with the aim of learning and inheriting their ways of translation, analysis and presentation From my personal perspective, this is one of the most useful methods which I applied in this paper Student: Pham Thi Lan Anh Code: K23.701 GRADUATION PAPER 67 Supervisor: Le Thi Dieu Huong, M.A Next, I improved my general knowledge by reading articles, stories and book that were related to essential characters or events in my translation Finally, in terms of translation, meeting the challenges is inevitable I also had a lot of difficulties when translating this text However, I tried my best to find out the way to resolve and give the best suggested version CHAPTER 6: CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTIONS 6.1 Summary of Findings In the process of completing my graduation paper, I gained both a lot of precious experience as well as the recognition that I still have many shortcomings which should be improved The first thing this paper helped me raise my ability in analysis and expressions During the process of translating, I discovered that my vocabulary was poor, there were serveral words that I did not know the meaning of them, which made its difficult for me to translate Furthermore, the lack of Vietnamese vocabulary is also ungainly when expressing an idea Student: Pham Thi Lan Anh Code: K23.701 GRADUATION PAPER 68 Supervisor: Le Thi Dieu Huong, M.A into Vietnamese; therefore, improving vocabulary is actual important and necessary Secondly, implementing this big task provided me the chance to review my translating skills and my grammar knowledge There are many new words in this text which I cannot determine the suitable meaning with the context and some structures in this chapter are very difficult such as the complex sentences or compound - complex sentences On the other hand, this novel has expanded my knowledge and opened my mind It brings a different point of view to marriage and gender inequality within Victorian society Though translation was my major, translating was never be easy for me In addition to the difficulties which had been mentioned above, a translator always had to be careful Finally, I think that I need practice translating more and more in different fields to have more experiences as well as skills to become a good translator There might be many drawbacks in my paper but I hope all of my effort would be recognized and appreciated by the teachers as well as the readers 6.2 Suggestions An essential measure for translators is working more, and translating more materials or documents To achieve today's knowledge and skills, I cannot help but mention the contribution of the teachers from Duy Tan University, especially Faculty of English Firstly, like other students, I hope the school will sponsor the Faculty of English in terms of funding which organizes many exchanges between students and businesses (resorts, companies, so on), the school will hold many meetings and exchange students from other schools Student: Pham Thi Lan Anh Code: students so that they can practice skills, strengthen the knowledge and improve their translating ability Thirdly, in my opinion, teachers should give students specific terms in many fields of the life To translate a specific document, the specific terms are very important If the students don’t know about those, they are very easy to face up with difficulties Finally, I hope that all of my
