Thesis CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION 1.1 RATIONALE Being an English major student, I always realize that nowadays, the need of interpretation and translation is getting more and more numerous I think that translation is the best way to transfer what we want to know another country all over the world Besides, educating children plays an important roles in forming and developing human personality because family is place that has a direct impact on their children Therefore; this book can provide lots of essential information for parents and students But, first of all, we should find out clearly more about buddism I hope that with all my knowledge and skills and all researches I have found can complete translation perfectly 1.2 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES 1.2.1 Aims - To present my ability in translating and analyzing a document - To gain knowledge such as grammar, vocabulary, etc 1.2.2 Objectives - To develop awareness of current issues in translating studies - To analyze complicated words, phrases, idioms, and contexts, etc - To sum up knowledge I learned in the past 1.3 THE SCOPE OF THE STUDY There are a lot of sectors of the book to study such as influences of heredity, pure love, train children to tell the truth, teach your children to be humble, etc However, within the scope of the paper and due to time limitation, I can only focus on the chapter The paper will also show and analyze the difficulties with which I met when translating, for example tourism terms, the way to use English grammar and syntactic structures as well as word’s semantics in Buddhism 1.3.1 THE TEXT FEATURES Supervisor: Huynh Vu Chi Tam Student: Đỗ Thanh Tuyền Faculty of English Page Graduation Thesis The book “Love your children the right way” is written by PANYANANDA BHIKKHU Therefore, the book is very useful for translators and interpretations or all those interested in translation This book shows us lots of knowledge about effective translation management and group behavioral psychology It also shows us lots of ways to teach children So, this is an useful book for anyone and bring the best experience to parents Moreover, it helps people to deeply understand the translation in general and operate interpretation in particular 1.3.2 THE TEXT LENGTH The book “Love your children the right way” includes 224 pages 1.3.3 THE TEXT ORGANIZATION There are chapters in this book and I choose the text belonging to chapter of the book The text is separated into lots of different sections and it is arranged as follows: Chapter 3: Cultivating unity among your children is very important Train your children to save money at the young age Train children to have gratitude at the young age Train your children to forgive Train children to depend on and help oneself, etc 1.3.4 THE TEXT SOURCE This text comes from the book “LOVE YOUR CHILDREN THE RIGHT WAY” This book is written by PANYANANDA BHIKKHU This book is available on the internet and is easily accessible for reading and reference 1.4 Methods of the Study 1.4.1 Translating Methods Reading several documents related to the source language text’s topic to get some basic knowledge and specific terms Supervisor: Huynh Vu Chi Tam Student: Đỗ Thanh Tuyền Faculty of English Page Graduation Thesis Reading the whole text to get the main content Identifying and marking specific vocabulary and complicated grammatical structures Analyzing sentence structure Rendering the source language text and concentrating on terms and structures that had been marked Looking up in dictionaries and searching on the Internet to get the most suitable meanings for difficult words Checking the target language text at least twice 1.4.2 Analyzing Methods Reviewing the grammatical theory Analyzing grammatical structures and identifying the sentence’s components Finalizing the study Supervisor: Huynh Vu Chi Tam Student: Đỗ Thanh Tuyền Faculty of English Page 33 realizing their role and that behaviour has become exam-ple for their children to follow So I would like to remind all the parents that you are the teachers of your children long before any other teach-ers When you are the teachers you must be aware of your responsibility [24] One more thing you need to understand in training your children, i.e., not make things hard for the children by making them fun as well and for them to receive lessons about life at the same time without them even realizing it Do not force them to Graduation Thesis huấn luyện cái, đừng làm khó chúng cách làm cho chúng vui để chúng nhận học sống mà chúng Đừng ép chúng làm trẻ khơng phải quân nhân, sau ăn cơm xong bảo lên giảng đường tập huấn Cuộc huấn luyện căng thẳng đến mức hầu hết binh sĩ ngủ quên Kiểu đào tạo khơng có giá trị trẻ em Chúng ta nên dạy chúng thể trò chuyện với chúng, điều gây thích thú chúng Đây cách tốt khác để giúp đỡ bọn trẻ anything because children are not soldiers, who after meals, will be told to go to the auditorium for a training session The training is so intense that most soldiers fall asleep That kind of training is of little value to the children We should teach them like we are having a conversation with them, which will be enjoya-ble to them as well This is another good way to help the children Supervisor: Huynh Vu Chi Tam Student: Đỗ Thanh Tuyền Faculty of English Supervisor: Huynh Vu Chi Tam Page 34 Graduation Thesis Student: Đỗ Thanh Tuyền Faculty of English Page 35 Graduation Thesis CHAPTER : ANALYSIS 2.1 VOCABULARY During the translating process, I found the text have so many difficult words which I not know before It is not easy for me to look up them in dictionary sources Thus, in some cases, I chose forms of the most suitable translating based on the context 2.1.1 Words with multi-meaning Multi-meaning words are words that have more than one meaning in the dictionary; and depending on the certain sentence or context, they will be understood with their different meanings These words often make translators convert wrongly if they don’t have a deep knowledge about these words as well as the context of the original text In this translating section, I listed some words which cause the variety of meaning Therefore, to have the most suitable meaning, I usually read the original text to define the best meaning Example 1: “He entered the temple to ask for a monk to ordain him but no one wanted to that for him.” (P5) [1] to officially make someone a priest or other religious leader, in a religious ceremony [2] to order something to happen [3] to make someone officially a priest, minister, or rabbi in a religious ceremony [4] to enact or establish by law, edict, etc [5] to invest someone with sacerdotal functions Because in this case the writer wants to talk about a person who want to become a Buddhist monk or nun so it seems the initial meaning is the most Supervisor: Huynh Vu Chi Tam Student: Đỗ Thanh Tuyền Faculty of English Page 36 Graduation Thesis suitable It means “xuất gia, tu hành ”, so I translate “xuất gia” in this situation Suggested version: “Anh ta vào chùa để xin vị sư xuất gia cho khơng muốn thực điều đó.” Example 2: “When I became a novice and was made a teacher, my salary was twenty-five baht.” (P10) In Cambridge Dictionaries the noun “novive” is defined by some meanings: [1] a person who is not experienced in a job or situation [2] a person who is training to be a monk or a nun [3] a person who is beginning to learn a job or an activity and has little or no experience or skill in it As you can see, the author are refering to a monk Therefore, I choose the second meaning to translate, and in Vietnamese it means” người tu” Suggested version: Khi trở thành người tu làm giáo viên, lương 25 baht Example 3: In the old days in Thailand, there were many families of the so-called aristocrats In Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries and Tratu Soha, the noun “aristocrats” is defined by some meanings: [1] a person of high social rank who belongs to the aristocracy [2] a member of the aristocracy Besides, there are several synonyms such as nobleman, nob, patrician It can be seen that the word “aristocrats” has several meanings Thus, I chose the first meaning is the best answer with Vietnamese meaning “quý tộc” Supervisor: Huynh Vu Chi Tam Student: Đỗ Thanh Tuyền Faculty of English Page 37 Graduation Thesis Suggested version: Ngày xưa Thái Lan có nhiều gia đình gọi quý tộc Example 4: “They are handicapped in certain parts of the body” [p18] According to Cambridge Dictionary and Lingoes the noun, verb “handicap” is defined by some meanings: [1] a condition in which part of your body or mind has been permanently damaged or does not work normally This word is now considered offensive by many people, who prefer the word disability [2] something that makes it difficult for you to something [3] to make something more difficult for somebody to Suggested version: Trẻ em bị khuyết tật số phận thể 2.1.2 Specific phrases Specific terms are one of the most difficult and challenging part in translating To solve these specific terms, translators are required not only to be good at bilingual languages but also to have deep knowledge about all fields, especially the field they are translating When doing graduation paper, I have some many difficulties because of specific terms To deal with all of these difficulties, I had to look up lots of so many dictionaries and different websites as well Example 5: “IN THE Mangala Sutta, which the monks chant in a housewarming reli-gious ceremony at home, one of the man gala mentioned in the chanting is n b a a” [p18] Suggested version: TRONG KINH Mangala, mà nhà sư tụng buổi lễ tôn giáo ấm cúng nhà, người đàn ông đề cập tụng n b a a 2.2 STRUCTURES Structure plays an important role in the meaning of sentence In a paragraph, there are several sentences with difference clauses we must Supervisor: Huynh Vu Chi Tam Student: Đỗ Thanh Tuyền Faculty of English Page 38 Graduation Thesis analyze the grammatical components that are able to guess the meaning of sentence To understand the meaning of the document completely, you must base on the sentence’s words and structures Thus, translators are required to have a thorough grasp of grammar structures in the source language with the purpose of transferring successfully the text’s meaning into target language 2.2.1 Compound sentence A compound sentence contains two clauses that are joined together by a comma and a coordinating conjunction There are coordinating conjunctions FOR, AND, NOR, BUT, OR, YET, SO Example 6: “You may give suggestions or you may ask questions so the children will have to think about them” As we can see that there are two clauses connected by the coordinator “and” Having a subject “you” in the first clause and the subject “you” of the second clause are in this sentence Suggested version: Bạn đưa gợi ý bạn đặt câu hỏi để bọn trẻ phải suy nghĩ chúng 2.2.2 Complex Sentence A complex sentence has an independent clause and at least one dependent clause The dependent clause begins with a subordinating conjunction Example 7: “When he would not be ordained, he became pitifully emaciated.” [p5] Dependent clause: When he would not be ordained Independent clause: he became pitifully emaciated Subordinating conjunction: When Suggested translation: Khi không xuất gia, anh trở nên tiều tụy cách đáng thương 2.2.3 Compound- Complex Sentence Example 8: “I loved to read for knowledge and I would buy any new good books even though they were expensive.” (P10) Independent clauses: I loved to read for knowledge and I would buy any new good books Dependent clauses: even though they were expensive Supervisor: Huynh Vu Chi Tam Student: Đỗ Thanh Tuyền Faculty of English Page 39 Graduation Thesis Two independent clause: are connected the coordination “and” and one dependent clause Suggested translation: “Tơi thích đọc để tìm hiểu kiến thức mua sách hay dù chúng đắt tiền.” 2.2.4 Passive Voice Passive voice emphasizes the person or object receiving the action Example 9: Eventually everybody is all disturbed emotionally (P2) Tense: Simple Present A verb in passive voice is often translated into “ảnh hưởng” Therefore, I decide to translate the sentence into Vietnamese Suggested version: Cuối tất người bị ảnh hưởng mặt cảm xúc 2.2.5 Relative Clause Relative clause is a part of sentence that cannot exist independencetly and describles a noun that comes before it in the main part of the sentences Example 10: Those who love their parents are obedient children (P13) According to the example, there is a relative clause “who love their parents” modifying the noun phrase “those” Suggested Version: Những người yêu thương cha mẹ người ngoan ngoãn 2.2.6 Noun Clause A noun clause is a dependent clause that acts as a noun Example 11: You must make them realize that their parents are the life and everything to them (P13) Based on the example, the noun clause “You must make them realize that their parents are the life and everything to them” It contains the subject their and the verb is are The clause acts as a predicate nominative in the sentence, identifying realize Supervisor: Huynh Vu Chi Tam Student: Đỗ Thanh Tuyền Faculty of English Page 40 Graduation Thesis Suggested Version: Bạn phải làm cho chúng nhận cha mẹ sống tất chúng 2.2.7 Empty subject English clauses which are not imperatives must have a subject Sometimes we need to use a ‘dummy’ or ‘empty’ or ‘artificial’ subject when there is no subject attached to the verb, and where the real subject is somewhere else in the clause It and there are the two empty subjects used in English Example 13 : “I did not have much trouble with money because when I had the money I did not spend it if there was no need to so.” (P10) Suggested version: Tôi không gặp nhiều khó khăn tiền bạc có tiền tơi không tiêu không cần thiết Example 14: “There is no split among them” [p20] Suggested version: Khơng có phân chia chúng Example 15: “It is to train the children to understand that we live our lives among our relatives” [p21] Suggested version: Đó huấn luyện bọn trẻ để hiểu sống sống người thân với CHAPTER DIFFICULTIES AND SOLUTIONS 5.1 DIFFICULTIES This graduation paper is a good for me to use my English skills and get more knowledge which I learned in Duy Tan University during four years Through my graduation paper, I have gained lots of things about translation This paper is about the book “LOVE YOUR CHILDREN THE RIGHT WAY” BY BUDDHA DHARMA EDUCATION ASSOCIATION INC, APRIL 2000 Despite spending time on looking up some documents on America in Supervisor: Huynh Vu Chi Tam Student: Đỗ Thanh Tuyền Faculty of English Page 41 Graduation Thesis general and the media in particular, I have still faced a number of difficulties in vocabulary and grammar listed as follows as well: Firstly, my major is English Translation and Interpretation, so I did study deeply about translation theory and practices but not media knowledge However, sometimes I not have enough ability to understand and translate several expressions of the text correctly During the translating process, I caught many words that have multiple and abstract meaning, so I was confused to choose the appropriate meaning for the translated sentences or ideas and it also makes me waste more time in looking up and choosing the most suitable meaning Especially, specialized words in the fields of Service is the most difficult to translate As a result, some suggested versions still sound unnatural Moreover, the structure is also another issue that made me quite anxious There are many complex structures and phrases that are very hard or even obscure to analyse in this text It makes me difficult to give an exact meaning of a particular field So I asked my supervisor and my friends for advice to have a clearer understanding and a better translation Finally, because the time is limited while the text length is quite long, I had to complete as well as possible The difference in using language between English and Vietnamese makes sentence not smooth and natural This demands a translator to get experiences in dealing with especially the complex or complex - compound sentences In short, being able to understand the original text is very neccessary, I must try my best to give a briefly and exactly translated version which is easy for readers to understand 5.2 SOLUTIONS During the translating process of my graduation thesis, I gained experiences of solving difficulties and challenges Supervisor: Huynh Vu Chi Tam Student: Đỗ Thanh Tuyền Faculty of English Page 42 Graduation Thesis Firstly, I found and read some books and documents involved to guest experience, so I had some knowledge of this field Then, I also referred to some thesis of the predecessors in the library and followed the directions of the Department to master the process and the way of doing graduation paper Secondly, I skimmed the whole text to understand basic content of this chapter, then I listed some specific phrases as well as hard words Once I understood the content clearly, I began translating it completely Besides, I discussed with some friends, especially my supervisor and searched for reference on the Internet Next, I scheduled my time to this thesis step by step and tried to finish it on time I also looked up many dictionaries and related documents when translating the multiple words as well as difficult phrases Also, I always asked my friends and even my family members whether they could understand my version This is really a good way that I could to improve my paper’s quality Lastly, I used many kinds of dictionaries, such as: English - Vietnamese dictionary of the Linguistics Institute, Lac Viet dictionary, the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, Lingoes Essential Dictionary, etc to find out the best meanings CHAPTER CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION 6.1 CONCLUSION After completing this graduation paper, I myself has gained a lot of precious experiences in translating, which helps me pave the way for my future Through this paper, I had more chances to practice and cultivate my translation skills as well Furthermore, I am in belief that I more knowledge about good tips and advises for hotel professionals and the importance of Supervisor: Huynh Vu Chi Tam Student: Đỗ Thanh Tuyền Faculty of English Page 43 Graduation Thesis training, and even gain many valuable experiences for future during the process of completing this paper Moreover, when translating, I faced with the dilemma of new words, and it makes me feel anxious in understanding the whole meaning of the translation text I feel so confused to choose the most suitable meaning and even sometimes I could not how to convey it into Vietnamese and how to use suitable word in each certain context Besides, the structures in this chapter are really diverse and complicated and I have to translate and analyze cautiously Thanks to this graduation paper, I could improve my translating skills a lot during this time It is an undeniable fact that this paper would have not been completed without my supervisor invaluable support Also, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all the lectures of the Faculty of English whose lectures have enriched my academic knowledge of English during four years 6.2 Suggestions After finishing my graduation paper, I would like to offer some suggestions for both the language learners and teachers 6.2.1 Suggestions for learners About four years of learning at Faculty of English with major Translation and Interpretation, it is uneasy for the students of English major to master translation skill as well as to become a professional translator, so I think the first demand you to be passionate for learning languages and have a solid foundation to keep up with it Especially, we must master carefully the structure, syntax, or semantics, and idioms, etc to understand the implication of the author and interpret it correctly Moreover, I think you should attempt to watch and listen painstakingly to English motion pictures or TV arrangement with Vietnamese subtitles Read more books, day by day news, magazines, specialized or non-specialized Supervisor: Huynh Vu Chi Tam Student: Đỗ Thanh Tuyền Faculty of English Page 44 Graduation Thesis articles, in your mother tongue and the foreign language Distinguish applicable reference sources on the Internet for the most appropriate and accurate When you have completed your translated version, run your spell checker and right any incorrect spellings and grammatical errors Thereby, your suggested translation can sound more natural and smoother Last but not least, because the time to complete the graduation paper is limited, students meet many difficulties with translate methods Furthermore, they may not fully understand and complete the text carefully Therefore, I think that the department should give students more time 6.2.2 Suggestions for teachers I would like to give some suggestions for the Faculty of English - Duy Tan University: Firstly, I think that the teachers should give students more opportunities to improve the translation analysis skills with rich fields And teaching materials which is also estimated as an important part of every subject should be various in topic and suitable for students’s ability Besides, it would be better if teachers gave students many enjoyable and attractive topics with the aims of helping them practice and learn some things from it Educational aims can be inserted in each translation passage through a lesson, a story, or a piece of knowledge Secondly, the Faculty of English at Duy Tan University could create favourable conditions for students get more practical experience Especially, to improve student can be more confident, department should create more chances to practice translation and interpretation in outside Finally, I hope Duy Tan University will expand some useful extra curriculum so that students can practise many projects.I believe that these things will help you have a lot ofexperiences and knowledge and you can be more confident to complete this graduation paper Supervisor: Huynh Vu Chi Tam Student: Đỗ Thanh Tuyền Faculty of English Page 45 Graduation Thesis SUPERVISOR’S COMMENTS Supervisor: Huynh Vu Chi Tam Student: Đỗ Thanh
