Activity: What is it?

Hold up a phonics card, partly hidden by a sheet of paper

Slowly reveal the card The students try to guess what the phonics card is.

Activity 1: Hangman

(6mins)

 Divide the class into two teams, A and B

 Choose a word and write the appropriate number of spaces

on the board

 Ask two teams to take turn guessing a letter If a student

guesses correctly, write that letter in the space and give the student another turn If a student guesses incorrectly, draw one line of the hangman picture and have a student from the other team guess a letter

 The team that correctly guesses the word wins a point  Ask students with disability guesses the word wins a point

Requirements: students with disability can

see and practise

Match and colour Say the letter and

the sound

Explain the activity

 Ask the students to say the letters

 The students match the upper case letters to the lower case

ones

 Say the letter and the sound

 Ask individual students to repeat the letter and the sound  Go around and provide any necessary help

 Ask individual students to say out the letter and the sound  Ask students with disability to repeat the letter and the

sound

 Requirements: students with disability can see and practise 

Activity 2: Unscramble the words (8mins)

 Put up some phonics cards on the board

 Write the letters of the words around them in random order

 Ask individual students to come to the board and write the

words Or ask the class to take out their notebooks and write down the correct words

 The first student who finishes can choose other cards and

put them up on the board

 Teacher writes the letters of the words around the cards in

random order then the activity continues

 Ask students with disability choose other cards and put

them up on the board

Yell it Out (10ms)

 Ask students to work in pairs

 Have some pairs come to the front of the classroom and

face each other with their hands behind their backs

 Stick a phonics card onto each student’s back

 Students have to look at the other student’s phonics card

and be the first to yell out the word They this by moving around and trying to see it

 Repeat the activity with the remaining pairs

 Ask students with disability repeat Requirements: students

with disability can see and practise

Say the words Draw lines to match

 Ask students to name each picture

 Ask students to match the pictures that begin with the same

letter and then match them to the corresponding letter

 Go around and provide any necessary help
