(1)LESSON PLAN Unit 12: The Asian Games Lesson: Language focus Class: 11/1 Time allotted: 45’ Aim: To help students learn and practice pronunciation and the structure of Relative clauses Objectives: By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to: - Distinguish the sounds /str/, /skr/, /skw/ - Pronoun the words and sentences containing these sounds correctly - Revise relative clauses to exercises - Understand about the omission of relative pronouns Teaching aids and materials:Textbook, blackboard, handouts, projector Procedure: Stages/ time Activities I Warm-up ( 5’) Game: Slap the board Objective: to involve Ss and lead in the new lesson - T writes sounds /str/, /skr/, /skw/ on the blackboard - T divides the class into teams: A and B - T calls Ss for each team to the front of the class - Ask Ss to stand at equal distance from the blackboard - T calls out the words containing the sounds one by one (1 squire scream squeak straight scroll strict squire stress scrunch 10 straw) - Ss run forward to slap the sounds on the blackboard - Which team slaps more correct words first will be the winner - T allows Ss to play Key: /str/ /skr/ /skw/ straight scream squire strict scroll squeak stress scrunch squeal 10 straw - T declares the winner and gives gift Lead in: - T introduces: in our lesson today, we will practice the sounds: /str/, /skr/ and /skw/ Lop11.com Work arrangements Team work (2) II Presentation: Pronunciation Objective: to help Ss distinguish the sounds ( 7’) - T shows the table on the screen: /str/ /skr/ /skw/ Street Scream Square Strong Screen Squeeze Strange Screw Squeak Strength Scratch Squeal Teacher – whole class - T pronounces aloud the words in each column and asks Ss to repeat - T asks Ss to pronounce the words chorally and individually - T listens and corrects their pronunciation Practice: Objective: to help Ss practice reading the sentences containing the target sounds - T asks Ss to read through the sentences on the textbook and underline the words containing the sounds - T shows the sentences on the screen: There was a strong man on the street at night The strong man looked very strange He was holding an ice-cream in one hand, and a rubber doll in the other hand The man was eating the ice-cream, squeezing the doll and it was squeaking The man was screaming while walking to the square Nobody knew why he was doing the strange things Teacher – whole class - T reads the sentences and asks Ss to repeat chorally - T asks some Ss to read out loud the sentences - T gives feedback III Grammar (24’) Presentation: - T gives Ss examples: + Ex1: The woman is very friendly She lives next door + Ex2: This is the novel Shakespeare wrote this novel + Ex3: The girl is very nice I talked about her yesterday Lop11.com Teacher – whole class (3) - T asks Ss to combine each pair of sentences into sentence using relative pronoun Expected answer: + Ex1: The woman who/ that lives next door is very friendly + Ex2: This is the novel which/ that Shakespeare wrote + Ex3: The girl whom/ that I talked about yesterday is very nice - T underlines the relative pronouns and asks Ss: “What is the function of these relative pronouns?” Ss: Ex1: Subject, Ex2: Object, Ex3: Object of preposition - T points to each relative pronoun and asks Ss: “Can we omit it?” - T gives explanation and rewrites the sentences: + Ex1: Can’t omit, (Subject) The woman who/ that lives next door is very friendly + Ex2: Can omit, (Object) This is the novel Shakespeare wrote + Ex3: Can omit, (we can omit the relative pronoun and put the preposition after the verb of relative clause) The girl I talked about yesterday is very nice - T gives Ss some Notes: + Relative pronouns of defining relative clause “who, whom, which, that” can be omitted when they are objects of the verb + But we can’t omit: a Relative pronouns after a comma (in a non-defining relative clause) b Relative pronouns after a preposition c “Who, which, that” as a subject Ex: a Dam Vinh Hung, who sings very well, is a famous singer b The house in which he lives is very old c The diamond ring which/ that is bought by Mary is expensive Lop11.com (4) Practice: Activity 1: (Exercise in textbook) Objective: to help Ss practice making relative clauses without a relative pronoun - T asks Ss to exercise individually - T walks around to monitor Ss’ work - T invites some Ss to read their answers - T gives correction and shows the answers on the screen Expected answer: Individual work Have you found the bike you lost? Most of the classmates he invited to the party couldn’t come The short stories John told were very funny The dictionary I bought yesterday is expensive, but very interesting I didn’t like the man we met this morning The beef we had for lunch was really delicious Activity 2: (Exercise in textbook) Objective: to help Ss practice making relative clauses with a preposition - T asks Ss to exercise individually - T moves around and helps Ss - T calls some Ss to give their answers - T listens and corrects Ss’ mistakes - T shows the answers on the screen Expected answer: I enjoy my job because I like the people I work with The dinner party we went to wasn’t very enjoyable The house we’re living in is not in good condition I wasn’t interested in the things they were talking about He didn’t get the job he applied for The bed I slept in was very modern Lop11.com Individual work (5) Activity 3: Objective: to help Ss practice making sentences using relative clause and identifying which relative pronoun can be omitted - T shows the sentences on the screen: Combine the following sentences, using a relative clause, and put a relative pronoun in bracket ( ) if it can be omitted Beckham is a famous footballer I met him on T.V yesterday The dictionary is very useful It has 205,000 words I’m reading the book I bought it in 1996 I know the girl I spoke to this girl this morning This is Mary She is my sister in law - T asks Ss to work in pairs - Ss are asked to make sentences using relative clause and identify whether the relative pronouns can be omitted or not Anticipated problem: + Ss may not understand clearly how to + T gives examples as the models: Ex1: The novel is very good My sister wrote it The novel (which) my sister wrote is very good Ex2: Dan Truong is a singer He sings “Tinh khuc vang” song Dan Truong, who sings “Tinh khuc vang” song, is a singer - T lets Ss the exercise - T goes around class and gives helps - T calls on some Ss from each pair to go to the blackboard and write down their sentences - T corrects Ss’ answers Lop11.com Pair work (6) IV Production (8’) Expected answer: Beckham, whom I met on T.V yesterday, is a famous footballer The dictionary which has 205,000 words is very useful I’m reading the book (which/that) I bought in 1996 I know the girl (whom) I spoke to this morning This is Mary, who is my sister in law Activity 1: Objective: to help Ss use the knowledge they have just learn to identify the mistakes and rewrite the sentences - T asks Ss to work in groups of - T delivers the handouts to Ss: Find the mistakes in the following sentences and correct them Are these the keys for which you are looking? This puppy, that my grandfather gave me on my birthday, is months old The table was broken has now been repaired The ladder on I was standing began to slip This is Mr Hung who writes the script of the film - In each group, Ss are asked to find the mistakes in the sentences and rewrite them in the right form - T calls on some Ss from each group to give the answers - T checks Ss’ answers Expected answer: Are these the keys (which) you are looking for?
