The audience is a teacher or professor What is the purpose of the writing? You need to develop an argument or opinion Usually this is done in paragraphs: introduction, reason (with examples), reason (with examples), addressing counter-arguments (with examples), conclusion Is it formal? Yes Should I use headings or bullet points? No How should it start? It’s im ortant to rovide a kind of framework for the reader in yo r o ening paragraph If you have been asked to give your opinion on something, you should state what your opinion is (or give a hint) at the beginning This shows that you have a clear goal in mind and a desired outcome for the reader (to be convinced by your arguments) Without this, you give the impression that you have just thought about things, and written some things, and you managed to convince yourself at the end That is appropriate for a blog or journal entry, but not for an essay for your teacher How should it finish? You need to clearly state your opinion in your conclusion Compiled by Ms BUI THI NGOC OANH Before you write the answer, spend minutes on reading the questions and answer the following questions: How many questions you have to answer in your writing? Who is your target reader? What kind of grammar and vocabulary should you use in your writing? What style should you use? Formal style? Neutral or informal style? Should we divide into paragraphs? What is the organization for your writing? Some tips for writing essay - Always assure of the purpose of your writing Keep in your mind what are you writing? Why are you writing? Who are you writing to? Capitals at the end of some of the lines to form a word that fits in the gap in the same line Customer reviews The (0) in paperback of Mathew Quick’s debut novel represented something of a milestone The promotional material that (1) the launch featured glowing, five-star reviews such as ‘charming and well-written, (2) the best book I’ve read this year’ Nothing so unusual in that, you might think Except that these notices came not from the pens of (3) critics or on national newspapers, but from actual readers who had bought the book on the internet, and enjoyed it enough to post a positive review on the site Presumably, no (4) incentive or other consideration coloured the view of these readers, whose opinions appear in an (5) form, as can be seen from the various spelling and grammatical mistakes they often contain It could be argued, of course, that the (6) of an informed literary critic may well be more (7) than the thoughts of one casual reader But along with the actual words penned by the amateur reviewers, the site records the star rating awarded to each title by all readers providing (8) The book receives a cumulative star rating based on the average number of stars awarded, and constant (9) are made as further reviews come in The more people like the book, the higher the star rating Maybe that kind of (10) speaks for itself The PUBLISH COMPANY ARGUE ache terribly afterwards GAIN POSSIBLE COURAGE Compiled by Ms BUI THI NGOC OANH This happens when you try to too much too soon Fitness can’t be built up (8) it has to be done o gradually Taking part fit enough to embark on the training NIGHT COMMIT ADVISE THE INVENTOR OF BAR CODE DAY Although you might never have heard of Joe Woodland, you almost certainly use his invention on a (0) _ basis For Joe was the man who came up with the idea of the bar code – that little box containing parallel lines of (1) _ width and (2) _ that you find on the packaging of most products that are offered for sale at retail (3) _ world wide Joe Woodland actually invented the bar code way back in 1949, when the manager of a supermarket in Philadelphia asked him to design an electronic (4) _ system which would be both simple and effective The purpose of the bar code is to store (5) _ information about the product, which (6) _ speeds up the in the process of recording sales and restocking the shelves Joe’s (7) _ came from Morse code and he formed his first bar code sand on the beach one day The idea was way ahead of its time however and didn’t find any immediate practical (8) _ Convinced that the system was (9) _ with further development, however, Woodland didn’t give up It was the (10) _ laser gun use technology decades later which allowed Joe’s invention to come into everyday use 23 REGULAR LONG LET Appropriate active & passive verb tenses Appropriate verb forms for describing how people things Conditional and comparative structures Vocabulary connected with work or education Vocabulary describing feelings and attitudes REGISTER The reader sho ld nderstand f lly the writer’s view on the to ic, and the arg ments that the writer puts forward in support of those views MODEL ANSWER It is of course true that people are happier if they enjoy their work or education, but in my view it is not necessarily true that they cannot learn or work effectively unless they are having fun These days, the idea that work and ed cation have to be ‘f n’ is wides read in some countries In other places, people assume that education and work may be hard and not at all fun These people regard education and work as things that simply have to be done, and they not expect them to be particularly enjoyable Some people believe that the more you enjoy doing something, the better you it, but I not believe that this is always the case Plenty of people jobs they don’t enjoy b t they them very effectively because that is what is expected of them and that is what they expect of themselves They their jobs well because that is what they are being paid to do, and enjoyment is not the main thing on their minds Equally, many people well in their education because they want to be successful and therefore they study hard, not because they particularly enjoy studying In my o inion, the word ‘essential’ sho ld be changed to ‘desirable’ in the first sentence Of course, it would be great if everyone could things that they really enjoy, but the reality is that not 27 Compiled by Ms BUI THI NGOC OANH everyone can I think it’s a bon s if yo can s end yo r time doing things that are f n, not a requirement (258 words) Fhhf CONTENT The essay must fully address the points made in the statement – that everyone should travel abroad is something ‘essential’ The writer can totally agree or disagree, or both agree and disagree The writer’s o inions m st be s orted by logical arg ments and reasons RANGE OF GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY - A wide range of verb tenses, for example: present tenses for general and current situations; past simple and present perfect tenses for past situations and facts - Conditional structures, relative clauses and passive structures - Structure and vocabulary for giving opinions - Vocabulary connected with travel, advantages and disadvantages, feelings and attitudes REGISTER: neutral/ fairly formal The topic is a fairly serious one and an essay should not be too informal ORGANIZATION AND COHESION - The essay should begin and end with a brief introduction and conclusion Divide into paragraphs with a different aspect of the topic Different paragraphs may agree or disagree with the statement Linking words & phrases link reasons and arguments to support them TARGET READER: sho ld nderstand f lly the writer’s views on the to ic, and the arg ments that the writer puts forward in support of those views Model answer Of course, these days travelling abroad is commonplace, and a considerable number of people have experience of it Many young people go travelling for quite long periods when they are students, lots of people have holidays abroad, and many schools organize trips for schoolchildren It is generally assumed that going to other countries is a good thing, but whether or not it is ‘essential’ is another matter This assumes that people who have never been to another country are in some way missing something, that their lives are in some way incomplete because of this I am not convinced that this is the case I think it is quite possible to learn a lot about life, and to have an enormous variety of experiences of life, if you stay in your own country for the whole of your life That is of course what previous generations did, when there was little or no opportunity for foreign travel We cannot 28 Compiled by Ms BUI THI NGOC OANH say that eo le today who have travelled abroad are a tomatically ‘better’ in some way than everyone in the past It is also debatable whether everyone who does travel abroad today can be said to benefit from the experience in any serious way Lots of people who go abroad are not really interested in the places they visit, and make no effort to learn anything about the culture, the people, the history or the way of life in the places they visit So I not believe that travelling abroad is ‘essential’ Of co rse, it is a great ex erience for many eo le, b t I don’t think it is necessarily something that everyone m st Model answer The Pelican Brief is very good book of John Grisham It is also a very great film with Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington Julia Roberts is one of my favourite actor and she plays very well her part of the heroine, who is a law student In the story, this heroin law undergraduate tries to discover why two judges are murdered She soons understands that politics, including President of the USA, and big businesses are involved in the crime and she is also almost murdered several times In the end, a journalist helps her to find the truth The story is called The Pelican Brief beause at the centre of the story there is some land where pelicans live Big businesses want to destroy this land A brief are instructions for a job for a lawyer or some other person Therefore, the heroine’s brief is that she co ld find o t the reason of the m rder of the j dges That reason is the elicans’ land which both j dges wanted to kee for the pelicans Businesses want to develop the land, consequently, the judges are killed In conclusion, The Pelican Brief is a very exciting story and I enjoyed reading it very much I alsolutely recommend that people should read it even they have already seen the film When I read it, I did not want to sto reading it and I co ldn’t t it down ntil I finished it 29 Compiled by Ms BUI THI NGOC OANH REPORT Model answer Riverdale College S orts Cl b is advertised as one of the best cl bs of New Zealand Yo can’t avoid saying it’s good, b t on the other hand a lot of c stomers are com laining abo t it First of all, there are a variety of rooms, but there is no place to relax or have a drink after the activities Therefore, we should have a relax room in other to create a more familiar atmosphere Another big problem is the shower room Showers are always broken, consequently, people have to wait long hours before finding a free one This makes customers unsatisfied, so words rapidly get around and this creates a bad image of the club Besides, people are also complaining about the fitness room which is always crowded We should create another one so that customers will feel better We can also add organized classes beca se eo le who come here for the first time often don’t know what to I also suggest to change the open-days Peo le who work from Monday to Friday don’t have time to come here, so they will probably choose another club All in all, I can say that a satisfied customer is the key to success, so we should improve everything we can such as paying more attention to the atmosphere and, particularly, to the comfort Content The report must describe and comment on all the events It cannot include every detail provided on the events and in the notes Instead, it must select the appropriate event details and comments to create a coherent report that presents an analysis of the events and the writer;s comments and conclusions on them Range of grammar and vocabulary - Appropriate past tenses to describe the events Appropriate future tenses for future recommendations Conditional structures to talk about how the events could have been organized in the past & in the future Vocabulary associated with organizing, staging events and profit and loss Register: neutral/ fairly formal (a report for committee) Organization and cohesion: - divide into sections dealing with each event 30 Compiled by Ms BUI THI NGOC OANH - descriptions should be linked with causes and results of what happened & recommendations relating to it - linking words/ phrases Model answer: REPORT ON ENTERTAINMENTS Theatre Trip (19 March) The choice of play was excellent – it was as funny as it had been described in the local paper However, not many people came to the event, and because of the cost of hiring a coach to take us there, we lost money on the event If we are to offer a similar trip in future, we will need to advertise more extensively so that we get enough people to make it viable financially Music evening (20 June) This event was very successful and very well attended We were able to choose excellent bands to perform because there are so many talented bands locally As a result, demand for tickets was high and we sold out of them before the event The atmosphere at the event was excellent and it was enjoyed by everyone there We made a big profit on this event Annual party (1 August) We need to change the way we organized this in future We didn’t sell tickets in advance and underestimated the number of people who would come As a result, there were too many people and the Main Hall was overcrowded On the other hand, the very varied food that was provided proved very popular and we were able to make a small profit on the event CONTENT The report must address all the points listed – who the writer visisted and when, what happened during the visit, how the visit compared with the earlier visit, and general comments on the exchange programme RANGE OF GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY - A ro riate ast tenses to describe the writer’s visit and the earlier visit Compare structures to compare the two visits Structures for giving opinions or recommending for the general comments Vocabulary appropriate to the topic of visiting people and places Vocabulary for describing behaviour and feelings REGISTER: fairly formal/ neutral 31 Compiled by Ms BUI THI NGOC OANH ORGANIZATION AND COHESION - The report should begin with an opening paragraph, briefly explaining the background Divided into paragraphs, such as the previous visit, the recent visit and general points about the programme Each paragraph could be presented as a separate section with its own heading Linking words/ phrases TARGET READER: should understand fully what both visits were like and what the writer’s opinion of them is, as well as what the writer thinks of the programme in general and why Model answer: EXCHANGE VISIT TO LONDON In July, I went to London to stay with Helen Oliver and her family for three weeks as part of the exchange programme Helen had previously been to stay with me for three weeks in March Helen and her family made me feel welcome from the very beginning I was told that I should make myself at home and come and go as I pleased They provided wonderful meals and made me feel that I was part of the family In view of all this, it may be unfair to criticize However, the problem for me was that I had no idea what to or where to go most of the time Helen took me into the town once or twice but apart from that she didn’t take me to any laces of interest I had to find things to for myself, with little or no guidance, and as a result I felt that I wasted a lot of my time When Helen stayed with me, my family and I took her somewhere almost every day, and she commented on how much she had appreciated our efforts and how much she had learnt about our city I had been expecting something similar to happen when I stayed with her So, although I enjoyed my trip in many ways, I recommend that it should be made clear to everyone taking part in the programme that they are expected to provide some sort of programme of activities for visitors or at least give them the information they need to make the most of their stay Model answer To: College Principal From: Student Annette Fournier Topic: Career Conference Attended As requested, I am submitting a report about this conference we attended last weekend at Vancouver Hall expressing our points of views about this event The conference was opened on Friday at 9.00 a.m and the opening ceremony was crowded with professors and students from different colleges from all over Canada The following days we attended the exhibitions exposed, even though there were talks on wide range of careers, it was very difficult to find experts available to give advice about specific 32 Compiled by Ms BUI THI NGOC OANH jobs There were over 100 different jobs, however, for us it was impossible to change ideas with a specilized person in languages Despite this fact, the exhibition was great, some of the talks were amazingly good especially the ones about science, we learnt a lot about this field A good idea would be that for the forthcoming exhibitions more humanities experts would attend the conference and also organizers should try to get enough people to answer questions In summary, we could say it was an excellent opportunity for us to share with several kinds of students and an extraordinary way to get knowledge about so many careers that will enhance our future studies Content - Describe the two most amusing scenes - Explain why Organization and cohesion - Clearly organized into paragraphs with appropriate linking devices - Headings may be an advantage Range: - Language of description, opinion and explanation Vocabualry related to description of humour and comment on a story Appropriacy of register and format: may mix registers Target reader: would be informed Hfhf Report for Book Club In the Frame by Dick Francis The story This is an exciting story abo t a man who st dies the m rder of his co sin’s wife He is a very brave man who finds himself in very dangerous situations but in the end he can find the answer He has to travel to the other end of the world and the reader has the chance to go to Australia and New Zealand We also can learn about the strange worlds of horse-racing and art Recommendation I think that In the Frame will be a very good book to our club to discuss It is exciting and o r cl b members wo ld enjoy to read it When I read it, I co ldn’t sto beca se I wanted to know what will happen very much From time to time, I was thinking that the hero will not survive Moreover, it was extremely interesting to read about different places of the world 33 Compiled by Ms BUI THI NGOC OANH In addition, the book is good to learn English because it is a modern book and there is a lot of conversation in it and so we can learn the language of today, not the language of the past I learnt a lof of useful vocabulary and expressions from it In short, I would like to recommend it for our Book Club We could spend a very happy evening to discuss it I think we can, for example, talk about the hero and his character and his relations with other people in the book 34 ... trợ cho viết với chứng, ví dụ cụ thể vả kết luận phù hợp Nội dung chi tiết học phần 3. 1 Danh mục vấn đề học phần Phương há tổng quát viết luận kỹ thuật Viết luận thể loại tranh luận Viết luận... thức viết luận văn q a q trình th thậ thơng tin, đọc luyện viết Chủ đề 4: Viết báo cáo (report) Mức độ Nội dung Kiến thức Phân tích đề yêu cầ đề Bố cục báo cáo 2 Kỹ Viết báo cáo hái độ : Ý thức viết. .. 1 .Viết luận kỹ thuật 2 .Viết luận với hệ thống cú pháp hoàn chỉnh hái độ Nhận thức viết luận văn trình rèn luyện lâu dài nghiêm túc Có ý thức tự học tự rèn luyện, làm tập nhà để nâng cao kỹ viết
