HOW TO TEACH READING Step 1: Sts listen and read silently and then repeat after the recording Step 2: T provides the new words Step 3: Ask Sts to translate the reading into Vietnamese Step 4: Have Sts circle the verbs in red, the adjectives in blue, underline the subjects,… Step 5: Design some questions and get Sts to answer (Yes or No; True or False) Yes or No Is Milly seven? Is her dad a farmer? Is her grandma a nurse? True or False Milly’s ten This is Billy’s family Her mum is a doctor GAME 1: RUNNING DICTATION - Divide the class into or teams - T sticks some sentences or a short passage on the wall - Each team chooses a secretary - Sts from each team go to the wall and memorise the information, then Sts come back their team and dictates the information to the secretary and the secretary write it down The first team to finish says : “We win” - T checks the spelling GAME 2: THAT’S NOT RIGHT As you read the story to the Sts, try to trick them by changing some words T reads: “Now a bird’s in the tree The bird’s got the ball Look at the bird! ” When Sts hear a mistake, they shout out: “That’s no right” Then have them supply the correct words GAME 3: HOT POTATO Write questions on 12-15 pieces of paper (1/paper) Then wrap the papers around each other to make paper ball Sts sit in a circle While T plays music, Sts throw the paper ball to each other When T stops the music, the St is holding the ball takes off the outside piece of paper, reads the question and answer it Note: practise specific structures (tenses) GAME 4: TRUE OR FALSE Each st writes statements about themselves statements are true and three ones are false Sts take turn reading their statements aloud in small groups The other Sts guess which statements are true or false Sts will get one point for each correct guess GAME 5: CHAIN GAME Divide the class into 3-4 groups Explain the task S1 makes a sentence S2 repeats the sentence and adds to it S3 repeat the S2’s sentence and add to it Eg: S1= Last week, I went shopping S2= Last week, I went shopping and read a novel S3= Last week, I went shopping and read a novel and … S4 continues until a st can’t remember what to say Point out that the information in the sentence can be false Model the game with one group Note: Use this game to warm up the first class to help St to remember their names in class, or review specific vocab topics: food (I like….), clothes (I went to the bookstore and bought…) GAME 6: WORD CHAIN Place the word cards on the board in a given sequence Divide class into teams Invite st from each team to stand in front of the class, back to the board Eg: T writes Red - First, point to a student He says the first word in the sequence T writes Black - Next, point to another st He says the next word in the sequence Continue with each st saying the next word in the sequence, the st with good memory will get point for his team GAME 7: COMICS Find a comic story and photocopy it Whiteout the text in it Copy it again Make a copy for all of your Sts Have them write their own story You can have them write it in a specific tense ot it could be a free activitiy GAME 19: MAGIC BOX Sts work in groups Draw a puppet for each team Give a box with many words (ANGEL, BOOM, GUN) Sts have to steps: fill in the blank-make a sentence-choose a paper in the box) If they choose ANGEL, they will get balloon, sticker,… If they choose BOOM, their puppet will lose one part of its body If they choos GUN, they will have a right to shoot another team’s puppet GAME 20: Have BINGO Sts write the new words in the previous lesson in minutes Eg: School things (pen, pencil, ruler, book, bag, …) T reads words and Sts have the same words will shout “Bingo” Give a sticker for quick sts GAME 21: ACTION Make lines Let sts turn their backs T whisper one word for the first person in each line They should pass the word by acting it out to the nest persons (give them the signal to begin) Before passing the word to the next person, he should tap the shoulder of the next person as a go signal to turn his back again ad see the action to be passed The last person at the end of the line should shout the possible answer The first group who guess it right gets a point GAME 22: Select MISSING WORDS one or several sentences from the reading passage Write some sentences on the board, missing one or several words Have sts think of a word to fill in each space Have sts think of as many different words as possible that could fill in each space GAME 23: DART Buy a dart board Divide the class into teams T sticks new words on the board Sts from each team throw a dart and read out loud the words If they pronouce correctly, they bring the score for their team The team with the higher score will win GAME 24: HANG MAN Elect a card (eg: camel) _M Invite sts from each team to call out the letter If the letter is included in the word “camel”, write it over the appropriate dash If not write it at the side of the board and draw the first stroke of the hangman picture The team discovers the word, the team wins GAME 25: LADDERS Divide the sts into groups T draw ladders on the board Give them a topic or give each team a different topic Ask sts to write one word on each step of their ladder connected to their topic The first team to complete their ladder wins a point if they spell correctly Note: have one by one spelll the word GAME 26: WRITE A SONG Have sts work in group and write a song with the given word s or any words they want based on the melody of Vietnamese song Have the groups ferform in front the class GAME 27: BLIND BATTLE Divide the class into groups Each group has a representative from each group comes to the board Blind told them and give them an object to feel The sts must guess what the object is The winner is the st who gives the correct guessing WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER? GAME 28: Show a picture or play a short video Ask Sts to look at or watch carefully in some minutes, then display them Ask questions related to the picture or video (How many people were there?; What did the man do? ) Have sts talk about the video or picture in groups GAME 29: Divide MAKE OTHER WORDS the class into teams T writes one word on the board Eg: house Have sts write other words with the letter in the word -> house (hot, orange, under, sun, English) The team writes many words with the given word, the team will win GAME 30: DRAW A PICTURE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) 8) 9) 10) A house is in front of the mountains windowns are in the house A door is between the windows A tree is next to the house A boy and a girl are under the tree A cat is on the house A car is in front of the house A man is in the house A woman is behins the car The sun is on the mountains GAME 31: Write MAKE WORDS some random letters on the board Have sts work in pairs/small groups to make up as many words from the letters as possible The team with the most correct words is the winner Eg: Letters: a r c f l m t Words: car, cat, farm GAME 32: BACK WRITING Ask sts to work in groups Each group makes a line Show a letter card to the sts at the end of the lines Then they write the letter (use their fingers) on the back of the sts standing in front of them and son on… The last st (standing at the beginning of the lines) runs to the board and write down that letter The student with the correct answer will get one point for their group ...
