UNIT 1: A VISIT FROM A PEN PAL Lesson 1: Period 1: Getting started & Listen and read (p. 6 & 7) Aim: Reading the text for details. Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to know about some places Lan went to with a foreign friend and some activities they took part in together. Teaching aids: Textbook, pictures PROCEDURE Stage Steps/Activities Work arrangement Warm up * Chatting: - Do you have any pen pals? - Where does s/he live? - Has s/he ever visited your city? - What activities would you do during the visit? Can you guess where she went and what she did during her stay? - Give feedback to the whole class to the open prediction. - Ask students to read the text to check their prediction and add some more information. - Ask students to read the text again to choose the correct option to complete the sentences on page 7 (work in pairs) * Answers: Post reading 1. Ask students to write a short paragraph about what they have just discussed with their partner Homework -Write a passage telling what you should take your pen pal to when s/he comes to your city for the first time. - Do exercise on page 5 (workbook) 2 UNIT 1: A VISIT FROM A PEN PAL Date Lesson 2: Period 2: SPEAK (P. 8) Aim: Make and respond to introductions Objective: By the end of the lesson student will be able to make and respond to introduction Teaching aids: Textbook, pictures PROCEDURE Stage Steps/Activities Work arrangement Warm up * Pelmanism - Prepare ten cards with numbers on one side and the countries and their cities on the other - Make sure the counties and the cities are mixed up. Stick the cards on the board so students can only see the numbers. - Divide the students into two teams and ask them to choose two numbers. - Turn over the cards and see if they match, e.g. Tokyo - Japan. If not, turn the cards face down again and ask the other team to choose. Lesson 3: Period 3: LISTEN (P. 9) Aim: Listen for specific information. Objective: By the end of the lesson student will be able to listen to specific information to select the correct pictures. Teaching aids: Textbook, pictures PROCEDURE Stage Steps/Activities Work arrangement Warm up * Jumbled words: + tccah = catch + rkap = park + ondp = pond + rssag = grass + rrubhmage = hamburger - Divide the class into 2 teams. - Ask students from each team to go to the board write down the correct words. - The Team which is faster with more correct words wins the game Group work Pre- listening While- listening Set the scene: "Tim Jones's Mexican pen pal, Carlos is visiting the USA." Ask students to look at the pictures and tell the class what there is in each one, where the place is, what the people are doing. Some questions: - What’s the girl doing in a1? What’s the sign? -What’s the girl doing in a2? What’s the sign? - Which number of the bus in b1? In b2? - What is it in c1? ( a Mexican restaurant? - What is it in c2? ( a hamburgers fast food.) Open predictions: - Tell students that Tim is taking Carlos to visit some places. Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will have some knowledge about Malaysia, one of the counties of the ASEAN Teaching aids: Textbook, pictures, map of countries of the ASEAN. PROCEDURE Stage Steps/Activities Work arrangement Warm up * Hangman T-whole class - Draw strokes on the board. Each stroke stands for a letter of the word. - Students take turn to guess the letter of the word. - If a student's guess is not right, the teacher draws a stroke (according to the order in the picture). - If student guess wrong eight times, they lose.
