Một đặc điểm quan trọng, không thể thay thế, của tinh dầu so với các hợp chất hữu cơ tổng hợp khác là nó không gây hại môi trường và dễ phân hủy.Do có những công dụng thực tiễn quan trọng nên ngày càng có nhiều nghiên cứu cũng như khai thác về tinh dầu trên toàn thế giới. Ở nước ta, điều kiện thiên nhiên ưu đãi, thuận lợi cho việc hình thành và phát triển các loài thực vật, trong đó cây tinh dầu là một nguồn nguyên liệu đa dạng và vị trí của nó ngày càng được khẳng định.
