Stand/lie/sit + place + V-ing - Find/catch + someone + V-ing She often lies in her bed dreaming about her boyfriend I caught him reading your letter yesterday 194 INFINITIVES The infinitive is the original form of the verb with or without to 2.1 Bare Infinitives: A bare infinitive is the original verb without “to” A bare infinitive can function: 2.1.1 As a main verb after modal verbs: S + modal + bare inf I should go to class regularly 2.1.2 After perceptive verbs: See, Hear, Watch, Smell - V + bare infinitive (Complete action) I saw them eat that cake yesterday Passive: They were seen to eat that cake yesterday - V + Ving (Incomplete action) I saw them eating that cake yesterday Passive: They were seen eating that cake yesterday 2.1.3 After some certain verbs such as in the following structure: S +make/let/help + O + bare inf I made her cry They let me go Help me (to) carry this bag 2.1.4 In the causative form with have S + have + O + bare inf He had me polish his shoes Note: To have S.O S.T = To have S.T done He had his shoes polished 2.1.5 In the subjunctive noun clauses after the following verbs: advise, ask, command, demand, direct, insist, move, propose, urge, recommend, suggest, require S + V + that + S + bare inf He moved that I be ready for my next exam My girlfriend insisted that her father have a mistress Or after some certain adjectives: vital, advisable, urgent, essential,… It is + vital/ advisable/urgent/essential + that + S + bare inf It is vital that he make up his mind soon It is urgent that she have to go immediately 195 2.2 Full Infinitives (infinitives with to) List of common verbs followed by a full infinitive arrange decide offer hope agree deserve refuse pretend afford forget manage neglect attempt fail promise plan prepare ask expect beg want bother help volunteer … I decided to give up smoking years ago She hopes to get a good job after graduation THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE VERBS FOLLOWED BY AN INFINITIVE AND A GERUND 3.1 Some verbs are followed either by the “gerund” or by the “infinitive” without any important difference in the meaning Some of them are begin, start, prefer I began to work here in 2000 = I began working here in 2000 She prefers to her homework in the evening = She prefers doing her homework in the evening 3.2 Some other verbs, however, have different meanings according to whether they are followed by the gerunds or by the infinitives To stop - To stop + to infinitive = to stop what is being done to another thing When I arrived, he was doing his homework He stopped to talk to me - To stop + gerund = to give up doing something He stopped smoking = He gave up smoking To try - To try + to infinitive = to make an effort/attempt to something He tried to listen to me, but he could not - To try + gerund = to give a try at + gerund If you cannot fall asleep, try drinking some warm milk before bedtime To mean - To mean + to infinitive = to intend to something My father means to come and visit me next month - To mean + gerund = to signify/imply/involve in doing something Spending all money today means starving tomorrow To remember - To remember + to infinitive (to remember before performing the action) When you go out, remember to lock the door - To remember + gerund (to remember after performing the action) I remember meeting you somewhere before 196 To forget - To forget + to infinitive (not doing something because of forgetting) I am sorry I forgot to ring you last night - To forget + gerund (to forget something that has been already done) A “Why have you sent me the same message many times?” B “Oh, I am sorry I forget sending it to you last time To regret - To regret + to infinitive I regret to tell you that I not like you (I have not told you yet, I am going to tell you that I not like you.) - To regret + gerund I regret lending him some money (I have already lent him some money, and now I am sorry to that because he will never pay me back.) To allow/recommend/permit/advise - To allow/recommend/permit/advise + Object + to infinitive: He allows people to smoke here - To allow/recommend/permit/advise + gerund He allows smoking here 197 CONDITIONAL SENTENCES TENSES IN CONDITIONAL SENTENCES 1.1 To express facts, natural laws, use the simple present tense in both clauses If you heat water to 100oC, it boils 1.2 To express a true situation in the present/future, use the simple present in the if-clause and will + simple form in the result clause If I see him this afternoon, I will tell him about it 1.3 To express an untrue situation in the present/future, use past tense in the ifclause and would/could/might + simple form in the result clause If I were younger, I would apply for that position 1.4 To express an untrue situation in the past, use past perfect in the if-clause and would/could/might have + past participle in the result clause If they had had enough time, they would have seen a movie yesterday TENSES IN AS IF / I WISH / IT'S TIME CLAUSE 2.1 as if + S + subjunctive verb: To express an untrue situation, the verb in the as if clause should be subjunctive, as in I/you/she/he/it/they + were or I/you/she/he/it/they had + past participle Mary acted as if she were a teacher (Mary is not a teacher.) Nick spoke as if he had not known the time to meet me (Nick knew the time.) 2.2 Verb forms of the I wish clause: wish is used when the speaker wants something to be the opposite to reality or when one makes wishes about the future I wish you would walk faster (I want you to walk faster.) I wish my father were with me now (My father is not with me now.) I wish John had passed the exam (John didn't pass the exam.) 2.3 It's time that S + verb (past tense) It's time (that) you went to bed now NOTE: It's time is used to urge a person to something that is necessary 198 OMISSION OF IF When using should, were, or had at the beginning of the subordinate clause, then If can be omitted, provided that the subject and verb are inverted Should you agree to the offer, please sign the contract (If you agree ) Were I in your circumstance, I would not say so (If I were in your …) Had I been there at that moment, I would have helped you (If I had been ) SUBSTITUTES FOR IF CLAUSES 4.1 Verb…, and/or…: Here and means "if so," and or means "if not.” Speed up a little more, and we will catch his car Study hard for your test, or you won’t get a good grade NOTE: A comma should precede and/or when replacing if clauses 4.2 Otherwise (= if not), Or else We should hurry up; otherwise, we will be late Be careful, or else you will make a mistake 199 INVERSIONS AND QUESTIONS Inversion involves placing a modal verb before the subject of a sentence To understand inversion, we should first know how to change a sentence into a yes/no-question He is a friend of yours -» Is he a friend of yours? She can it -» Can she it? He has done it -» Has he done it? He came here yesterday -» Did he come here yesterday? You have some money -» Do you have any money? Inversion is obligatory when we place a negative adverb or adverbial phrase before the subject of a sentence In such a case, inversion is formed in exactly the same way as we form a yes/no-question, as in: He is never happy -» Never is he happy He can hardly it -» Hardly can he it He seldom talks with us -» Seldom does he talk with us The following is a list of negative adverbs, adverbial phrases, and adverbial clauses that are commonly used in English: Negative adverbs: never, hardly, scarcely, barely, seldom, rarely, little Negative adverbial phrases: by no means, under no circumstances, in no way, at no time, on no account, not only (including prepositional phrases preceded by only, such as only by doing so and only with your help) Under no circumstances should you cheat Only by working hard can you succeed Negative adverbial clauses: not until , no sooner… than…, only when…, hardly… when… Not until I left did I know I had left my wallet in the office = Only when I left did I know I had left my wallet in the office No sooner had they arrived home than it started to rain The following short responses also involve the use of inversion 3.1 In a negative sentence, we use the conjunction nor or the negative adverb neither He can't sing, nor can I = He can't sing, and neither can I = He can't sing, and I can't, either 3.2 In a positive sentence, we use the adverb so, as in: She is beautiful, and so are you = She is beautiful, and you are, too 200 Tag-Questions: There are two parts in a tag-question: a main clause and a question tag 4.1 Pattern Main Clause Question Tag S + V (positive form), auxiliary/modal verb + not + S ? (short form) She likes bananas, doesn’t she? She could swim when she was eight years old, couldn’t she? 4.2 Pattern Main Clause Question Tag S + V (negative form), auxiliary/modal verb + S ? You cannot swim, can you? She won’t come, will she? He hardly wants to go, does he? 4.3 Special cases 4.3.1 There is/there are/there have been, + … there? There is a computer in her office, isn’t there? There has never been a storm here so far, has there? 4.3.2 This/That/These/Those This is a table, isn’t it? Those are not your suitcases, are they? 4.3.3 Everyone, no one, nobody, someone, somebody, anyone, …  they? Everyone understands him, don’t they? No one could know what had happened, could they? 4.3.4 Everything, nothing, something, anything, …  it? Nothing is new, is it? Everything goes smoothly for you, doesn’t it? 4.3.5 Imperative:  will you? Open the door, will you? Don’t turn on the fan, will you? Let me go out with you tonight, will you? 4.3.6 Let’s (not) + V (bare infinitive) :  shall we? Let’s go out tonight, shall we? Let’s not talk about it any longer, shall we? Note: I think that he did not go to class yesterday, did he?
