UNIT 16: THE WONDERS OF THE WORLD Period : READING  Objectives By the end of the lesson students will be able to: + develop reading skill: guessing meanings in context and scanning for information. + use the information they have read to discuss the related topics.  Materials English textbook grade 11, blackboard.  Procedure Stage/Time Teacher’s activities Students’ activities WARM UP 10 mins Pictures describing - Show the pictures in turns then ask Ss to name the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World? Then put some questions: 1. When did people begin to know about the "Seven Wonders of the World"? 2. How many ancient wonders still exist? - Point at the pictures on the text book then put questions: 1. Can you name these two wonders of the world? 2. Where do you think they are located? 3. Who built the Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops)? 4. When were they built? 5. Can you guess how they were built? - Study the pictures and answer T’s questions: Expected answer 1. Colossus of Rhodes 2. Pharos of Alexandria (or Lighthouse of Alexandria 3.Temple of Artemis 4. Statue of Zeus 5. The Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops) 6. Mausoleum of Halicarnassus 7.Hanging Gardens of Babylon 1. WHILE- READING 20 mins Set the scene Task 1: Filling blanks - Instruct Ss to do Task 1. - Get Ss to do Task 1 individually - Tell Ss to peer-check - Call on Ss for their answer and explanation. Task 2: Answering questions - Guide Ss to answer questions: have a quick look at the questions, elicit the meaning on new words Ss may not know then ask Ss to locate the question and its answer. - Get Ss to do the task individually the check the answers with a peer. - Call on Ss for answers and location of the information. - Listen to what T guides. - Do Task 1 individually. - Raise their answers. POST- READING 7 mins - Have Ss discuss the question in groups then call on some Ss to present their ideas in front of class. Homework Ask Ss to learn new words by heart, practice reading the text and translate it into Vietnamese. - Discuss the question in groups then have their ideas presented in front of the class. UNIT 16: THE WONDERS OF THE WORLD Period : SPEAKING  Objectives By the end of the lesson students will be able to express facts and opinions.  Materials English textbook grade 11, blackboard.  Procedure Stage/Time Teacher’s activities Students’ activities WARM – Matching - Tell the instructions: work in pairs to do the task. The pair finishing first will - Listen to T’s instructions carefully then do the task in pairs. UP 10 mins go to the board and write down the answers. If all the answers are correct, the pair wins. Then distribute handouts. - Check the answers. - Write down these words, elicit the meanings and get Ss to pronounce correctly. Expected answer 1. e 2. k 3.a 4.h 5.i 6.b 7.c 8.d 9.f 10.g TASK 1,2 15 mins - Introduce Task 1. - Elicit the term ‘’ fact ‘’ and ‘’ opinion’’ ‘’ Fact’’: a situation that cannot be changed, accurate and detailed information. ‘’ Opinion ‘’: your feelings or thoughts about something. - Have Ss work in pairs to discuss which statements express facts (F) and which ones, opinions (O). - Call on Ss to read out the statements then show whether the statements are facts or opinions . - Listen to what T explains carefully. - Work in pairs and do the task. Expected answer TASK 3 - Introduce task 3 - Listen to T’s guidance carefully. Facts - The Great Pyramid was 147 meters high. - The Great Pyramid ranked as the tallest structure on earth for more than 43 centuries. - The structure consisted of approximately 2 million blocks of stone. Opinions - The great pyramid is believed to have been built over a 20 –year period. - One theory involves the construction of a straight or spiral ramp that was raised as the construction proceed. - A second theory suggests that the blocks were lifted and placed using thousands of huge weight arms. - The boat is believed to have been used to carry the body of Khufu in his last journey on earth before being buried inside the pyramid. 20 mins - Introduce some expressions to give opinions: + I my opinion/ in my view + I think that…… + I strongly believe that………. + well, I think that……… - Divide Ss into 4 big groups, each group will deal with one question. - Tell Ss to work in small groups of 3 then show their opinions using the suggestions in task 3. - Call on groups to present their opinions in front of the class. The pair finishing first comes to the board and writes down the answers. - Check the answers. - Listen to T’s instructions then work in pairs to find the words. - Give the answer: Influence, affect, destroy, endangered, effort, interfere, extinct, pollute, capture, exhaust, reserve, use, supply, mention, provide, admire, indulge, launch, trend, and entertain. PRE- LISTENING 7 mins Pictures matching - Ask Ss to look at these pictures put some questions: 1. What can you see in the picture? 2. Where do you think it is? 3. When do you think it was built? Under what Dynasty? 4. Do you know how long it is and how high it is? 5. Have you ever visited it? Task 2: Answering questions - Ask Ss to read through the questions and if they have any answers or ideas for the questions.
