Going Green at the Office

Statistics suggest that most adults spend between 36 and 45 hours a week working, yet few of them show much concern for the environment at their places of work This is especially negative if you consider that office buildings consume a quarter of the country's energy Here is a list of some of the things every employee can do to make a difference

Reduce Energy Consumption

Employees aren't the ones who pay the energy bill at the end of each month; employers are That's why many employees don't care about using less energy at work Whether at home or at work, reducing the energy bill seems to be the main incentive to use less energy, but keep in mind that wasting electricity does a lot of harm in general, regardless of where you are and who's paying the bill What can you do? Start by turning off all your equipment when you leave the office Just turning off a 75-watt desk lamp at night can save 750 pounds of carbon emissions a year Also remember that you use more energy when you use a screen saver on your PC than when you don't Moreover, your screen saver may also prevent your PC from switching into "economy power" mode when it's not being used However, the best and most economical rule of thumb is "if you're not using it, shut it down"

Consume in Your Own Cups

Being at the office for so many hours means that you will drink countless glasses of water and cups of coffee Bring your own personal mug from home which you can refill instead of using paper cups This will also add a personal touch to your workspace In addition, fill up your glasses at the water cooler; plastic water bottles have done unspeakable damage to our environment and should be avoided at all costs

Reduce Waste

Avoid printing anything that can stay on computer files If you must print documents, be sure to print on both sides of the sheet And make sure you recycle all plastic and paper waste Your company should have recycling bins placed

in convenient spots, but it is your own responsibility to use them Reduce Commuting
