A good deal of fascinating research has been done about the reading patterns of young

people, and it is surprising to discover at what an early age children start expressing preferences for particular kind of books A recent report, which examined in detail the reading habits of primary-school children showed that even seven-year-old boys and girls have clear views about what they want to read Girls, in general, read more, and far more girls than boys preferred reading stories Boys were showing a taste for the more instant appeal of picture stories, or else books about their hobbies

These tastes continue unchanged until the children are teenagers Apparently girls read more in general, but more fiction in particular You could say that there are more opportunities for girls to read fiction: magazines encourage the fiction habit in girls in their early teens, and by their late teens they have probably moved on to the adult women’s magazines Teenage boys tend to buy magazines about their hobbies: motorcycles, heavy transport and to on

Adult reading tastes are also the subject of research Again the number of women who read for pleasure is considerably higher than the number of men It seems that the majority

Until recently, humankind seemed to view the ocean as a source of infinite resources Its vast size and depth and unexplored frontiers made the ocean appear invulnerable to overexploitation The truth is that the populations of many species are decreasing at an unsustainable rate, and the number of species listed as endangered from marine life families such as whales, dolphins, manatees and dugongs, salmon, seabirds, sea turtles, and sharks to name a few, are on the rise The threats to marine species are difficult to perceive because marine animals are not as visible as animals on land But unfortunately, marine creatures are

equally, if not more, vulnerable to problems such as habitat destruction and

overexploitation Shallow water animals that breathe air, like turtles, manatees, dugongs, and whales are often hit by boats and caught in fishing gear Species such as turtles that lay their eggs on land often lose their nurseries due to coastal development Animals that have taken millions of years to evolve, that are invaluable to all ecosystems, have and continue to vanish

from places where they once flourished

Question 46: What is human’s perception of the ocean so far?

A The ocean resources will never be exhausted

B The ocean is capable of resisting overexploitation

C Both A & B are correct

D Neither of A & B is correct

Question 47: All of the following are true EXCEPT

A Turtles are a kind of shallow water animal

B The evolution of animals could take up to millions of years

C Powerful animals like sharks run less risk of endangerment

D Coastal development affects the reproduction process of some sea animals

Question 48: Which of the followings is closest in meaning to “vulnerable”?

A Weak B Resistant C Energetic D Adaptive

Question 49: What is the reason for the difficulty in understanding threats to marine life?

A That technology is underdeveloped

B That humans can hardly see marine creatures

C That the rate of population decrease is unsustainable

D That there are too many types of marine creatures in the ocean

Question 50: What does “flourished” in the passage mean?

A Failed miserably B Spread all over

C Grew in a successful way D Changed into something unusual

Reading to oneself is a modern activity which was almost unknown to the scholars of the

classical and medieval worlds, while during the fifteenth century the term “reading”

undoubtedly meant reading aloud Only during the nineteenth century did silent reading

become commonplace

One should very wary, however, of amusing that silent reading came about simply because

reading aloud was a distraction to others Examinations of factors related to the historical

development of silent reading have revealed that it became the unusual mode of reading for

most adults mainly because the tasks themselves changed in character

The last century saw a steady gradual increase in literacy and thus in the number of readers

As the number of readers increased, the number of potential listeners declined and thus

there was some reduction in the need of to read aloud As reading for the benefit of listeners grew less common, so came the flourishing of reading as a private activity in such public

places as libraries, railway carriages and offices, where reading aloud would cause

distraction to other readers Towards the end of the century, there was still considerable

arguments over whether books should be used for information or treated respectfully and

over whether the reading of materials such as newspapers was in some way mentally

weakening

Indeed, this argument remains with us still in education However, whatever its virtues, the

old shared literacy culture had gone and was replaced by the printed mass media on the one hand and by books and periodicals for specialized readership on the other By the end of the twentieth century, students were being recommended to adopt attitudes to books and to use reading skills which were inappropriate, if not possible, for the oral reader The social,

cultural and technological changes in the century had greatly altered what the term “reading” implied

33 Reading aloud was more common in the medieval world because…

A Few people could read to themselves

B There were few places available for private reading

C Silent reading had not been discovered

D People relied on reading for entertainment

34 The word “commonplace’ in the first paragraph mostly means

A Attracting attention C most referable

B For everybody’s use D wildly used

35 The development of silent reading during the last century indicated

A An increase in the number of books C a change in the status of literate

Trang 11

B An increase in the average age of readers D a change in the nature of reading

36 It can be inferred that the emergence of the mass media and specialized reading

materials was an indication of _

A A decline of standards of literacy C a change in the status of literate people

B An increase in the average age of readersD a change in the nature of reading

37 The phrase “a specialized readership” in para 4 mostly means

A A status for readers specialized in mass media

B A limited number of readers in a particular area of knowledge

C A requirement for readers in a particular area of knowledge

D A reading volume for particular professionals

38 All the following may be the factors that affected the continuation of the old shared

literacy culture EXCEPT

A The inappropriate reading skills C the diversity of reading material

B The printed mass media D the specialized readership

39 Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE according to the passage?

A Reading aloud was more common in the past than it is today

B The decline of reading aloud was wholly due to its distracting effect

C The change in reading habits was partly due to the social, cultural and

technological changes

D Not all printed mass media was appropriate for reading aloud

40 The writer of this passage is attempting to

A Show how reading methods have improved

B Explain how reading habits have developed

C Change people’s attitudes to reading

D Encourage the growth of reading
