Defining and non defining Relative clauses: - Give Sts two pairs of sentences and ask them to use Relative pronoun who or which to combine them. 1. The Novel has been lost. You Gave me the novel on my birthday. → The Novel which you gave me on my birthday has been lost 2. Vietnam exports rice. Vietnam is in the Southeast Asia. → Vietnam, which is in the Southeast Asia, exports rice - Help Sts distinguish between defining and non – defining Relative clauses Trong câu 1 nếu ta lược bỏ phần mệnh đề tính ngữ thì tiền ngữ The Novel sẽ không rỏ nghĩa,người đọc sẽ không hiểu. Trong câu 2 nếu ta lược bỏ phần mệnh đề tính ngữ thì tiền ngữ vẫn rỏ nghĩa. Note: ở mệnh đề tính ngữ xá định (Defining relative clauses) đạI từ quan hệ làm túc từ có thể được tỉnh lược. - Defining Relative clauses identify nouns, these clauses tell us which person or thing the speaker means - Non – defining Relative clauses give more information about a person or thing already identified. When we write these clauses, T – whole class Do as request Write Listen Listen and repeat Write Do as request Write and listen Distinguish Listen and write NGUY ỄN HỮU TÌNH THCS LÊ ĐÌNH CHINH Practice 10 min Production 10 min Homework 5 min we put commas at the beginning of the clauses ( and often at the end of the clause ) - We can not use “that” in a non – defining Relative clauses. - In a non – defining Relative clause we can not leave out who or which Recognizing non – defining Relative clauses: - Have Sts to do Exer in Language focus 3 on page 82. -Ask Sts to underline the Relative clause in each sentence, then add commas to separate the non defining Relative clause from the rest of the sentence - Get Sts to work in pairs, then ask some Sts to write the sentences on the board. - Give feedback and correct mistakes. Give marks (if possible) * Answer keys: b. Kangaroos, which come from Australia, have long tails c. Ba, who lives in Trang Tien Street, likes playing the guitar d. The Novel that you gave me on my birthday has been lost e. Neil Armstrong, who first walked on the moon, lives in the USA f. Mrs Lien, who sings very well, is my English teacher III. Matching: - Have Sts do the Exer in Lang 2 on page 81 – 82 - Ask Sts to match each of the sentences in column A with a related sentence in column B, then use a suitable relative pronoun to join them. - Get Sts to work in individual, then share with their partners * Answer keys: 1. e 2. g 3. f 4. a 5. c 6. d 7. b * Writing: - Have Sts rewrite the sentences in Lang focus 3 on page 82 - Ask Sts to replace each underlined clause with or their own clause - Let Sts use facts or their imagination E.X: a. Kangaroos, which is called “ chuot tui” in Vietnamese, have long tails ……………………………………………………. - Have Sts write some more (about 5 sentences) with non- defining Relative clauses.
