Dad: I remember the time I went/was going to Brazil There was a big famine in that country by that time we went/ were going Your mom and I, however, had/were having enough money to stay at an expensive hotel where there was enough food for us I got tired of seeing poor people starving to death, so some friends and I decided to go to the Amazona River to wait for rich people to pass by I remember that we hid/were hiding behind some trees when we were seeing/saw some rich people coming We took advantage of it, and we stole/were stealing a lot of money and gave/were giving it to poor people I really was feeling/felt as if I were Robin Hood Noah: Daddy, who is Robin Hood? Dad: Robin Hood is a character who was stealing/stole from the rich and gave to the poor Noah: Oh, I see Dad: Then, I remember when we were going/went to The Philippines It was really awesome because we suffered/were suffering all kinds of disasters over there Noah: Like what? Dad: Picture this: We spent months in that country During our fist month, there was a flood that destroyed/was destroying lots of houses and was killing/killed several people I remember firefighters running all over the place carrying out their evacuation plan and taking people to an emergency shelter The following month, there was an earthquake that caused/was causing several mudslides, as the soil from the volcanoes was still really wet In fact, one of the aftershocks originated in the sea, and that caused a great tsunami The last month we were staying/ stayed there was characterized by a drought that almost killed us It was way too hot! Noah: Daddy, I didn’t know you had gone through that! Dad: And there is more Five years ago, your mom and I went skiing to Argentina, and we experienced the worst blizzard ever right when we were having/had a lot of fun But it doesn’t stop there We also had an avalanche!!! Noah: Oh, is that the time when you didn’t know anything about mom? Dad: Yes, I really freaked out that time because I talked/was talking to her on the phone when the avalanche occurred We lost communication, and I didn’t know how she was doing/did afterwards! I was talking/talked to the police officers when she finally showed up at my cabin She was alright –what a relief! […] Noah! Noah! Post the flashcards on the board and have students look at them After one minute, hide the pictures and ask them what people on the flashcards were doing If they can’t remember allow another minute for them to look at them again Ask again… Recognition Activity (25 minutes) Hand in a copy of the reading to your students Read it with them and then have them underline the correct structure in each sentence Once they have done so, ask them to identify the natural disasters the story talks about If they don’t know the meaning, hand in a copy of the natural disasters chart Their job now will be to match the words with their correspondent meaning Noah: Daddy, I can’t sleep!
