THIRD OFFICER’S DUTIES Navigation watch Keep navigation watch in the Bridge: 0800-1200, 2000-2400 - Carry out noon calculation, including as follows: + Time, distance of detention and shifting (if have) + Hour under way, Distance + Hour’s propelling, distance, average speed + Speed Log readings & reset - Getting Gyro Err every watch, if impossible please write down on Ship Log Book - Maintain and adjust ship’s clocks Time adjustment is to be carried out at 2100 hrs (Ship’s Mean Time) Correct all clocks’ error to nil by radio signal & record to Chronometer Journal (Note: time adjustment should be done at or minutes past 2100 due to requirement of engine’s data logger) After adjust second of the clock at the Bridge, Radio space, Ballast control room, Engine control room and other public space (this should be done at least once every voyage) - Record Ship’s Log Book, Radar, and VHF Log Book Sanitary Log, Medical Log & Panama Log - Calculate Sun rise/set time every day & record on the bridge white board - Print out the current and tide table (including: Sunrise, Sunset, Moon Age) of arrival port (leave copy in the Bridge, for Capt., for A/B and copy in ship’s office) - Every day, (if possible), at 0030 hrs, fire and safety patrol must be carried out by duty A/B, inspecting from Bridge to lower floor of Engine Room and then recording in the Safety Patrol Check List - After night duty in the Bridge, you must check Steering Room and the same above place yourself to find out any abnormal events (oil leakage, oil temperature, etc) - Check all on deck lights before ship’s arrival port (Deck lights, wing lights, outer passage light, green flashing light, steering light, anchor lights, manoeuvring light, etc that must be carried at night Time after Eng Dept checked of insulation - Check gyro compass error regularly by observing landmarks, Sun or stars, etc then record it into the Ship’s Log Book and Gyro Record Book Page of Entering port, shifting & leaving port - Station in the Bridge during S/B time - Complete checking all items in the Bridge Check List - Set microphone, speaker for on board communication test onboard communication in order (Transceivers, Talkback system and whistle S/B, switch on “T/B” & “Outside” In emergency circumstances, press “EM’CY” button together with “outside” button to switch on all speakers of the system) - Prepare charts, pencils that must be always sharp, dividers, and binoculars, Bellbook, take out wing Repeater-compass covers & synchronize them - Prepare signal flags (eg: Pilot flags, black cylinders, berthing/departure signals, fairway signals required in the waters where Marine Safety Law is applicable) - Check all equipments in the Bridge and stand by them (Radar, VHF, Echo-sounder, outside bridge indicators’, etc ,) - Record all information required on the bridge white board, such as tide, current, ship’s draft etc , - Prepare Pilot card, prepare Ship’s Particulars Table - Test steering gear together with 2/O (Before Departure / Shifting time about 45 minutes) Before test steering gear inform to Engine room for start steering motor - Test M/E condition (Make sure Fore and Aft station ready for “try engine”) Check Telegraph Logger Note Report to Captain: Engine, steering gear condition or any problems happened as soon as the preparation has been completed Confirm FWD and AFT before start and finish try eng - Control engine telegraph following Captain’s orders - Record all S/B details in the Bell Book - Assist Captain and quickly carry out his orders Especially look out and ship position - Advice C/O, 2/O in case of necessary - Confirm with Captain Time of S/B Eng., Arrival and Departure time - Complete all checklists - After arrived anchorage and after berthing, measure sea density gravity (SG) at the Anchorage and at the Berth Also check draft gauge, level gauge of WBT and record it - Make Condition Report (Condition Report must be confirmed by C/O before sending to Captain, make copies for Capt, copy put in the “Condition Report file” kept on the bridge, copy put in “Condition Report file” kept in ship office) Page of Cargo handling watch - Duty time will be arranged by C/O: + At loading port: 0600-1200, 1800-2400 + At discharging port: 0600-0800, 1800-2400 Note, when operating ballast pump: + Make sure Hydraulic Pump is started before opening and closing remote control valves (Change working hydraulic pumps every hours) + Much attention should be paid to oil pressure while opening and closing valves (Indicator must be within the Green Mark) + Before using ballast pump, pipelines must be lined up safely Adjust pressure properly following C/O’s Cargo Plan +At discharging port, check ship’s condition (Draft and cargo discharged, remaining cargo and discharging rate) at 0700 every day or as per C/O’s order Order 0400-0800 A/B on duty to check FW & DW figures in order to obtain “On Hand” figures Especially, at Oita, draft check every morning at 0600, because of Shore figure will be done at this time - After completed discharging cargo in each Cargo Hold, carry out damage-check for cargo hold - Pay attention to Oil leakage from Hydraulic System on Deck - Check mooring condition when ship stay at berth as same as position of berthing All access to store, Accommodation doors should be lock up - Other duty will be ordered by C/O Anchor & Drifting watch - C/O arranges anchor & drifting watch, please follow the order Page of Other duties - Record ship’s Log Book with manoeuvring information - Manage Deck inventory & Ship’s store Check Locker & stores every end of month, and then record in the Ship’s Store Records Book - Take sight observation to find ship’s position at least once a month whenever you can - Manage ship’s flags - Duties when carrying out on board drills: S/B in the Bridge & assist Captain in commander team (For details please consult “Muster List”) - Prepare Customs document for Capt when ship arrival port (Australia, Japan, etc ,) - Carry out weekly inspection for Life saving appliance and Fire fighting appliance system by C/O order - Carry out monthly inspection for Life saving appliance and Fire fighting appliance system by C/O order - Check EEBD condition every month and record to EEBD condition check sheet - Seal up restricted areas following C/O’s order before entering port: Fire Station, Life boat (Port & Starboard), Engine Escape Trunk (2nd Deck & Tank Top) - Make cash advance for Japanese yen, bond order for Viet Nam crew, and remake muster list, ID card, telephone, room card, whenever ship has new crew Page of
