UNIT 15 : SPACE CONQUEST SPEAKING Task 1: work in pairs, read the following piece of news, then ask and answer the questions: On 15 th October in 2003 , China launched its first manned spacecraft into space. The spacecraft was called ‘Shenzhou 5’. Yang Liwei China’s first astronaut, was 38 years old then. The successful flight marked a milestone in China’s space project. China became the third country in the world to be able to independently carry out manned space flight 1. How many countries in the world have been able to carry out independently manned space activities? What are they? - Three countries. They are Russia, the USA, and China. 2. When did China launch its first manned spacecraft into space? - On 15 th October in 2003. 3. What was the spacecraft called? - Shenzhou 5. 4. What is the astronaut’s name? - Yang Liwei. 5. How old was he when he flew into space? - 38 years old. 6. How important was the successful flight to China? - It marked a milestone in China’s space project. Shenzhou 5 .Use preposition : .“on” with day in year . Ex: On 4 th October in 1957 .“in” with year and month. Ex: In 2003 .Use simple past to talk about the event which happened in the past Ex: On 4 th October in 1957, the first satellite was launched into space. .Use passive voice : be + past participle Ex: The first artificial satellite Sputnik was made by the USSR. .Use some transitions or conjunctions to link the ideas: First, next, after that, then… Task 2 : Work in groups, take turns to talk about the important events in space exploration 4 th October,1957 .first artificial satellite: Sputnik . Mark beginning of Space Age .made by the USSR  On 4 th October, 1957 the first artificial satellite “Sputnik”, which was made by the USSR, was launched into space. First human in space .Yuri Gagarin, Russian cosmonaut . 27 years old .108-minute flight  After that, on 12 th April 1961, Yuri Gagarin, a 27-year-old Russian cosmonaut, became the first human in space. His flight lasted 108 minutes. Gagarin died in a plane crash on a routine training flight in March in 1968. After his death, his hometown of Gzhatsk was renamed Gagarin, and the Cosmonaut Training Center at Start City, Russia, was given the name of this national hero. Gagarin’s funeral in Moscow. 16 th June, 1963 .first woman in Space .Valentina Tereshkova, Russain cosmonaut  Then on 16 th June1963, Valentina Tereshkova, a Russian cosmonaut, became the first woman in space.
