Cacao có tên khoa học là Theobroma cacao L., một loại cây nhiệt đới được người Maya trồng cách đây hơn hai ngàn năm. Theobroma cacao L. có nguồn gốc từ Trung Mỹ, ngày nay được trồng phổ biến ở Brazil, Ghana, Indonesia, Malaysia và một số nước ở lưu vực sông Amazone (Juan Carlos Motamayor, 1999).
