Lesson Plan (grade 11 – advanced) Period 113 : Preparation date : 30 /3/2011 Unit14 : Lesson : Space Conquest –Reading (cont) I. Aims : - By the end of the lesson, the students are able to skim for general ideas. - By the end of the lesson, the students are able to scan for specific details. II. Lexical items : - architect - propose - complex - domed structure - surface - excursion - vast - frontier III. Structures : -Moon buses may transport guests on low gravity excursion IV. Teaching aids: - textbook - picture / drawings - chalk - handouts V. Techniques : - Skill – based ( reading, speaking) VI. Procedures : State/time Teacher’s and students’ activities Blackboard Materials 1. Warm- up & lead- in (7’) Checking Vocabulary: “Rub out and remember” - rub out the words and leave the explanations on the board. - point at each explanation and have SS speak out the word - again, point at any explanation ( not in the order written on the board) and have SS to call Period 113 : photocopies Transition: to understand more clearly about the text, today we’ll learn the comprehension - write down on the board: Unit :14 Space Conquest – reading (cont) Chalk and board. 2. Pre- reading (10’) Summarize the main ideas of p1 and p2 - call on a St to summarize the text which they learnt last time - comment and correct them out the word. 1.Brainstorming -Ask SS the following question to elicit vocabulary about the Chalk and board topic: ‘What do you know about space exploration?’ -Tell SS to write down words in the mind map. People Equipment Yuri Gagarin Space Spacesuit Exploration Country Achievement USA Other spacewalk NASA Checking General Knowledge ( task a, p. 192) -Read the question in task a and ask SS to choose the best answers to each question. - Check with the whole class. 3. while - reading (20’) Activity 1: Questions and answers (task b, p. 193 ) -Tell SS to read the text again and find the answers to the questions. - Ask Ss to work with a partner, ask and answer the questions. -Call on pairs to ask and answer them and check with the whole class. Activity 2: Which This is the handout: Read the text and write A, B or C beside each question. Which section mentions: A space station for holiday makers? Surveys on the demand for space Chalk + book + small board Section? Which information? -Put SS into pairs and give out handouts of pieces of information from the passage. -Ask SS read the text and answer the questions by writing the section which mentions the piece of information in the space provided. -Tell SS to compare answers in small groups and then go over the answers with the class. Expected answers: 1.B 2.A 3.B 4.C 5.A 6.B 7.C 8.B tourism? The price of c ticket into space? A hotel powered by solar energy? The percentage of people who wish to travel into space? A hotel that orbits the Earth? The use of lunar ice for drinking water? The space trip taken by two Japanese businessmen? 4. Post- reading (10’) Discussion -Arrange SS to work in small groups of 4 or 5. - Ask them discuss the following questions: a. If affordable, would you like to take a space trip? Why? Why not? b. Where would you go? c. How long would you stay there? d. What would you to there? - go around monitor and give help if necessary. - call on SS to report about their groups’ and invite to give comments. . textbooks 5.
