Lesson Plan (grade 11 – advanced) Period :40 Preparation date : 24/10/2011 Unit : 5 Lesson : writing I. Aims : - By the end of the lesson, the students are able to write a letter to ask for information. - By the end of the lesson, the students are able to write a letter to give information II. Lexical items : -Deadline -Stipulate -Precise -Eligible III. Structures : - I am writing to clarify several of the regulations of the contest. - This is a reminder for us to be more specific and precise. IV. Teaching aids: - textbook - handouts - Sheets of paper - chalk and board V. Techniques : - writing-based - Procedures : State/time Teacher’s and students’ activities Blackboard Materials 1. warm- up (6’-8’) Game: “Save the Princess” -Draw on the board a cave with ways down , the princess is down in the cave. -Divide the class into two groups: Thach Sanh and the moster.(Stick the pictures on the two mouths/ openings of the cave.) -Read :This is form the King : “ The princess has disappeared . Anyone who - Drawings -Chalk & board can find and save her will be allowed to marry her and become the next King of the nation.” -Then tell SS to save the princess , they have to read out a 12-letter word by guessing the letters. -The groups take turns to guess the letters ,with a correct letter , they get one step down the cave , if they are faster and can get to the princess and save her ,i.e. read the key word, they will win the game. - Ask SS where they can get information about a competition or contest. (Expected: on TV, the radio -Chalk & board , in newspapers ,on Web sites,…) -Ask SS if they want to enter a competition , what kind of information they need to know about it . Give prompts to elicit if necessary. Expected: +Place and time +Preparations +All requirements needed of contestants, -Ask SS : “If you want to apply , but there is something you’re not sure of , what do you do?” Expected: To call the organizer and ask for more details./ To write a letter to ask for more information. Transition:-Yes, one way is to write a letter to ask for more information. Today we will learn how to write such a letter , and also how to write a letter to give information. -Write down on the board: 2. Pre- writing (4’-5’) Unit 5: Writing a Letter to Ask for or Give Information Activity 1: Re-ordering (task b,p71-72) -Tell SS the sentences belong to a letter asking for information about a contest but they are in the wrong order. -textbook (3’-4’) -Ask SS to work in pairs and put the sentences in a logical order. -Get SS to compare answers in small groups and the go over the answers with the class. Expected answer: c-d-a-e-i- f-g-h Activity 2:Sequence markers -Ask SS to read the letter again and discuss how the underline words may have helped them. Expected :-To recognize what comes first and what’s next or to recognize the order of things easier. -textbook -Cards -Tell SS words like fist , second, next,…and last / finally are sequence markers used to show the order of things to make it easier to follow. Activity 3:Matching and co-ordering -Arrange SS to word in 5 groups. -Give each group two sets of cards , one with phrases used in a letter asking for information , and the order with the headings for the parts of the letter (Appendix 1a) -Ask SS to work in their groups , match the phrases with the headings and then -textbook -Chalk & board put them in a logical order of the letter. -Go over the answer with the class and introduce the general format of a letter asking for information .Expected answer: (Appendix 1b) Letters to ask for information can be organized as follows: 1. Opening/Greeting 2. Purpose of letter (why you are writing it) 3. List of things that need clarifying 4. Closing and ending -Form the format of this letter , elicit from SS the format of a letter giving information. -Give prompts to help SS: a. How do you start in reply to the letter asking for more information? (Expected: Saying thank- you( for making questions)) b .What do you do about the information that needs to be clarified? (Expected :Give explanation can be organized like this: 1.Opening/ Greeting 2.Thanks for letter (Thanks for asking question,….) 3.List of explanations or clarifications of information asked about 4.Closing and ending 3. while- writing (14’-15’) Writing A Letter to Give Information (Task c,p.72) -Ask SS to work in small groups and write a letter to give information in reply to the letter in task b,p.71 , based on the prompts given and using the format just learned. -Go around to control and give help if necessary. -When they have finished , collect SS’ writing for correction later. - Textbook -Sheets of paper .
