A healthy lifestyle is a conscious way of living, ensuring balance and harmony between body and mind There are many reasons why it is important to have a healthy lifestyle, here are some examples:

Improve health: A healthy lifestyle includes a balanced diet, regular physical activity and minimizing stress This helps strengthen the immune system, reduce the risk of diseases and protect the body from negative effects

Increase work productivity: A healthy lifestyle helps improve concentration, memory and thinking ability When your body and mind are properly nourished, you will have abundant energy and higher work performance

Improve mood and increase happiness: Physical activity and a healthy diet have the ability to stimulate the production of brain chemicals such as endorphins, serotonin and dopamine, which help create a feeling of happiness and reduce stress

Prevent disease: A healthy lifestyle helps reduce the risk of diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and other illnesses This can help you live longer and improve your quality of life

Trang 7

Create a good environment for development: If you have a healthy lifestyle, you can convey these positive values to your family and

surrounding community This can create a good environment for everyone's growth and happiness

In short, having a healthy lifestyle brings many benefits to your health and mental state It helps you live a life full of energy, happiness and worth living

B What should we do?

B.1 Healthy diet.

B.1.1 What is a healthy diet?

A healthy and nutritious diet is essential for good health It protects us from chronic non-communicable diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer Eating a variety of foods and consuming less salt, sugar and fat are essential requirements for a healthy diet

B.1.2 Why a balanced diet?

Sometimes we eat because we enjoy the taste and experience of different foods Sharing food and meals are important social events But other than for pleasure, we need food to get nutrients, vitamins, minerals and energy Very few foods are either all good or all bad By having an idea of the balance in your diet, it should be easier to enjoy food and be healthy

B.1.3 Seven essential factors for a balanced diet

Trang 8

B.1.3.1 Carbs: Simple and complex

- Complex carbs (wholewheat flour and pasta, and brown rice) makes you feel full for longer, helping to control your appetite

- Refined complex carbs (white flour, pasta and rice) are digested more quickly by the body

- Simple carbs are the sugars These can be natural (e.g fructose found in fruit) or refined (e.g sucrose or glucose in soft drinks, sweets and biscuits) B.1.3.2 Fat: Saturated and unsaturated

- Dietary fat produces hormones and other signalling molecules and is a source of energy and energy storage

- Two categories of dietary fat are saturated and unsaturated They have the same amount of calories but different effects on your health

- Saturated fats are generally solid at room temperature and these are the fats that will have a negative impact on our health (e.g butter, hard cheeses, fatty meat and meat products, cream, lard, suet, coconut oil, palm oil )

- Unsaturated fats include the polyunsaturated, monounsaturated and Omega

3 fats (e.g oil olive, rapeseed and sunflower )

B.1.3.3 Protein

- Protein is a source of energy It is essential in maintaining the function of all cells in the body

- Protein is made up by complex combinations of 22 amino acids Ten of these amino acids can only be obtained by diet

Trang 9

- Although protein is an essential part of your diet, this is also only needed in moderation

B.1.3.4 Dietary fibre: soluble and insoluble

- Soluble fibre changes how other nutrients are absorbed in the digestive system Insoluble fibre is not metabolised and absorbs water itself

- Soluble fibre regulates blood sugar levels and balances intestinal pH levels

- Insoluble fibre helps with digestion and elimination by speeding up the passage of food in the digestive system

B.1.3.5 Vitamins

- Vitamins are complex organic substances found in our food which support almost every system in the body, including the immune system, the brain and the nervous system

- Vitamins K and D cannot be manufactured by the body and must come from our food

- To get more vitamins into your diet, try and eat foods as fresh and unprocessed as possible

B.1.3.6 Minerals

Minerals are elemental substances and are found in the soil They are absorbed by plants, which we eat or are eaten by animals – which we then eat Therefore we can get minerals from both animal and vegetable sources B.1.3.7 Water

Trang 10

- Our body is made up of around 65% water, it assists with absorption, digestion, excretion and aids circulation of nutrients around our body

- On average a Man (70 kg) should be drinking 2.5 litres a day, a Women (58 kg) should be drinking 2.2 litres of water a day and for children (10 kg Child) 1 litre and a Child (5 kg) should be drinking 0.75 litres a day

- Many foods that we eat particularly fruit and vegetables contain high amounts of water
