Trang 3It is human nature to yearn for comfort From time immemorial, humankind has always been progressing at a level far beyond any other species so as to better our lives Our ancient ancestors crafted simple tools to overcome the obstacles and survive in prehistoric times, before long establishing
themselves as the apex predator of the food chain, and gradually becoming the de facto species to dominate Earth Since then, we have incessantly been improving our technology, dragging ourselves out of the Dark Ages and into the Renaissance; boosting our means of production within three Industrial Revolutions spanning three centuries, all to create more riches and fulfill our materialistic needs But with the coming of the fourth Industrial Revolution, or Industry 4.0, no longer do we solely focus on the growth of our economy, but rather expand our interest in elevating the Human Condition And that is why, when discussing the rapid growth of technology, we cannot overlook its enormous footprint on healthcare, communication and
education, as well as how it significantly improves our lives
A HEALTHCARE:
1 Accessible medical equipment
Technology has become so prevalent in our times that not only do cutting- edge medical equipment appear in hospitals but also in most of our
household, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic We can easily find plenty of detectors, thermometers, etc around us, yet there are many more inventions that are changing the lives of millions of people, which will be presented accordingly in this section
Wheelchairs are crucial to people who have to cope with paralysis or are too physically weak to walk on their own However, the traditional wheelchair poses many difficulties in practical use, as it leaves the patient dependent on other people Thus, the electric wheelchair was born These battery-powered wheelchairs have the speed like normal bicycles, and can last for at least 8 hours of use Equipped with this new mode of transport, confined patients can traverse easily between terrains, and even ascend wheelchair ramps without the accompaniment of family or social workers
Having auditory difficulties is definitely not a comfortable experience, yet, according to WHO, as of April 1st 2021, 5% of the world’s population suffer from permanent hearing impairment But with the invention of hearing aid equipment, now they don’t have to guess what the other conveys through their body gestures or their lips movement anymore Whilst the first hearing
Trang 4aid was invented in 1876, technological breakthroughs in the 21st century, for example Artificial Intelligence translator, leaves the door open for more opportunities to integrate these features into this life-changing tool
Color vision deficiency has long been a nuisance to those who suffer from this condition, because it derives fun from life as well as prompting many imminent fatal dangers It wasn’t until the early 2010s that the first models
of glasses for color blind people were manufactured, bringing a new outlook
on life to the color-blind people Many videos were also uploaded after the introduction of the invention, showing the ecstatic reactions of the users The reaction was widely shared via the Internet and not only does it spread positivity and happiness along, it also brings hope to those who are afflicted with malignant conditions like cancer, cardiovascular diseases that one day someone will come up with a solution for all of them
As mentioned by the Keynote coursebook, Kenneth Shinozuka designed a simple but smart device to keep his grandfather with Alzheimer's safe Similar to Kenneth's story, the tools mentioned above all came to existence due to the necessity to help the disabled get on their feet and lead a normal, productive life The source of inspiration may come from things surrounding
us in our daily life, and technology enables us to turn imagination into reality
2 Health apps (ISOFHCARE)
We all know that health is one of the top priorities of people However, people now cannot go to the medical facilities too often because of the danger of the COVID - 19 pandemic, especially during the lockdown So, what should we do if we have any health problems when we cannot go outside? Don't worry, because we now have the help of technology There are many apps that connect people with the doctors when staying at home, and the one | want to show you today is ISOFHCARE
This is a Vietnamese medical app which provides information and advice about health to people You can download it for free from Google Play or the App Store After opening it, you will see that not only does it have a very simple and easy to use interface but the app also has many useful features The first one is making an appointment for treatment, healthcare or testing COVID-19 You can choose the time and the way you want to have the medical examination, you can either choose to go to the hospital or stay at home and make a video call with the doctors Then, you will be guided by the
Trang 5Customer service After you finish, ISOFHCARE will show a list of all the appointments you have booked so that you can follow them more easily Next, you can ask doctors about your problems at home by the consultation function It connects you and the specialists of major hospitals to answer all your questions or concerns about your health quickly and in a timely manner You just need to write your concerns in the app and wait for the response from the doctors, which is completely free
Another amazing function of this app is that you can access your medical examination data anytime, anywhere by your phone The electronic medical record function will store all health records (including test results, imaging results, physical examination results, prescriptions ) and update
immediately on your smartphone It means that you just have to bring your phone whenever you go to the hospital or medical facilities
ISOFHCARE is developing the function of predicting covid through coughs, which is extremely useful at this time This project has the participation of many technology experts and uses Al technology The Al will compare your cough with the coughs of people with COVID-19 If it detects similarities in your cough and that of the sick person, you may have COVID-19 In the future, this will be a low-cost COVID-19 screening solution that can be quickly deployed on a large scale to reduce the pressure on mass testing operations
In addition, the study of cough sounds may suggest the diagnosis of many other respiratory conditions
Finally, ISOFHCARE has daily health newsletters providing knowledge about health, nutrition, diseases and news in the medical field Each article is less than 10 minutes to read but provides a lot of useful knowledge that may help you in your life
3 Virtual Reality in physical therapy
Should you finish marveling at the wonders of contemporary sciences, let us venture into the near future, where advanced technology is to further aid us
in the medical field It is often forgotten that virtual reality is not only praised for its recreational purposes, but also for its applications in healthcare Virtual reality can be used in a myriad of ways, from providing medical students with firstfihand experience on human anatomy or rapid response procedures, to rehabilitation therapy, but it is the latter of which that will be the topic of discussion in this section
Trang 6Virtual reality indubitably reigns supreme among other audiovisual media, as
it immerses the users inside a computer-generated environment, essentially eliminating any distractions that may interfere with their experience Although the users may initially be aware that what they see in the virtual world is not real, they will slowly lose their grasp of the world beyond the headsets and become virtually immune to external elements, including harmful stimuli such as stress, depression and pain This is because the human brain struggles to distinguish the two realities, as the other senses are confined to the program, consequently making the patients
subconsciously accept the input as “real” The patient can even change programs freely in order to choose their preferable content and thus maximize their experience This is why virtual reality is gaining its traction
in treating intellectually disabled patients, alleviating symptoms of mental disorders such as depression, PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress
Disorder) as well as facilitating therapy for certain phobias by means of exposure therapy
A major merit of implementing virtual reality in physiotherapy is that it can help patients, especially children, to stay engaged in these
therapeutic activities Thanks to the aforementioned ability to create total sensory immersion, the virtual reality technology enables us to interact with the surroundings within the simulation, consequently making the patients invest more in corrective exercises It is these interactions that help patients easily tackle rehabilitative exercises For example, those who suffer from chronic vertigo can recalibrate their vestibular system
by viewing moving objects in their headsets while maintaining their balance;
or burnt-out college students may ease their back pains by challenging their strength and durability in the virtual world In a way, VR can motivate patients to move in a way they — and their therapists — didn’t think they could
While VR can help patients recover much quicker, it also entails the possibility of further injuries and other complications That is why now most VR provides clinicians with a valuable stream of data collected during the session, which could then be used to closely monitor how well the patients accomplished, thus allowing suitable tweaks to be made For example, if a patient finds the exercise causing pain or intolerable, the therapists can adjust the application to a lower range of motions so as to avoid injuries and other complications
Trang 7As time progresses, many life-threatening maladies have been eradicated, simply with the discoveries and breakthroughs within the field of medical sciences Assuming everything goes well as we mature as a species, the word “was” will steadily propagate throughout our encyclopedias Perhaps, when the distant future inevitably becomes the present, some of our children, while doing research for their school project, will fall down the rabbit hole of a future incarnation of Wikipedia and stumble upon obscure and long forgotten diseases, only to find all the descriptions in a perfect, wonderful past tense
B COMMUNICATION:
Thanks to technological advances, new trends in communications continue
to emerge and quickly become the norm in our everyday lives For better or worse, technology has drastically changed the way we interact with each other and entertain ourselves Through these digital advancements, we now have more options to choose from, including but not limited to video chats, online meetings, instant messaging and social networking sites
With this in mind, here’s a breakdown of the evolution of communication systems in modern times, plus how these developments have radically improved our lives:
1 The Internet
The Internet has revolutionized the way we interact with one another, including the rise of electronic mail, discussion forums, blogs, and social networking
These digital methods have allowed us to stay in contact with people, regardless of time and location It’s faster and more cost-effective than other traditional means of communication we once used Furthermore, it also prompts people to express themselves through social media, YouTube and share funny moments together in the form of memes or short clips That way, the Internet has truly connected people all over the world
2 Apps and tools
Perhaps, the most remarkable development that has improved the way we communicate is video chats, messages and online conferences There are a variety of apps and tools that not only streamline communications but also make interactions more meaningful
Trang 8With the outbreak of Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) coupled with social distancing measures, face-to-face communication suddenly became a thing
of the past Therefore, all activities have to be carried out online with the help of many apps and tools like the following:
@ Slack, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams are great examples of video
conferencing at its finest These platforms allow us to hold virtual meetings and manage tasks more effectively, especially for business
@ Skype and Facetime are two of the most popular ways for personal video chats with family members or friends We can now start chatting via video with our family members living miles apart within seconds without worrying about any of these fees
@ Messenger, WhatsApp Or WeChat can help us send unlimited text
messages with emojis or images, enjoy group chats and even free video calls just from our web browser
3 Smart devices
Ten years ago, the idea that you could make a video call from an item other than a phone would have been considered unreal Now, with smartwatches, smartphones, and other emerging wearable technology, these capabilities are a part of our daily lives For personal use, these smart devices make it easier and quicker to multitask, which means making phone calls, checking the weather, surfing the Internet and a lot more stimulating activities to do in just one small device
4 Social media
Nowadays, there are a total of 2.9 billion social media users worldwide, which constitutes over a third of the world’s population Social media is a
commonplace platform for communication and entertainment Some popular
social media include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, WhatsA pp, etc
Through social media, we can stay in touch with others easily For instance, it only takes 5 seconds to send a text, DM to a friend living in far-flung places
Or we can catch up on our friends’ lives by watching their stories and new profile updates on Instagram
Moreover, these sites are also where we stay up-to-date with the latest news
in the world We tend to get instant updates directly through our newsfeed This trend has had the most impact on the millennial generation, of which_ 40% say they rely on digital outlets for their news
Trang 9Additionally, social media with its live feed features has broken down barriers and made it possible for us to virtually immerse in new cultures and travel to exotic places around the world
5.VR
VR has been used in many fields VR brings us to places we have never dreamed of, do things we never thought would be possible and give us unprecedented experiences For business purposes, it helps companies give virtual tours of the workplace, train new employees, and develop products, etc For example, it allows them to check a prototype without developing a lot of versions first
In the healthcare industry, virtual reality also helps treat people with mental health issues by creating calming environments and simulations
Likewise, in Education: From elementary schools to universities, VR has emerged as an attractive avenue to deliver lectures that create an
immersive learning experience for students
6 5G
After years of waiting, fifth generation (5G) wireless networks are finally becoming a reality 5G extends the reach of the internet vastly, 5G speeds up
to 20 times faster than 4G
In industrial automation, every automated industry will set up its own private 5G wireless network for addressing needs and connecting industrial devices over the network
What's more, 5G also helps enhance public safety Security systems are going to be equipped with many sensors which will locate emergencies with real-time data, thus enabling timely decisions For example, if a fire starts in
a forest, an automated water deployment system could be set to respond
C EDUCATION:
Without doubt, the subject of improving living standards is a multifaceted problem, and technological advances are and have always been the force behind our unprecedented growth in the last century Indeed, human's thirst for knowledge is insatiable, and that can serve as an impetus for many other
Trang 10boundaries in contemporary science to be broken, thus improving lives not only for the privileged few, but equally for everyone and without
discrimination But we must keep in mind that the comfort we derive from technology must not be a quid pro quo for our overdependence on it Without
a strong moral compass and scientific restraint, our initial good intentions may be corrupted, and we will unknowingly aid and abet our very own dystopian future, ultimately becoming the harbinger of our own enslavement
by the machine overlords
