1.1 What is fashion?
Fashion is a popular aesthetic expression in clothing, accessories, footwear, makeup, hairstyle, and body proportions It encompasses a broad range of styles and trends, which are influenced by various factors, including culture, social status,
personal preferences, and historical events Fashion is not limited to just clothing but
also includes accessories, footwear, jewelry, and makeup Fashion is not only about following the latest trends but also about expressing one's individuality and creativity through the clothes and accessories that they wear
Fashion can be used to make a statement, express a certain mood or attitude, or
simply feel confident and comfortable in one's own skin Fashion refers to a distinctive
and often habitual trend in the style with which a person dresses, as well as to
prevailing styles in behavior Fashion also refers to the newest creations of textile
designers The more technical term, costume, has become linked to the term “fashion” Fashion has played an important role throughout history, reflecting the social, economic, and political changes of different eras It continues to evolve and change, with new trends and styles emerging every season
1.2 What is fashion in business environment ?
The concept of office attire is the general way of dressing that employees are required
to wear in the office, the required outfits exude professionalism and formality for the
wearer
When choosing office uniforms, it is necessary to aim for neatness, politeness, not cumbersome or too revealing to cause offense Helps gain the sympathy of customers, partners as well as colleagues
1.3 Basic types of business dress
In the modern workplace, clothing plays a crucial role in how individuals are
perceived, influencing their professional image and interactions Understanding
different types of business attire is essential for professionals aiming to navigate their
careers successfully This presentation explores four basic types of business dress including: business professional, business casual, smart casual, and casual attire, their appropriate contexts, and their significance in the corporate world
1.3.1 Business professional:
Business professional attire is the most traditional and formal dress code It is typically required in conservative industries such as law, banking, and finance, where
maintaining authority and professionalism is essential For men, this often includes a
tailored suit in neutral colors like black, navy, or gray, paired with a dress shirt, tie, and leather shoes Women may wear tailored pantsuits or skirts with blazers,
Trang 8complemented by neutral blouses and closed-toe heels Accessories are kept minimal
to maintain a sophisticated and polished appearance This style conveys a strong sense
of competence, authority, and reliability It is ideal for high - stakes meetings, client presentations, and formal interviews, where creating a strong impression Is essential
1.3.2 Business Casual
Business casual is a more relaxed dress code that has gained popularity in many
workplaces, especially in creative industries and tech companies It allows for personal
expression while maintaining a professional appearance Men may wear dress shirts without ties or polo shirts with chinos or dress pants Adding a blazer is optional and
can enhance the outfit’s professional touch Meanwhile, women can opt for blouses, sweaters, knit tops, or cardigans combined with skirts or slacks Comfortable footwear, such as flats or low-heeled shoes, is typically chosen to match this balanced style Business casual is appropriate for daily office work, team meetings, or semi-formal
events While business casual allows for more color and pattern, the overall look
should still be polished and suitable for the workplace
1.3.3 Smart Casual
Smart casual represents a blend of casual and formal elements, providing flexibility in
personal style without compromising professionalism This dress code 1s often seen in creative industries, startups, and less traditional corporate environments Smart casual attire can include polo shirts, dark-wash jeans, and loafers for men Women might choose trendy dresses, blouses paired with tailored trousers, and elegant flats or heels This dress code is suitable for informal meetings, team-building events, and company outings It allows individuals to showcase their personality while maintaining an air of
professionalism, making it an increasingly popular choice in modern workplaces
1.3.4 Casual attire
Casual attire 1s the least formal type of business dress, typically found in workplaces with a relaxed and innovative culture, such as tech startups or creative industries It reflects a focus on individuality and comfort For men, this could mean T-shirts, polo shirts, or jeans, paired with sneakers or loafers Women might wear simple tops, jeans,
or sundresses While casual attire prioritizes comfort, it is suggested that each person should avoid overly casual or unkempt items, such as ripped jeans or flip-flops to
maintain a professional image
2 Factors affecting fashion in a business environment
2.1 Corporate culture
Business attire is certainly influenced by corporate culture, as each organization has its own dress code according to its work culture, employees, and business type The dress code is not only about appearance but also serves as a tool to build and reinforce the company’s culture and brand image Below are various dress codes that align with the
corporate environment and culture of different organizations:
2
Trang 9Formal
Formal attire is obligatory in finance, banking, and law, where there is a need to ensure
professionalism, credibility, and respect, especially for a client These industries
rehearse the concept, that looking polished and professional gives an air of power, and that leads to being trusted
Due to companies such as Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley needing to maintain an
unage of professionalism, employees are required to wear suits and ties in an effort to help the firm earn more trust and credibility from their clients Similarly, law firms and
luxury brands like Chanel expect formal attire to communicate sophistication and reliability
Cheerful
Retail, entertainment, and creative companies, among others, enable workers to channel their creativity and vigor through what they wear to work The result is a
workplace that is fun, energetic, and dynamic- it becomes the breeding ground for
collaboration and creativity
Zappos and Pixar are known for their happy-go-lucky dress codes Employees are allowed to wear bright colors, exciting patterns, and interesting accessories This will not only speak well of the company's creative tendencies but also support building an active and optimistic environment where employees would enjoy sharing new ideas and approaches
Comfortable and Flexible
In a tech firm or startup, the freedom to dress casually and with ease is very much encouraged Therefore, this less strict dress code allows comfort within the work premises, thereby enhancing the work quality without bothering much about formal It helps build up creativity plus free-thinking minds most needed to enforce something new in different industries
Relaxed dress codes are on Google, Facebook, and Twitter, where some of the employees wear T-shirts, hoodies, and jeans An approach of ease in this manner allows the worker to be creative and productive, free from formality; they concentrate specifically on their job
Approachable
Those are generally the areas that, in their imaging, companies want to be dressed cutely, friendly, and approachable— to extend a feeling of warmth and welcome to people who walk in off the street and make them feel comfortable Clothing is central
to that expectation of an easy and customer-friendly environment
Starbucks and Disney require their employees to wear friendly, approachable uniforms that promote a fun and welcoming atmosphere These uniforms are designed to help employees interact with customers pleasantly and engagingly Not only does this create a more enjoyable work environment for the employees, but it also enhances the
3
Trang 10relationship between workers and customers As a result, the overall service
environment becomes more positive, Inviting, and engaging
In summation, Corporate culture 1s what largely shapes the clothing style at the company Whether it’s formal attire for professionalism, creative clothing for a dynamic work environment, or eco-friendly clothing to reflect sustainability values, the dress code communicates the company’s values and culture A well-chosen dress code not only creates an image for the company but also uplifts the morale of employees leading to increased productivity based on a shared vision
2.2 Fashion Trends
Fashion in business environments is also affected by trends, due to the development of society and economy over 100 years There are 4 main times that showed clearly the change 1n office fashion
Starting from the 1900s, a long, big dress covered full body was regarded as normal
clothes in business environments for women It was definitely a big problem with them
when trying to work with this attire For men, the suit or vest 1s appropriate Colorful classical vests, a little loose, with leather shoes and maybe a fedora or trilby hat, made them look so strict and formal
Come to the 1920s, World War 1, then 1930s, World War 2 was a big flood, destroying the economy, forcing the fashion to be reduced and save money The colorful attire was replaced by deep or normal color, representing the boredom and fear by the war Female workers now had uniforms like white shirts with dark color skirts or dresses Men were not different, still in a classical suit, but color was not as bright as before After the war was over, from the 1950s to 1970s, attire not only recovered but also exploded, bringing total new fashion flows, running through work places Not as much
as strict rules for both men and women, any color was allowed In this time, women often wore casual shirts and skirts, mixed with accessories like hats or necklaces, heels, to present their elegance Men now had more choices, classical vest, white shirt, colorful high-neck shirt, pants, jeans or even sport shoes
To the last section, 2000s to present Compared to the old times, it has changed and still will change a lot in future Fashion at work depends on employees’ character, lifestyle or mindset The minimalism, the protector environment, the one strict leader, 1s shown due to the way they choose their attire For example, women in this decade can wear suits as men, while men can decide to wear more colorful clothes But it still has some inner order for what should be worn to work, to ensure the formal So, it is
popular with company’s uniform, when officers can wear them to work without any
consideration
