Weather also has a strong influence on people’s feelings Winter may be bad time for thin people; they usually feel cold during these months They might feel depressed during cold weather In hot summer weather, on the other hand, fat people may feel unhappy At about 64°F, people become stronger

Most kids have started to use search engines Many of them are great for finding tons of interesting Internet sites, and they can also locate places where you might not want your kids to go There are search engines designed just for kids, A certain software contains only sites that have been selected a safe The most popular way to limit access would be to use what is known as a “content screener” But this can’t be wholly reliable, and the best thing parents can do is to talk to their kids and let them know what is OK or not OK to see or do on the Internet Another way is that mimi or dad is nearby when the child is surfing the Internet

The planet Earth is 4.600 million years old It is difficult for us to think about such an enormous’ length of time because it has little meaning for us We can, however, simplify the idea to make it more understandable We can compare the planet Earth to a person of forty-six years of age.

Nothing is known about the first seven years of this person’s life Very little information exists about the middle period either It was only at the age of forty-two that the Earth began to flower

Dinosaurs and great reptiles did not appear until one year ago When the planet was forty-five Mammals only arrived eight months ago In the middle of last week, man-like apes became ape-like men and began to communicate with each other Last weekend, the Ice Age covered the Earth

Modem man has only been around for four hours During the last hour man discovered agriculture The Industrial Revolution and the rise of large cities began just sixty seconds ago

During that short time, modem man has made a rubbish of the Earth In one minute, he has increased his numbers to terrible proportions, and has caused the death of himdreds of species of animals He has robbed and destroyed the planet in his search for fuels Now he stands, like a violent, spoilt child, delighted at the speed of his rise to power, on the edge of the final mass destruction and of killing all the life which exists in the solar system

B life on Earth began relatively recentlyC more is known about the first part of the Earth’s life than the

middle part.D scientists are well-informed about the middle part of the Earth’s

life.2 We are informed by the author th at _

D the period before the last Ice Age4 It would appear that the main danger ahead is that

A man will destroy everything on EarthB man will use up all the fuels

C there wdll be a population explosionD more species of animal may die out5 The author’s general view of man seems to be that

A he has no right to be so destructiveB he has been the most successful animalC he will be able to control the environmentD he has learned a lot from past mistakes

Population studies throughout the world have shown that blood pressure rises with age when people eat high amounts of salt.

Now, a new study by University of Minnesota researchers shows that high-salt food can damage arteries and blood vessels without raising blood pressure The study shows that salt causes small blocks in blood vessels in the brain, resulting in cell death

“salt’s infamy goes beyond its effect on blood pressure,” says Louis Tobian, professor of medicine at the University of Minnesota Hospital

I'obian studied rats that were b’^ed to resist the blood-pressure-raising effects of a high-salt food Half were fed a high-salt food, and the other half were given a low-salt food

Blood-pressure readings for both groups remained exactly the same and within normal ranges But after two months, 53 percent of the rats on the high-salt food were dead, and by 15 weeks, all had died All the rats in the low-salt food group were still alive

Although the results need to be tested by other studies, Tobian said, they suggest that salt may damage arteries even when it does not raise blood pressure For this reason, he advised, people with heart disease or high blood cholesterol, which can also damage blood vessels, should consider reducing salt

During the 19th century, it was common to hear people in Europe and American say that the resources of the sea are imlimited For example, a noted biologist writing in the mi(J-,J9‘*’ ceiitury cpmmented that none of the great sea fisheries is to be exhausted Today though, there is evidence that the resources of the sea are as seriously endangered as those of the land and the air, and that the endangered species include Herring and Carp as well as the African Elephant, Indian Tiger, and the American Eagle.

Further, the threats to fish are more alarming in some ways than the threats to animals and birds

This is because fishes are a much needed food resource and people throughout the world depend on fish as an important part of their dish, and

the decline in the fish supply could have extensive effects on hunger and population Fishermen in the North Atlantic alone annually harvest 20 billion pounds of fish to satisfy food demands, but it is important to recognize that these practices cannot continue without depleting fish storage within the next few years Sea resources are rapidly declining in many parts of world, and the problem cannot be ignored

Like the body, the memory improves with use Unlike the body, the memory improves with age

For many years, doctors have been studying the way the brain works We all know that the brain has two sides, the left and the right The right side controls the senses (seeing, hearing, feeling, tasting and smelling), and is the creative and imaginative side The left side of the brain controls our logical thinking It processes the information which comes in, and puts into

order We call the left side “educated” side of the brain and generally, in

western societies, people have developed this side of the brain more than the right side

Scientists believe that our brain will work much more efficiently if both the right side and the left side are developed equally In many schools, today, teachers try to educate the children in such a way that both sides of the brain are used This can be done with logical subjects including maths and science as well as with creative subjects such as art and literature The results achieved by students who are educated in this way are usually better than the results of students who are educated in a more traditional way

Although speech is the most advanced form of communication, there are many ways of communicating without using speech Signals, signs, symbols, and gestures may be found in every known culture The main function of a signal is to impinge upon the environment in such a way that it attracts attention, as for example, the dots and dashes of a telegraph circuit Coded to refer to speech, the potential for communication is very great Less adaptable to the codification of words, signs also contain meaning in and of themselves A stop sign or a barber pole conveys meaning quickly and more difficult to describe than either signals or signs because of their intricate relationship with the receiver’s cultural perceptions In some cultures, applauding in a theatre provides performers with an auditory symbol of approval Gestures such as waving and handshaking also communicate certain cultural messages

Although signals, signals, signs, symbols, and gestures are very useful, they do have a major disadvantage They usually do not allow ideas to be shared without the sender being directly adjacent to the receiver As a result, means of communication intended to be used for long distances and extended periods are based on speech Radio, television, and the telephone are only a few

C Communication D Speech2 What does the authof say about speech ?

A That it is the only true form of communication.B That it is dependent upon the advances made by inventors.C That it is necessary for communication to occur
