At the end of 2005, An Giang will welcome over millions tourist arrivals in which the number of oversea guests will be 30,000 The Province will continue to maintain, upgrade and improve the organization of festivals such as Lady Xu Festival, Dolta Bull-race Festival and other local festivals In addition, in order to make tourism in An Giang strongly, rapidly develop, the Province will continue to improve the content, form and service quality to create diversified types of tourism and to stimulate guests' expenditure at higher level during their stay Advisor: HOANG THI THANH TRANG, M.A Presented by: CHAD MY LINH 59 In the previous years, the Cam Mountain tourist site has been considered as Da Lat of the Mekong Delta, where average summer temperature is between 22 and 23 degrees Celcius This place is a beautiful destination for domestic tourists and international tourists coming to the province The province has planned huge investment in this area in which entertainment parks, roads for tourist automobiles to come up via the eastern slope, cable-car system from the mountain's feet to the Thien Tue Hill and from the Cao Dai Pagoda, potable water reservoir on the mountain, swimming pools as well as hotels and restaurants are expected to be accomplished in 2005 With this investment, the Province hopes to turn the area into a major resort and pilgrimage destination by 2005 Moreover, with the development of eco-tourism, the Province has many projects to develop this type of tourism One of these projects is My Hoa Hung ecological zone with the investment capital of US$ 1.500.000 The aim of this project is to develop fruit gardens, upgrade Uncle Ton's Memorial and build ecological areas 6.2.2 Long-term Objectives With the existing potential and advantages, An Giang tourism has been confirmed by the province to be one of the key economic sectors which has brought high benefits to the province Therefore, An Giang continues to invest in tourist sights, culinary culture areas, improve service quality of hotel and restaurant system, etc 6.2.2.1 Projects from 2005-2010 a) Forbidden Mountain Tourist Site Cam Mountain Tourist Site is situated in the most important tourist line including Long Xuyen-Chau Doc-Chau Doc-Cam Mountain-Tuc Dup Hill-Ba TheSap Mountain With such a position, Cam Mountain has been recognized to become an attractive tourist site The mountain foot is 50 ha, the mountain top part is 200 Therefore, Cam Mountain is suitable for the development, investment for expansion of tourism services to attract tourists to come According to the approved project by 2000 of the Cam Mountain Tourist Site, the mountain top part will be arranged to become functional areas, such as, Advisor: HOANG THI THANH TRANG, M.A Presented by: CHAU MY LINH 60 operating center, conference area for the protection area, residential area, cultural villages, parks and the of tropical forests, etc h) Sam Mountain Besides, there are also projects of investment wharf with the total expenditure construction of almost US$ for construction million, of two control stations for the international of the tourist and the project of border of Vinh Xuong, Tan Chau District are also planed The general infrastructure promotion goal of these projects serving of tourism is to invest in the construction of the the security task for Vinh Xuong border, contribute to the development speed up the economic in the best possible way, create conditions to growth, increase the income and improve life for the local people c) Oc Eo Cultural Vestige Site The Oc Eo archeological attractions, have been invested site and cultural relics, one of the major tourism in infrastructure facilities including access roads, and a reservoir The Province has worked with French School of Far East Studies to develop and preserve the region and tum it into a unique tourist site in the Mekong Delta d) Tra Su Cajuput Forest The Tra Su Cajuput forest in the South of the Province is home to range of threatened species It includes 874ha of forest in which 713ha form a habitat for storks and other birds Since 1997, the State has invested almost VND billion to build facilities in the eco-logically significant living in the forest, numbering breeding are There are 62 species about 5,000 individuals of storks and other birds The forest is home to 2,000 pairs of birds Many of these birds are found all over the world, but are still threatened with extinction of the most important With more than 300 purple herons, the forest is one places in the whole Cuu Long (Mekong) River Delta for the bird The protected area also has large patches of grass, which make it home to a diversity of birds including the fiery stork, grey heron and spot-billed Advisor: HOANG THI THANH TRANG, M.A Presented by: CHAD MY LINH duck Another 61 bird, the threatened yellow baya weaver, is only found in Tra Su and the tram Chim National Park The forest forms part of Tinh Bien District's Van Giao Commune, and is only kilometers from the Nha Bang township - only 20 minutes by bus The deputy of the An Giang People's Committee, Pham Kim Yen, has directed to consider further investments in the forest Following her lead, the Tinh Bien District and the Forest Department are co-operating with Hang Chau Tourist Joint Stock Company to invest in facilities such as a bird observation tower, fisheries site, historic sites and other services However, these buildings will not be allowed to interfere with the forest's eco-system When the project is completed, the Tra Su cajuput forest will be an Ecotourism site drawing in tourists from Viet Nam and around the world, and will help to boost social and economic development in An Giang without destroying the important ecosystem 6.2.3 Other Activities to develop An Giang Tourism From now to 2010, the province will continue create diversified types of tourism in which eco-tourism and culture tourism need to be developed strongly and effectively In addition, An Giang will continue to develop traditional industries such as carving, weaving, embroidering and fishing to enrich tourist products meeting tourists' shopping demand Organizing and maintaining traditional festivals and cultural and art performances are main tasks for An Giang tourist development because this type of tourism is the main source to attract tourists The Province will continue open showrooms and souvemr shops which introduces typical specialties of An Giang It is also necessary to establish tourist businesspeople club to exchange experiences and tourist information Thanks to this, the Province can recreate the cooperation between tourist businesspeople Advisor: HOANG THI THANH TRANG, M.A Presented by: CHAD MY LINH 62 In conclusion, the Province has had much effort to boost tourist industry Short-term objectives and long-term objectives such as, the detailed planning of Cam Mountain or the planning of the Dc Eo archeological site, are mentioned Therefore, we can believe that when these projects are finished, An Giang can attract a large number of tourists in the future The analysis of total tourist arrivals, the number of foreign guests and domestic guests as well as total revenues shows a strong attraction of a new destination- An Giang- in the next few years Advisor: HOANG THI THANH TRANG, M.A Presented by: CHAD MY LINH 63 CHAPTER 7: RECOMMENDATION AND SUGGESTION FOR AN GIANG TOURIST DEVELOPMENT Although An Giang has many advantages for tourist development such as favorable natural conditions, many tourist attractions, tourist products, they have not met the requirements of tourists An Giang has not really become an ideal and popular destination for tourists Therefore, the Province should continue to develop and invest in the existing potentials and explore new potentials to boost An Giang tourism From this reason, in this chapter, I would like to give some suggestions and recommendations that I think can attract more guests to An Giang 7.1 Development of Tourist Attractions Comparing with other provinces, An Giang has more tourist attractions In the previous years, the Province had many projects and investments to develop these destinations Some of them will be finished at the end of this year However, They have not met An Giang's tourist potentials Some destinations such as, To Mountain, Giai Mountain, have many potentials for eco-tourism development From this reason, these destinations need to be developed and invested strongly to become tourists' centers Therefore, there should be more projects to tum An Giang into attractive and safe destination when tourists come to the Mekong Delta 7.2 Tourism Infrastructure Upgrading 7.2.1 Lodging System In the previous years, An Giang Department of Tourism and Trade has motivated the reconstruction and new construction of hotel system such as Dong Xuyen Hotel (3-star hotel) and Victoria Chau Doc Hotel (4-star hotel) and other hotels However, it is forecasted that the number of tourists, especially foreign tourists, will increase in the next few years Therefore, we should continue to upgrade and improve facilities, and services of one-star or two-star hotels to serve both domestic and international tourists who have limited budget Moreover, the Province should also upgrade 3-star hotels to higher standard hotels (4 or star hotels) to serve tourists who have high requirements for accommodation As we Advisor: HOANG THI THANH TRANG, M.A Presented by: CHAD MY LINH 64 know, Japanese guests, American guests, etc are considered as generous travelers When they travel, they will refer luxurious hotels It is the reason why the Province should have some perfect hotels (4 or star hotels) to serve this kind of guests 7.2.2 Restaurants Generally speaking, the number of restaurants in An Giang is so limited At the end of 2004, the whole area had 48 hotels and restaurants in which restaurant system only accounted for 4,810 seats However, it forecasts that the number of tourists will continue to increase in the next years Therefore, the Province should upgrade and improve existing restaurants and build new restaurants that can offer more options for tourists Furthermore, although international tourists are very fond of enjoying famous traditional dishes of the South, such as snake-head cooked in a clay pot or grilled rats and frogs, some of foreigners can eat because of different tastes Therefore, restaurants should continue to renew their menus, cooking methods such as the combination of traditional dishes and Western dishes, as well as serving style to attract guests Restaurants should also offer more promotional programs such as a discount vouchers or coupons for free meals for frequent guests By this way, we can encourage tourists to enjoy their meals at our restaurants Moreover, the most important method to attract more guests is that the province should cooperate with travel agencies in other provinces such as Can Tho City, Dong Thap Town in order to get more guests when these agencies operate tours to An Giang 7.2.3 Recreational Activities In general, the tourist's average length of stay in An Giang is very limited They only spend days This shows that the recreational activities in An Giang are also very limited and so poor Therefore, it is time for tour operators to organize more activities During a tour, the tour guide should organize contests for tourists such as dancing contests or cooking contests The aim of these contests is to make tourists exciting, happy, and have many memories after visiting An Giang Moreover, they Advisor: HOANG THI THANH TRANG, M.A Presented by: CHAU MY LINH 65 should also offer small gifts for tourists who can answer questions such as the question of climate, natural conditions, or the question of history of foundation of An Giang, etc Through these activities, we can provide more information about life, people as well as An Giang's destinations Therefore, An Giang's image will make a good impression on tourists after finishing a tour Organizing camp-fire at night for tourists, especially young ones, is also a attractive activity to lure tourist Many high schools now organize tours for pupils For example, in Ho Chi Minh City, these tours often visit Dam Sen Park or Suoi Tien Park Therefore, the Province should upgrade old parks and build new parks At these parks, we can organize entertainment activities such as skipping rope, playing tag, playing football, etc for pupils 7.3 Human Resources Obviously, human resources play an important role in tourist industry However, An Giang lacks of employees both in quality and quantity Comparing with other provinces, the number of employees in An Giang is still low Moreover, their knowledge, skill and service quality have not also met guests' requirements Therefore, the Province should build up more tourist training schools to increase employees In addition, in order to improve employees' skill, we can organize contests such as contests for waitresses, waiters, bartenders, housekeepers or the contest for tour guides I think, these activities will improve the professional skills for the staff 7.4 More Advertising and Promotional Activities Advertising is very important in tourist industry because it can attract a lot of guests more Therefore, from now to 2010, the Province should focus on advertising and promotional activities The Province should continue http://www.sotmdl.angiang.gov.com.This to upgrade and improve the website website should include not only tourist Advisor: HOANG THI THANH TRANG, M.A Presented by: CHAD MY LINH 66 attractions, itineraries but also the information of hotels, restaurants and tourist news Furthermore, the Province should also continue publishing the guidebook "Welcome to An Giang" to introduce general information about An Giang tourism Participating in festivals or tourist fairs held by other provinces or by Vietnam National Administration of Tourism and recruiting tour guides who have good knowledge and communication skill are also promotional activities to bring An Giang's tourist image to people For example, when international tourists enjoy specialties of the South such as Spring Rolls, Rice Pancakes, they can ask the tour guide how to prepare these dishes At that time, if the tour guide can't answer these questions, the tourists may feel unpleased Therefore, improving the knowledge and communication skills of the tour guides is really important for tourist industry now The next important thing is that the Province should also advertise special tours and programs largely in newspapers, magazines, etc 7.5 More Diversified Types of Tourism With the existing potentials, An Giang can organize many types of tourism such as cultural tourism, eco-tourism, etc However, in order to boost An Giang tourism further, tourist businesspeople need to develop new types of tourism For example, most of international tourists like shopping, especially traditional products of Vietnam such as hat, brocade black pottery They also like traditional food of Vietnamese For that reason, the Province should continue to invest and develop traditional industries such as weaving, carving, embroidering, fishing and tourist services should organize tours to serve these demands Furthermore, we can develop some tourist villages into home-stay tourist style At these villages, we have houses for tourists to rent and small markets for shopping This is very convenient because if tourists not want to enjoy meals at the luxurious hotels, they can buy food and cook their own meals This type of tourism will make tourists feel that they are at their homes Through this type of tourism, tourists can know the lifestyle of people here Advisor: HOANG THI THANH TRANG, M.A Presented by: CHAD MY LINH 67 In conclusion, upgrading tourism infrastructure, improving tourist attractions, traditional festivals, maintaining and applying more promotional activities and advertising and diversifYing types of tourism have become major tasks for tourist development in An Giang in the next few years From this reason, I would like to give some above mentioned suggestions and recommendation that may be useful to improve An Giang tourism Although these recommendations are limited, I really hope that some of them will be applied to attract more guests in the future Advisor: HOANG THI THANH TRANG, M.A Presented by: CHAD MY LINH 68 CONCLUSION 03Wro The nationalization and modernization, the market economy development and integration into the world and the regional economy have always required pushing the economic restructuring in the direction of services, industry, and agriculture With the existing potentials and advantages, An Giang tourism has been confirmed by the Province to be one of the key economic sectors and a smokeless industry, which has brought high economic results to the Province An Giang is a place where there are many beautiful landscapes, traditional festivals and typical tourist products such as Forbidden Mountain, Tra Su Cajuput Forest, Soai So Reservoir, Lady Xu Festival, Cham Festival, Chau Doc's Fermented Fish beside other advantages such as favorable natural conditions and human resource potentials After analyzing the above advantages, we recognize that the Province is favorable and promising for tourist development in the future However, due to the strong and quick development, the Province may face many problems from environment, infrastructure to human resources As we know, big hotels have to use large amount of electricity, most of which is produced by power plants that burn coal or other fossil fuels Hotels sometimes dump large amount of waste products into lakes and rivers These activities will affect the environment Therefore, the Province needs to have a close combination between environmental organizations concerned in the protection of environment In addition, with a large number of tourists in the next few years, An Giang will lack employees in both quality and quantity From this reason, increasing employees by building up more training schools about tourism and improving the professional skills for the staff have become major tasks for the Province now Besides that, the question of investment for infrastructure serving tourism must be brought to concern and attention at a right level Hotel and restaurant system need to be upgraded and improve to meet tourists' different requirements Furthermore, other Advisor: HOANG THI THANH TRANG, M.A Presented by: CHAD MY LINH 69 organizations and associations (Cultural and Information, Planning and Investment, Communication and Transportation, Fine-Arts and Handicraft Association, etc.) should closely cooperate with the travel companies to offer excellent varieties of tours such as cultural tour, home-stay tours, etc to attract tourists Thanks to these tours, we hope that tourists will come back An Giang earlier and introduce to their relatives and friends Due to time limit, the content of this study only focuses on tourist attractions as well as geography conditions and analyses An Giang's tourist development in the previous years This study only mentions limited recommendations and suggestions that I think can be useful for developing tourism in An Giang Therefore, I really hope that I can receive other suggestions that can help An Giang tourism develop strongly and effectively in the future As my conclusion, I would like to cite the opinion of Karin Wettre-a reporter of a Swedish newspaper- after taking a tour to An Giang "My specialty is writing about crimes, but after the home-stay tour in Vietnam, I began to love tourism When I return home, I will report on the wonderful tour so that my friends and colleagues can understand more about the Vietnamese country and people" "An Giang is expecting investors An Giang offers a wonderful rendezvous place to tourists Welcome to An Giang."
