MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF ARTS EDUCATION DUONG VU BINH MINH TEACHING MUSICAL WORKS OF MUSICIAN DO HONG QUAN TO STUDENTS OF MUSIC PEDAGOGY SUMMARY OF THESIS THEORIES AND METHODS OF MUSIC TEACHING Code: 9140111 Science instructor: Prof Dr Trịnh Hoài Thu Hanoi, 2023 The thesis was completed at: NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF ARTS EDUCATION Review 1: Review 2: Review 3: The Thesis was defended before the Thesis Evaluation Committee meeting at National University of Arts Education No 55, Tran Phu, Ha Dong, Hanoi At hour minute, ., , 2023 A thesis can be found at the library: - Vietnam National Library - Library of the National University of Arts Education INTRODUCTION Reason for choosing the topic In professional music training in general and music pedagogy (MP) in particular, the use of instrumental works as teaching materials is essential Instrumental music plays an important role in the formation of musical competence, and at the same time, contributes to the education of musical aesthetics for learners For MP training, students after graduation will mainly be music educators In addition to the general knowledge and skills of music, it is necessary to strengthen the knowledge of Vietnamese music and the musical compositions of Vietnamese musicians According to the new General Education Program (32/2018/TT) issued by the Ministry of Education and Training, music was included in the curriculum of the high school for the first time At this level, music is no longer a compulsory subject like in previous levels but becomes an optional subject according to aspirations and career orientation In the curriculum, there is also an integration of music theory and common sense, which deals with the history of world music and the history of Vietnamese music Not only in high school but also in middle school, content introducing foreign and Vietnamese instrumental works Thus, in order to meet the requirements of teaching in high schools, the curriculum for MP majors also needs to have in-depth knowledge of professional music, including analyzing and appreciating Vietnamese musical works… Instrumentalists who matured after 1975 can include some names such as Tran Trong Hung, Nguyen Cuong, Dang Huu Phuc, Do Hong Quan, etc In, musician Do Hong Quan is a music activist on the internet in many fields and has made significant contributions to the Vietnamese music industry He is a musician, a conductor, teaching, and many other social activities Instrumental compositions are his most successful areas, the musician has many works in different genres: solo, trio, quartet, symphony music ensemble, ethnic orchestra, and music The works of musician Do Hong Quan show the style of absorbing Western music forms and genres quite exemplary and creative based on the language of traditional Vietnamese music Although academic, his musical language is very close, easy to understand, and leaves an impression in the hearts of listeners When having access to the instrumental works of musician Do Hong Quan, in addition to the stereotypical knowledge of European music, students are supplemented with content about form, genre, and flexible combination activities between compositional elements in the framework of Western music and traditional music materials, on how to build themes based on national music materials , and on the artistic values of Vietnamese music In addition, students also have a richer understanding of literature, poetry, and musical aesthetics The knowledge and ideas that students gain during their studies at the school will be passed on to generations of high school students, not only meeting the requirements of the new general education program 2018 of the Ministry of Education and Training Set out, but especially fulfill the task of spreading more widely about the Vietnamese folk music tradition, about the love for the motherland and the country From the above factors, it can be seen that musician Do Hong Quan deserves to be chosen to introduce the class of Vietnamese musicians after 1975 along with some other typical musicians in teaching at the University of Music Education Using his musical compositions together with some Vietnamese musical works of other musicians will serve as a rich source of teaching materials and appropriate analytical evidence in affirming language acquisition Western musical language combined using the language of traditional music of modern Vietnamese musicians However, the reality shows that Vietnamese musical compositions in general, and of musician Do Hong Quan in particular are rarely used in teaching programs for students of music pedagogy The main reason is that there are not many research documents on teaching Vietnamese musical compositions, especially in-depth studies on musical compositions about the portrait of a specific Vietnamese musician in the theoretical direction There are almost no teaching essays, analysis of work characteristics, and methods of teaching the work Thus, teachers teaching Music Pedagogy have no fulcrum to build lectures In addition, there is an incorrect perception of teachers teaching music pedagogy The program of teaching subjects at the University of Music Pedagogy has several subjects that not specify which works to teach For example, Vietnamese Music is only regulated in stages; The analysis of works also only requires teaching the necessary forms and genres The choice of which musical composition to teach and which Vietnamese musician to introduce is completely determined by the teacher, leading to the teacher only taking works that have been included in a book or printed document , while most books on the analysis of works only have references to works of European music because of the stereotypes of these works Therefore, many teachers have the perception that not using Vietnamese musical works does not have much impact For the above reasons, it is desired for the students of the University of Music Education to learn more Vietnamese musical compositions, for the teachers who teach music pedagogy to have more teaching materials, so the author chooses the topic Talent: "Teaching some instrumental compositions by musician Do Hong Quan to students of Music Pedagogy" for the Ph.D thesis majoring in Theory and Methods of Music Teaching Characteristics of Students at the University of Music Pedagogy In the face of the fact that the regional factors, the knowledge base, and the musical ability conditions of the students of the University of Music Pedagogy are uneven, the use of instrumental works in general in the learning process is very difficult trouble Because instrumental works are often highly abstract, to listen to understand, as well as apply to subjects, students need to know music But also for that reason, Vietnamese musical compositions with close and familiar images and musical materials will help students access knowledge more easily 3.2 Contents of the training program at the University of Music Pedagogy and the content of the curriculum for teaching Vietnamese musical compositions in some subjects 3.2.1 Contents of the training program at the University of Music Pedagogy In the training programs of the University of Music Pedagogy in general, there are usually blocks of knowledge such as general knowledge, general knowledge of the industry group, basic knowledge of the industry, specialized knowledge, professional knowledge of pedagogy: General knowledge block; General knowledge of the industry group; Basic knowledge of the industry; Specialized knowledge block; Pedagogical knowledge block; Pedagogical internship and a graduation knowledge block * Similarities and differences in the training of specialized knowledge subjects at some training institutions at the University of Music Pedagogy Through research, it can be seen that, about the framework of the training program of the University of Music Pedagogy at all three institutions, basically the specialized knowledge blocks have many similarities and all focus on training 21 and developing music knowledge, music for at the faculty of music pedagogy, National University of Arts Education, Faculty of Arts, Hanoi National University of Education, Faculty of Music, Thanh Hoa University of Culture, Sports and Tourism From there, draw accurate conclusions about the reality of teaching and learning musical compositions 3.3.1 Teacher's teaching situation 23 3.3.1.1 In the analysis of works The fact that Vietnamese musical compositions are rarely used in teaching Analysis of works shows that the assessment of the importance of Vietnamese musical works in teaching students of the University of Music pedagogy is incomplete In addition, the fact that there is a lack of detailed analytical documents on the musical compositions of typical Vietnamese musicians makes teachers unfavorable in teaching 3.3.1.2 In Vietnamese Music/Vietnamese Music History It can be seen that teachers have introduced Vietnamese musical works to teach Vietnamese Music/Vietnamese Music History, but it is still not very deep In particular, there was a teacher who introduced musician Do Hong Quan, using the word "Opening the Land" by musician Do Hong Quan so that Students could understand the linguistic features of composer Do Hong Quan's compositions We believe that the introduction of musician Do Hong Quan, using his works to students of the University of Music Pedagogy of the National University of Arts Education, is an example of the musical compositions of music Doctor Do Hong Quan can completely be used as teaching material for students of the University of Music Pedagogy However, the problem of materials and instrumental works of musician Do Hong Quan to students of Music Pedagogy Conclude the advantages and disadvantages of teaching some instrumental works of musician Do Hong Quan to students of music Pedagogy *Advantages: Instrumental compositions by musician Do Hong Quan often focus on using very specific thematic materials (exploited from choirs, cheo tunes, Bac Ninh quan ho, court music ) for each work to build an image, there are also works he named each music chapter This brings closeness and familiarity that can help students easily approach this abstract music genre In addition, many programs perform the works of musicians in concert halls large and small at home and abroad, which makes it very accessible to students visually * Difficulty: In addition to the difficulties in duration, the musical thinking of Vietnamese people (usually melodic), also makes it difficult to absorb musical works that are often abstract, the problem of students' self-study, there is also the problem of teacher's perception is teaching Vietnamese musical compositions in general and Do Hong Quan's musical works in particular In interviews, teachers said that there is still a lack of research on teaching Vietnamese musical compositions to serve as a fulcrum to help teachers develop lessons 25 Chapter METHODS OF TEACHING INSTRUMENTAL WORKS OF MUSICIAN DO HONG QUAN TO STUDENTS OF necessary to select one or a few of his best typical musical works to introduce more deeply to students such as String Quartet, Echo, Vietnamese Rhapsodie, Dragon Up, Tro Mot, and Spring Color Choose a few topics for students to listen to, recognize the theme's characteristics in terms of color, and tone, and especially, they should choose themes built from folk songs to affirm their national identity and also suit their abilities Music Pedagogical Students For example, the opening theme of The Dragon Rises has the material of the folk song "Dragon Snake Up in the Clouds", the Vietnamese Rhapsodie has the material of Mong folk songs, the String Quartet has the melody of the Drum Army, and Tro Mot has the theme of taking the song Ba sau thu chim - Quan Ho Bac Ninh folk song, Sac Xuan is influenced by the folk song Xe chi luon kim Quan Ho Bac Ninh folk song It is recommended to organize teaching in a way for students to listen, for students to discuss, and recognize the material of Spring Beauty, Dragon Up, Vietnamese Rhapsodie (Vietnamese Rhapsodie Refer to chapter 2), then have student comment on the similarities and differences of how the material is developed compared to the original text For Vietnamese Music, when teaching instrumental works by musician Do Hong Quan, the teacher should first introduce musical works of the period from 1975 to the present, in general terms (ideological content, genres) , compositional characteristics) of musicians of the same period After that, students will listen to Chapter II - The River Sings and Chapter III - The Speed of the Symphony The Dragon Rises, these are two musical movements that are opposite in nature If Chapter II depicts the image of the peaceful, alluvial-flowing red river of Thang Long, Chapter III describes the heroic battle against the invaders of the clothclothed hero Quang Trung Finally, ask questions about students’ feelings about the two music chapters they just listened to 4.2.5 Teaching about musician Do Hong Quan in the form of special lectures Teaching instrumental works of musician Do Hong Quan to students of Music Pedagogy can be selected by the teacher for a few words or an excerpt of a certain work to perform in some subjects as mentioned above state The teaching methods we have outlined so that if any teacher chooses to teach about musician Do Hong Quan, there will be references However, the reality shows that the content of the University of Music Pedagogy's program requires teaching musical works of Vietnamese and foreign musicians in some subjects with not much time 29 but with a lot of content another Therefore, to let students know more about Vietnamese musicians in general, and musician Do Hong Quan in particular, we propose a method of teaching about musician Do instrumental music Do Hong Quan in the Introductory Instrument course are as follows: Step 1: The teacher introduces author Do Hong Quan and the work Nocture Voices/Tro Mot Step 2: The teacher uses audio/visual materials for students to listen and watch Step 3: Ask probing questions to help students learn more about the work Step 4: Indicate the musical materials used and then help students listen and see the total score with the original song Step 5: Learn and guide students to recognize and analyze the structure of the work 4.3.5 Experimental results - When asked for a quick interview about the student’s interest in the instrumental works of musician Do Hong Quan included in the experiment, up to 87.5% of students (i.e 35 students out of the total number of students) 40 students) selection is my favorite Thus, the works we selected are suitable for the 31 subject of Analysis of Works, the subject is the students of the University of Music Pedagogy - The students clearly understood and recognized the traditional materials used in the lesson, and grasped the form of the instrumental work, through the test results 45% of the student got good marks (an increase of 15% compared to the test results) before the experiment) 4.3.6 Evaluation of the process of pedagogical experimentation After conducting experiments to use the instrumental works of musician Do Hong Quan as audio-visual materials in teaching Analysis of Works, through experimental results in the materials that we compiled In the topic and used in the course curriculum, we have some comments as follows: • As for the works selected for experimentation: we boldly included in the teaching of the Analysis of the Works some instrumental works of musician Do Hong Quan, namely Nocture Voices Vong and Tro Mot On the one hand, introduce students to a portrait of a musician in the musical period from 1975 to the present, preparing a prerequisite for the Vietnamese Music subject they will study in the next school year At the same time, the instrumental works were creatively deployed by musician Do Hong Quan, helping students understand the form and structure of the work, in addition, to the skillful use of musical materials Vietnamese folk music in building the theme of the work • About learning attitude: With the instrumental works of musician Do Hong Quan, when we compiled and included in the curriculum the subject Introduction to musical instruments to make audio-visual materials, illustrating teaching The subject received support from the teacher and students Most of the children are interested in the instrumental works that we offer, moreover, this group of works helps them better understand the instrumental features of each 32 instrument, and gain some more information Useful information about the country music scene Thus, the instrumental works of musician Do Hong Quan are suitable for the content of the study program of Analysis of Works At the same time, the students also loved and received these works positively Therefore, we suggest adding some instrumental works by musician Do Hong Quan to diversify the study of Analysis of Works, as well as help students better understand the ethnic elements included in the musical works of the high artistic quality of Vietnamese music CONCLUDE From the values that musician Do Hong Quan's musical works bring to learners, we have researched and proposed to teach some of his musical works to students of music Pedagogy We conducted a survey and experiment in three schools offering music Pedagogy It can be seen that, in the subjects we propose to teach, the available textbooks almost not use Vietnamese musical works as evidence (work analysis and musical instrument introduction), or As in Vietnamese music, songs will prevail over instrumental works in the illustrative material for musical periods Therefore, we have proposed to include the instrumental work of musician Do Hong Quan in the curriculum to improve the quality and level of the students of the University of Music pedagogy Responding to the renovation of general education, music was first included in the high school curriculum with the goal of career orientation Students of music pedagogy and future teachers will be the ones to directly teach students music knowledge We hope that the research results of the thesis will contribute to improving the quality of teaching and learning, gradually Vietnamizing the curriculum, and bringing instrumental works - musical achievements of musicians - Teacher Do 33 Hong Quan for students of music Pedagogy It is hoped that the thesis will become a useful reference source, and contribute a part of research to the teaching, learning, and artistic creation of teachers - students majoring in music pedagogy, as well as trends general development of art education in the country LIST OF DISCLOSED WORKS RELATED TO THE THESIS Duong Vu Binh Minh (2016),
