Luan an Do an Part 1: INTRODUCTION Reasons for Choosing the Topic English Teaching Methodology is a very important subject for everyone who wants to become teachers of English In this subject, students of English who are being trained to become teachers will be provided with necessary information about techniques and methods of teaching four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing Of all these four skills, listening skill is considered to be one of the most difficult skills to teach and to learn As students of English, the author herself and others have met a lot of difficulties in learning this skill She has chosen the topic about “Problems in Learning English Listening Skill at High School and Suggested Solutions” for several reasons Firstly, listening skill is thought to be the most difficult in teaching and learning a language in general and English in particular A lot of teachers and students meet many problems and difficulties in teaching and learning this skill Therefore, the author studies this topic to point out the main problems and difficulties which teachers and students have met and then can find out the important reasons for these matters Secondly, listening skill plays a very important role in teaching and learning a language so it should be paid much more attention to However, it seems that this skill is not really focused on in many high schools in Vietnam and the qualities of teaching and learning this skill are not very good Thus, this topic is chosen to study in order to find out some suggested solutions to partly improve this matter Moreover, although learning English listening skill is significant, the fact is that not many students like learning this skill for many reasons such as the difficulty in learning it well or listening lessons are quite boring Thus, the purpose of studying this topic is to create some new and interesting listening activities to motivate students into listening skill Luan an Do an Part 2: DEVELOPMENT Chapter 1: Theoretical Background 1.1 What is Listening Skill? 1.1.1 Definition of Listening Skill Listening skill can be defined in different ways According to MC Milan Dictionary, listening is to pay attention to a sound or to try to hear a sound or to pay attention to what someone tells you and what they suggest Babylon Dictionary views listening as an attempt to hear something, an act of paying careful attention to one who is speaking Similarly, in the New Era EnglishEnglish-Vietnamese Dictionary, listening is to make an effort to hear somebody or something Thus, listening is the language modality that is used most frequently Listening involves a sender (a person, radio, and television), a message, and a receiver (the listener) Listeners often must process messages as they come, even if they are still processing what they have just heard, without backtracking or looking ahead In addition, listeners must cope with the sender's choice of vocabulary, structure, and rate of delivery The complexity of the listening process is magnified in second language contexts, where the receiver also has incomplete control of the language Listening skill is integrated with the other skills in language use Like reading, listening is a receptive skill where the purpose is to comprehend or understand what someone might be saying or writing 1.12 Importance of Listening Skill In daily life, people spend a lot of time listening: officers listen to their boss’ talks, students listen to their teachers, old people listen to news on TV and radio It has been estimated that adults spend almost half of their communication time listening In language use, listening skill plays a very important role: it includes various kinds of listener’s knowledge: knowledge of phonology, vocabulary, Stt.010.Mssv.BKD002ac.email.ninhd he will inform to the third member of the group the previous sentence and the one he has just heard The game will continue like that until the last member of the group The duty of this member is to remember all the sentences and retell the whole story he has heard from his group members The group who retells the story exactly will be the winner This game is for group work and should be held in a language lab It also can be used for reporting news as well But this activity is quite difficult for 10th form students so it should be used more often for 11 th and 12th form students It may last for about fifteen minutes This activity can make students more excited and focus on listening to the story and improve students’ listening and speaking at the same time However, it is quite noisy if the teacher lets students talk too loudly and the members of the groups who have finished their listening parts will have free time Teachers should ask them to continue listening to the rest of the story and keep controlling the speaking volume of students Example: Listen to this funny story: A greedy girl “Jack was a young sailor He lived in England, but he was often away with his ship One summer, he came back from a long voyage and found new neighbours near his mother’s house They had a pretty daughter, and Jack soon loved her very much He said to her, “ my next voyage will begin in a few days’ time Gloria I love you, and I will marry you when I come back I will think about you all the time and I will write to you and send you a present from every port” Jack’s first port was Freetown in Students listen to a short text or a conversation which describes something such as a place, an object, a picture or somebody After listening, students are asked to draw a picture about the thing or the person whose characteristics they have just heard The student who has the picture which describes the most exactly is the winner This activity is for individual work and it can be used for students of three grades This game is rather interesting but it may distract students from listening to the text: they may draw something else or they only draw according to their imagination without understanding the text Teachers have to pay attention to students’ drawings and their concentration on listening by checking their understanding carefully * Notice: - The description in the listening text must be clear enough for students to understand and draw more easily - To draw more exactly, while listening, students can remember or write down what is being described Example: Listen to the following passage and draw the person which is described: “There in the middle of the courtyard stood our formidable head-master talking to a tall man in a bowler hat, a rare sight already at that date, so that he looked a little like an actor in costume- an impression not so far wrong, for I never saw him in a bowler hat a gain He carried a walking stick over his shoulder at the slope like a listening texts should be more difficult For example: Look at these words and write a short passage according to your understanding: Aladdin, an order, close his shutters, Princess, hide, peep, lift her veil, fall in love, ask her in marriage, magic fruits And here is the original listening passage: “One day Aladdin heard an order from the Sultan proclaimed that everyone was to stay at home and close his shutters while the Princess his daughter went to and from the bath Aladdin was seized by a desire to see her face, which was very difficult, as she always went veiled He hid himself behind the door of the bath, and peeped through a chink The Princess lifted her veil as she went in, and looked so beautiful that Aladdin fell in love with her at first sight He went home so changed that his mother was frightened He told her he loved the Princess so deeply he could not live without her, and meant to ask her in marriage of her father His mother, on hearing this, burst out laughing, but Aladdin at last prevailed upon her to go before the Sultan and carry his request She fetched a napkin and laid in it the magic fruits from the enchanted garden, which sparkled and shone like the most Luan an Do an PART 3: CONCLUSION 3.1 Recapitulation Clearly, teaching and learning English listening skill in particular and a language listening skill in general are not easy at all It requires much effort from both teachers and students The thesis discusses some main points about listening skill: several different definitions according to some dictionaries, importance and types of listening Moreover, it comes up a language teaching approach called CLT with the main roles of teachers and students It also presents seven principles of teaching listening skill, its types of activities and sub-skills as well In addition, the study investigates the real situations of teaching and learning listening skill in a high school (Nguyen Xuan On) by doing a survey about this school The survey questionnaire which consists of 16 questions is given to 135 students from three grades of the school to search for necessary information From the survey, a lot of useful information has been collected to come to a conclusion for many matters of teaching and learning this skill which need solving Besides, some suggested solutions including subjective solutions from the schools and objective solutions from teachers and students are given The study also recommends some listening activities and games for teachers and students to consult All in all, though English is a difficult subject for many students, it has been becoming more and more important in modern life Therefore, students had better pay much more attention to it Furthermore, in spite of the fact that listening skill is really a very difficult skill to teach and to learn well, it plays an important role in learning this subject and in communication in modern society so both teachers and students have to try to improve the quality of teaching and learning it “Rome is not built in a day” – no success can be achieved easily and in a short time so we should try our best to make the teaching and studying of this skill better and better Stt.010.Mssv.BKD002ac.email.ninhd the limitations of the author’s knowledge and experience, the study cannot cover all the matters relating to the topic There are still many more problems and solutions such as new interesting activities to change the boring and stressful atmosphere in many listening classes Therefore, the author hopes that someone who is interested in this matter will continue to develop this topic so as
