AGA Baton Rouge Chapter History 2017-2018

AGA BATON ROUGE CHAPTER HISTORY REPORT 2017 – 2018   The 2017-2018 Association of Government Accountants (AGA) program ended on June 30, 2018 with another successful year The Chapter was able to achieve the following goals: participated in several community service events, awarded six (6) endowments to three (3) universities in the community, provided 40 continuing education CPE hours to members, added a sponsorship chair to the Chapter Executive Committee (CEC) Board, received platinum status at the AGA National level, and updated to a new website, compliments of the National office The Chapter Executive Committee (CEC) met monthly from July 2017 through June 2018 to discuss and vote on chapter business throughout the year The CEC monthly meetings were held at the East Baton Rouge Library on Wednesdays at 5:30 pm Chapter members were invited to attend these meetings through announcements in the newsletters and the Chapter website The CEC members for the 2017-2018 program the CEC Board (Lesha Woods, Vita Archie, LaKayle Tillery, and Marella Houghton) Eight (8) new members were added to AGA Baton Rouge Chapter for the program year through adopting “Each One Reach One” newsletter, chapter website, calendar of events on the National website, Chapter Facebook page, and various email blasts throughout the year The Chapter participated in several community service projects during the program year The Chapter collected 30 new toys to “Toys for Tots” on behalf of the Marine Corps of Baton Rouge; collected over 200 pounds of food for the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank; donated $50 cash, toiletries and 12 Easter Baskets to St Vincent DePaul Homeless Shelter; and the members donated their time by signing up and making donations to the Capital Area Heart Walk The Chapter raised $1,000 for the Capital Area Heart Walk Our mission at the AGA Baton Rouge Chapter is to educate and give back to the financial community To accomplish this goal, the Chapter has established and contributed to endowments for Louisiana State University (LSU), Southeastern Louisiana University (SE), Nicholls State University, University of Louisiana at Lafayette (ULL), and the University of New Orleans (UNO) Six recipients were awarded the endowments at the following universities: (3) Nicholls State University, (2) Louisiana State University, and (1) Southeastern University A chapter officer is represented at the Awards Banquet held at each university where a business major student is presented with the scholarships from the AGA endowment fund This year, President Carolyn White had the opportunity to present the scholarship endowments to three business students at Nicholls State University Award Banquet on April, 2018 Due to other obligations, a Chapter Officer was not represented at the other two award ceremonies In addition, the Chapter also budgets funds available for two (2) Chapter scholarships: Joseph H Burris Scholarship ($1,000) and William M Burch Baton Rouge Scholarship ($750) Unfortunately, no student applied for the scholarship this program year Additionally, in recognition of Certified Government Financial Management (CGFM), the Chapter was able to acquire (1) proclamation from Governor of Louisiana office and (1) from the Mayor of Baton Rouge office recognizing our CGFM’s for the month of March In order to provide our members with quality CPE’s, the Chapter decided to move its Fall and Spring Professional Development Training Conferences to the Embassy Suites of Baton Rouge, which provided 33 hours of CPEs, which was a very successful conference Nevertheless, due to a decline in attendance at our monthly Business Meeting, the Chapter found it feasible to only have two business meetings for the program year (Student Night and Past President Night Business Meeting), which offered CPE each To obtain the additional five (5) hours CPE’s the members needed, the Chapter promoted the webinars offered at the National Level through email blast and via the chapter website A total of 40 hours of CPE for the program year Page of   AGA BATON ROUGE CHAPTER HISTORY REPORT 2017 – 2018 Furthermore, due to limited funds, the Chapter decided to create a Sponsorship Chair on the CEC Board to recruit sponsors to promote the two annual professional development training conference Funds generated from sponsorship would enable the chapter to attract more membership, especially the young professionals and to afford engaging speakers for our conferences The new position is currently filled and the chapter has obtained one sponsor, Postlewaite and Netterville and has gained one new sponsor for the upcoming year Our continued goal is to develop corporate sponsorship to increase our working capital and to benefit from the involvement of our corporate sponsors’ professionals In addition, the Baton Rouge Chapter members attended two AGA National Training events The two events were the Sectional Leadership Meeting (SLM) in Kansas City, Missouri from April 19 – 21, 2018 and the 2018 Professional Development Training (PDT) in Orlando, Florida from July 21 – 25, 2018 We are pleased to announced, we had five (5) board members representing the Baton Rouge chapter at the National PDT and two (2) attendees at the SLM Attendees at both training worked with other chapter leaders and returned with ideas to promote government accountability in our chapter President Carolyn White received the Platinum Designation Award at the PDT National Award Ceremony for reaching platinum status for the 2017-2018 program year Also, the Chapter held two socials during the program year to express its appreciation to its members The Christmas Social was combined with a Meet and Greet after the Fall PDT Conference at the Embassy Suites of Baton Rouge on December 5, 2017 at 6:00 p.m The Chapter hosted the end of year Spring Social, which was held at T J Ribs in Baton Rouge located on Acadian Thruway, May 23, 2018 Awards were presented by Tiffani Dorsa, who received the Volunteer of the Year Award and was recognized at the AGA National Professional Development Training Conference in July, 2018 An award certificate along with a gift card was presented to several AGA Baton Rouge Chapter members for outstanding volunteer service rendered during program year 2017-2018 The recipients are: Vita Archie of hard-working CEC members and a few dedicated members Our goal for next year is to increase membership, attract college and high school student by having meetings on campuses to promote AGA, to gain
