Supervised Practicum SP 2012 Marion Thursdays 12-1:30 Room 225 A supervised counseling experience in the graduate counseling clinic providing the opportunity to practice individual and group a supervised counseling experience with the opportunity to practice individual, marriage, and family and group counseling This course will include both individual and group supervision The 100-hour practicum includes 50 direct client hours; however, more hours may be required of you to meet the clinic demands Direct client hours will match what comes in the Clinic At the Practicum level you need experience across all developmental levels and with a variety of problems Through this experience you will most certainly see clients in your specialization and outside your specialization The mission OBJECTIVE(S) Complete a supervised Practicum experience (minimum 100 clock hours) with a minimum of 40 direct client contact hours in a therapeutic setting and ten group hours Demonstrate acceptance education Multi Tasking policy: Please turn off all cell phones and electronic devices and please refrain from texting, surfing, instant messaging and all other data interchanging through electronic means Laptops may be used in class for in class activities Volitions of this policy will be considered violations of professional standards All violations will result in points for that day and will be reflected in your professional points for the class (See note under important reminders in syllabus) Violations will be considered a class absence and will result in a ½ letter grade deduction 45pts Completed Portfolio 5pt Must have at least a 2.5 average on your clinical evaluations (midterm and final combined) to Pass on to internship Note: Completion of hours in the clinic does not ensure the passing of Practicum 550 You must complete all requirements satisfactorily and receive an Evaluation point average of 2.5 ( based on a point likert scale) on your combined evaluations (mid-term and final) Disclosure: Due to the high volume of clients you may be required to contribute more than the minimum practicum hours to the clinic Be prepared to see additional clients if necessary Logs should be turned in monthly Also note, they are a legal document and any misrepresentation of hours may be grounds for dismissal from the program Any student who does not complete their hours or does not turn in their logs by the end of the semester will receive an incomplete for Practicum The mission of IWU’s College of Graduate Studies is to prepare students to lead change in their world by providing high quality, Christ-centered graduate education Requirements: Attendance and Participation: All students are expected to attend and participate in every class Graduate education is highly collaborative and your attendance and participation is crucial to the learning environment You are also expected to attend all your clinic and supervision sessions prepared ahead of time and be on time All students are expected to attend and participate in every class This may not always be possible however if students miss more than one class there will be a penalty of a ½ letter grade deduction per every absence after ONE and may result in a Failure of the class Liability Insurance: All students will submit proof of Liability Insurance to your supervisor and to the Graduate Clinic Office Supervision: You will have one hour of weekly supervision starting with week two The three hour practicum class will at that point be for 1/2 hours, thus with weekly individual supervision this equals hours of supervision Please give a copy of your insurance to the instructor and to the Office Objective 111 Logs: You need100 clock hours of practicum (Approximately hours per week for 12 weeks) This includes 40 clock hours of direct service to clients, 10 hours of group and 1/2 hours per week of supervision Keep an accurate weekly log of activity, signed by university supervisor Objective Journaling: All students are expected to journal each week concerning what they are learning about themselves, their clients and the counseling relationship These journals are personal reflections about significant learning and the application of that learning The journals are confidential and will be evaluated on the basis of insight in the above areas and application of these insights for future growth Journals should be typed and turned in at the end of every month, see that your journals reflect your readings in Boylan, Norcross, Humble and Corey, Napier, Craig and Erk (Per specialty) You will be graded on those inclusions as well This is Graduate School reading is a way of life now and in your future professional life I should not have to assign chapters Practicum goals: Establish goals in the following domains: Make the goals specific behavioral goals Create a numeric evaluation such as a Likert scale Evaluate your progress throughout the semester at the beginning and the end Objective Professional Development Personal Growth Spiritual Development Integration Skills Self Care Clinical skills The mission of IWU’s College of Graduate Studies is to of the essay at Midterm Evaluation and the final look at these questions at your Final Evaluation I expect to see a critical and honest look at you the counselor this is more that an academic assignment Objective Essay Focus Question: What defines our Counseling work and what sustains us in this work? “Counseling is a disciplined, creative and spiritual reflection on the natural and humanly constructed world of our clients and ourselves disseminated for their benefit and judged by appropriate standards of excellence” It Requires: Effort, Insight, and Creativity Effective Communication and Therapeutic technique Willingness to learn from the critique of a supervisor, peers and the client Dimensions of the Counseling Process: • Analytic: how things work; accurate information; logical explanation • Strategic: making change happen; altering things in the system; practical congruency • Empathic: seeing the therapeutic relationship; experiencing the flow of session; sensing the parallel process What is/ are the Questions you are personally trying to answer by becoming a counselor? How they drive or motivate your counseling? How would you describe your sense of calling or choice to be a counselor in light of your questions? What kinds of intrinsic rewards give you the most encouragement and will help you to continue in this profession years from now Transcript of one Session: Transcribe one 10 to 15 minutes from a session then write about what you learned about your counseling from it Case Presentations: Each student will make case presentations to the class These presentations will be typed, double spaced and will include: a brief description of the client; presenting problem; etiology; diagnosis and a treatment plan (including short and long-term goals) with interventions (See forms) Use the two forms provided on Blackboard Objectives 1-11 Peer Evaluation: Every student will have an opportunity to view two sessions of another practicum student and provide feedback to that student regarding their performance This feedback is designed to give each student an opportunity to give and receive feedback from another practicing student counselor A copy of these will be given to your Supervisor as well for grading You will be graded on the professional insight help and input you provide to your fellow students Please select another Practicum student and secure permission to view a session (it helps if you agree to view each other) they will select the session they wish you to view and give them feedback on View the session the session report (found on CIPPS) and turn it in when due I should receive 4, total on you by someone else Indentified with an A and that you did on someone Indentified with a B Objectives 1-11 10 Clinic Recording: All students sessions will be recorded it is your responsibility to hit the record button before session starts and after it ends (Make sure permission to record is signed first) These recording will also be used in group and individual supervision for teaching and evaluation of counseling skills and progress (There are no exceptions) Objectives The mission of IWU’s College of Graduate Studies is to prepare students to lead change in their world by providing high quality, Christ-centered graduate education 11 Clinic Documentation: will also be evaluated by audit (Therefore, it is essential that client documentation is current, accurate, and assessable in the clinic and the files brought to supervision) Written evaluation will be given to each student at mid-term and the final supervision session Objectives 10 12 Group hours: Students will at minimum participate in 10 group hours preferably co-lead or lead the group, please ok your group assignment with your supervisor by rd week of practicum Objective 13 Midterm and Final Evaluation: You will be given a midterm and final evaluation in supervision at stated times in outline given in syllabus Objectives 1-11 14 Portfolio: At the end of the semester turn into the professor a portfolio folder containing the following in the order listed Practicum Summary Page Final Hour log summary sheet Monthly hour logs (copies) Copies of Evaluations (Practicum supervisor) Mid-Term, Final Practicum goals with a Beginning and Final evaluation of your progress A Typed Sample of case progress notes Soap Notes (no identifying information) Group assignment sheet containing (title of group, where, dates attended, leader of group and his/her signature Copy of your Insurance Memberships you may have in professional organizations Important Reminders: (These will having bearing on your Evaluations) Clinic Manual: The student is expected to read the Practicum section of the Clinic Manual and have a thorough knowledge of all requirements related to successful completion of practicum Confidentiality: Students must maintain confidentiality of all case discussions The discussion of cases outside of the group setting with persons other than those in the counseling program, the client, the instructor or your supervisor are violations and are grounds for being dismissed from the class with a failing grade Please use caution in this area you are responsible no excuses will be accepted Nothing is to be taken out of the clinic under any circumstances for any reason Demonstration: Begin a Mastery of the individual and family counseling skills involved in (a) Responding to individual clients, couples or family, (b) Integrative understanding of individual clients, couples and family system dynamics, (c) Skillfully listening to individual clients, couples or families (d) Facilitating action on the part of the individual clients, couples or the family The mission of IWU’s College of Graduate Studies is to prepare students to lead change in their world by providing high quality, Christ-centered graduate education Ethics: All students in the program must demonstrate behavior that is consistent with the Ethical Standards put forth by the American Counseling Association (ACA; http://www.counseling.org/resources/ethics.htm) General and Mental health http://www.aamft.org/resources/LRM_Plan/Ethics/ethicscode2001.asp Marriage and Family http://www.iaapin.org/uploads/IAAP_Code_of_Ethics.pdf Addictions http://www.schoolcounselor.org/files/ethical%20standards.pdf School Counselors Violations are grounds for being dismissed from the class with a failing grade Professional Standards: The counseling profession requires a high level of personal integrity, self-awareness, and personal maturity Demonstrating professionalism in the classroom and the Clinic is expected of you as well as being present and engaged in the classroom and the Clinic You are practicing under the professors license act according Course Accommodations: If you need course adaptations or accommodations because of a disability, please make an appointment with The Center for Student Success – Second Floor of the Student Center (Phone x2257) as soon as possible If you have already received an Education Accommodation Notification from CSS, have emergency medical information to share with your course faculty, or if you need special arrangements in case the building must be evacuated, please make an appointment with the faculty member as soon as possible Student Honesty/Cheating Students are expected to exhibit honesty in the classroom, in homework, in papers submitted to the instructor, and in quizzes or tests Each instructor should define what constitutes honest work in a specific course Any deviation from ordinary standards such as the permitted use of notes for an examination or an "open book" test should be stated clearly by the instructor Cheating is defined as submitting work for academic evaluation that is not the student's own, copying answers from another student during an examination, using prepared notes or materials during an examination, or other misrepresentations of academic achievement submitted for evaluation or a grade Plagiarism in research writing is considered cheating • Plagiarism is defined by the MLA Handbook as "the act of using another person's ideas or expressions in writing without acknowledging the source to repeat as your own someone else's sentences, more or less verbatim." • The Prentice Hall Reference Guide (2006) indicates, "To plagiarize is to include someone else's writing, information, or idea in a paper and fail to acknowledge what you took by indicating whose work it is" (p 292) Students are expected to submit only their own original work They are expected to give credit when borrowing, quoting, or paraphrasing, using appropriate citations An undergraduate student apprehended and charged with cheating, including plagiarism, during his or her college matriculation, shall receive the following discipline: First incident of cheating failure in paper, assignment, or exam;
