Nguyen Thi Bao Yen, M.A ABSTRACT  This paper is a suggested translation of Chapter 15 from the book “Born A Crime” by Trevor Noah who is better known as a comedian and actor The comedic memoir was first published in November 2016 It received mostly favorable critical reviews, and it also became a New York Times best-seller First, I am going to translate the English version of chapter 15 into the Vietnamese version Next, I analyse complex vocabulary and structures in the translation and come to the suggested translation version The disadvantages in the translation process and some essential solutions are proposed at the end of the graduation paper Political speeches in English and Vietnamese are a ‘fertile land’ where this study can investigate and discover the basic characteristics of argumentation power of antithesis and stylistic features of rhetorical devices in antithesis Based on the analysis result of the achieved statistical information detected from the embedded cultural elements, argumentation as well as politics, this study will (a) explain some concepts involved, (b) point out argumentation power of antithesis and stylistic features of rhetorical devices in antithesis in English political speeches and then in Vietnamese political speeches (c) discover the similarities and differences of these features in political speeches between the two languages Student: Le Thi Khanh Ngoc Code: 2320310691 Graduation Paper Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Bao Yen, M.A ABBREVIATIONS  SL : Source Language (English) TL : Target Language (Vietnamese) P : Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Bao Yen, M.A CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION 1.1 Rationale In South Africa, nearly everywhere black existence itself was against the law of the invader - white South Africans, who comprise only percent of the population, had appropriated 87 percent of the land mass to themselves, including all major cities, permitting South African blacks, who comprise 95 percent of the total population, only small parcels of arid soil for black "homelands," compulsory reservations Under the apartheid system, series of laws made it technically for blacks to appear anywhere else at all Trevor Noah unlikely path from Apartheid to the desk of The Daily Show began with a criminal act: his birth Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison In the book “Born A Crime”, Noah described Apartheid as “institutionalized racism” By turns alarming, sad and funny, his book provided a harrowing look, through the prism of Mr Noah’s family, at life in South Africa under apartheid and the country’s lurching entry into a postapartheid era in the 1990s “Racism exists and people are getting hurt Just because it’s not happening to you doesn’t mean it’s not happening” The stories in this book was anecdotes of Trevor's from growing up and living under the restrictive laws of Apartheid Since the earliest days of colonial South Africa, black people were forced to take a European name “that white people could pronounce” Black South Africans really had no idea who Hitler was at this point in time, and mostly thought of him as someone so powerful that he almost made the Allies lose their war and South Africans wanted to seem tough, so they named their children “Hitler” Trevor spent this chapter to tell the story of his friend whose name was Hitler That was the reason why I chose chapter 15 of this book Student: Le Thi Khanh Ngoc Code:2320310691 Graduation Paper Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Bao Yen, M.A 1.2 Aims and Objections 1.2.1 Aims Doing this thesis, I has reflected on my own abilities in the last years of university within support, advice and instruction of teacher and friends at Duy Tan University Besides, this translated version helps readers understand the content and meaning that the original conveys Moreover, I avoid some small mistakes and disadvantages for my final translation 1.2.2 Objectives • Improving and applying theories, skills and techniques in translation • Learning about foreign cultures and understanding main content of the original text • Translating from original into Vietnamese version easily and naturally • Analyzing difficult phrases, complex sentences and structures which easily make misunderstand for readers 1.3 Scope of the Study 1.3.1 The Text Features The book Born a Crime – Stories from a South African childhood (2016) was written by Trevor Noah in November 5th , and published in the United State by Spieg Until now, it had 14 published editions and became the New York Times Bestseller In addition to being funny, this book offers interesting facts that are related to each chapter’s content A collection of eighteen personal stories, Born A Crime tells the story of a mischievous young boy growing into a restless young man as he struggles to find his place in a world where he was never supported to exist 1.3.2 The Text Length There are parts within 18 chapters and 304 pages in this book I am going to translate the Chapter 15 called “Hitler!” with total 4800 words This chapter talk about the childhood of the writer – Trevor Noah and his close friends Student: Le Thi Khanh Ngoc Code:2320310691 Graduation Paper 10 Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Bao Yen, M.A 1.3.4 The Text Source The text is chapter 15 from the book “Born A Crime” by Trevor Noah, published in 2016 I got this book by accessing to the web https://websach.com/born-a-crime/ 1.4 Method of the Study - Reading (scanning and skimming) the whole document to get the key points - Reading the chapter to obtain details - Translating the language and taking notes on complicated terminologies, phrases, and text structures - Discussing vocabularies, phrases, and structures with the administrator, coworkers, and relatives, and linking to such terminologies, expressions, and structures on the Internet - Finishing the text and presenting a proposed edition Student: Le Thi Khanh Ngoc Code:2320310691 Graduation Paper 46 Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Bao Yen, M.A Synonyms is defined as a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase in the same language, for example shut is a synonym of close in Oxford Dictionaries Example 5: [P25] Six million people killed We can all look at that number and rightly be horrified [P28] The teachers, the chaperones, the parents, the hundreds of Jewish kids in their yarmulkes - they froze and stared aghast at us up on the stage The words “horrified” and “aghast” have the same meaning in the text  Suggested version: Sáu triệu người thiệt mạng Tất có thể bị kinh hoàng nhìn qua số liệu.[P25]  Suggested version: Các giáo viên, người giám hộ, bậc phụ huynh, hàng trăm đứa trẻ Do Thái mặc yarmulke - họ đứng sững lại kinh hồng nhìn chúng tơi đứng sân khấu.[P28] 4.1.3 Phrasal Verb Phrasal verb is a phrase that consists of a verb with a preposition or adverb or both, the meaning of which is different from the meaning of its separate parts (according to Cambridge Dictionary) Here are a few phrasal verbs in the original text that confused me when translating Example 6: [P27] The day of the event, we booked a minibus, loaded it up with our gear, and drove over As far as I am concerned, in the Cambridge Dictionary, “Load it up” means “to full fill the stuff into ” However in the context of this report, I cannot translate it as “tải lên”, but I translate it as “chất đầy”  Suggested version: “Vào ngày kiện diễn ra, đặt xe buýt nhỏ, xe chở nhóm chất đầy đồ đạc đến”[P27] Example 7: [P25]“And that’s really what it comes down to” In the Longman Dictionary, “come” means “to move to or towards a person or place” But considering the context of this article, I cannot translate the phrasal verb “come down to” as “đi xuống” I had a hard time translating the meaning of Student: Le Thi Khanh Ngoc Code:2320310691 Graduation Paper 47 Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Bao Yen, M.A this phrase After carefully consideration, I decided to translate it as to take place “xảy ra”  Suggested version: “Và đó thực xảy ra” [P25] 4.2 Structures 4.2.1 Compound Sentences A compound sentence is a sentence that uses comma, semicolon, or conjunction to combine at least two independent clauses The conjunction used to connect independent clauses include “for”, “so”, “yet”, “but”, “and”, “or” and “nor” Besides, compound sentences also use conjunction adverb such as: however, even so, therefore, etc Example 8: [P26] There was going to be all sorts of different dancing and music, and everyone was going to come together and hang out and be cultural Like the above example, this sentence also has two independent clauses The first independent clause is “There was going to be all sorts of different dancing and music” The second is “everyone was going to come together and hang out and be cultural” Two independent clauses are tied by the conjunction“and” After analyzing, I found that I could translate this sentence as follows  Suggested version: “Có nhiều loại hình âm nhạc khiêu vũ khác nhau, mọi người vui chơi giao lưu văn hóa”.[P26] Example 9: [P26] “Successful black families were moving to the suburbs, but their kids still wanted to have block parties and stay connected to the culture of the townships, so they’d book us to play their parties.” There are three independent clauses in this sentence The first independent clause is “Successful black families were moving to the suburbs” The second is “their kids still wanted to have block parties and stay connected to the culture of the townships” The third is “they’d book us to play their parties” Student: Le Thi Khanh Ngoc Code:2320310691 Graduation Paper 48 Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Bao Yen, M.A These independent clauses are connected by the conjunction “but” and “so”  Suggested version: “Các gia đình da đen thành đạt bắt đầu chuyển ngoại ô, họ muốn tụ tập, tiệc tùng trì kết nối văn hóa thị trấn, họ muốn hẹn biểu diễn buổi tiệc.” [P26] 4.2.2 Complex Sentence A complex sentence is a sentence that contains an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses An independent clause can stand alone as a sentence, but a dependent clause cannot stand alone Normally, the dependent clause begins with the subordinating conjunctions as follows:  Although/ Even though/ Though  After/ Since/ Until/ While/ As/ Before/ When  If/ Because/ Unless  Whenever/ Whereas/ Wherever/ etc 4.2.2.1 Complex Sentences with Adverbial Clause Adverbial clause is dependent clause which functions as an adverb and gives an information about verb, adjective, or adverb Adverbial clause gives additional information about independent clause to answer the questions, for example: how, when, where, why, or to what degree Adverbial clause is related with subordinating conjunctions; for example, when, after, because, though, etc These words are used to combine dependent with independent clause There are many kinds of adverbial clause: adverbial clause of time, place, cause & effect, purpose & result, condition, contrast/concession, manner and reason Example 10: [P13] For generations, while his people were preparing to go to university, my people were crowded into thatched huts singing Subordinating conjunction: while  Adverbial clause: while his people were preparing to go to university Student: Le Thi Khanh Ngoc Code:2320310691 Graduation Paper 49 Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Bao Yen, M.A  Independent clause: my people were crowded into thatched huts singing  Suggested version: “Từ bao đời nay, người da trắng chuẩn bị vào đại học, dân chen chúc túp lều tranh ngân nga ” [P13] Example 11: [P22] But from colonial times through the days of apartheid, black people in South Africa were required to have an English or European name as well - a name that white people could pronounce, basically Subordinating conjunction: as well  Adverbial clause: as well - a name that white people could pronounce, basically  Independent clause: But from colonial times through the days of apartheid, black people in South Africa were required to have an English or European name  Suggested version: “Nhưng từ thời thuộc địa thời kỳ phân biệt chủng tộc, người da đen Nam Phi được yêu cầu phải có tên tiếng Anh tên châu Âu phải tên mà người da trắng có thể phát âm” [P22] Example 12: [P3] They’d realized that they could take Andrew’s and Bolo’s merchandise, say “I’ll pay you later,” and then not pay, because Andrew and Bolo were too scared of black people to go back to ask for the money Subordinating conjunction: because  Adverbial clause: Andrew and Bolo were too scared of black people to go back to ask for the money  Independent clause: They’d realized that they could take Andrew’s and Bolo’s merchandise, say “I’ll pay you later,” and then not pay  Suggested version: “Bọn trẻ thấy có thể mua hàng Andrew Bolo, nhắn "Lần sau trả”, không trả tiền món Andrew Bolo mệt mỏi với lần đám trẻ da đen quay lại xin xóa nợ” [P3] 4.2.2.2 Complex Sentences with Relative Clauses A relative clause is a clause that follows a noun, and has the function of modifying nouns Relative clause begin with relative pronouns: who, whom, which, that, whose or relative adverbs: why, where, when Student: Le Thi Khanh Ngoc Code:2320310691 Graduation Paper 50 Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Bao Yen, M.A Example 13: [P6] “I had an instinct for business, but at the time I knew nothing about music, which was odd for someone running a music -pirating business” This sentence has a relative clause “which was odd for someone running a music -pirating business” → “which” is replaced for “music”  Suggested version: “Mặc dù kinh doanh vào thời điểm đó không có kiến thức âm nhạc, điều thật kỳ quặc người kinh doanh âm nhạc vi phạm quyền.” [P6] Example 14: [P23] “My own grandfather thought “a Hitler” was a kind of army tank that was helping the Germans win the war.” This sentence has a relative clause “that was helping the Germans win the war”→ “that” is replaced for “a kind of army tank”  Suggested version: “Ông nội nghĩ "Hitler" loại xe tăng quân đội giúp quân Đức giành chiến thắng thời chiến.”[P23] Example 15: [P18] “The only ways I had to make money were pirating CDs and DJ’ing parties, and now that I’d left Sandringham, the minibus drivers and corner kids in Alexandra were the single biggest market for my CDs It was also where I was playing the most gigs, so to keep earning I naturally gravitated that way.” In this sentence, the relative clause “where I was playing the most gigs” is replaced for “Alexandra”  Suggested version: “Kế sinh nhai chép đĩa CD làm DJ bữa tiệc, rời Sandringham, tài xế xe buýt nhỏ đám trẻ góc phố Alexandra thị trường lớn cho việc kinh doanh Hầu hết hợp đồng tơi đó, để tiếp tục kiếm tiền, theo lẽ tự nhiên bị vào việc này.” [P18] 4.2.2.3 Complex Sentences with Noun Clauses A noun clause refers to a clause that serves the same purpose as a noun and is usually dependent Just like nouns do, a noun clause names people, things, places, Student: Le Thi Khanh Ngoc Code:2320310691 Graduation Paper 51 Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Bao Yen, M.A and ideas Noun clauses typically have a verb and a subject, but they cannot express a complete thought in a sentence; hence they are known as dependent clauses Since noun clauses cannot form complete sentences, they are usually used together with an independent clause Noun clauses can begin with ‘whatever, whichever, whoever, whomever, how, why, what, when which, whether, whose, if, that’ Translating sentences containing noun clause is a challenge because noun clause is a difficult part in English grammar It often makes us difficult to understand the meaning of the sentence clearly if we misinterpret its function Therefore, when I translate complex sentences with noun clauses, I must be very focused when analyzing Example 16: [P29] We’re gonna what we’re gonna In this sentence, the noun clause “what we’re gonna do” work as an object modifying the verb “do”  Translated version: “Chúng tơi làm muốn” [P29] Example 17: [P4] He showed me how his business worked, too, how to download music, where to get rewritable CDs in bulk In this sentence, there are noun clauses (1) “how his business worked” → noun clause begin with “how”, keeping the subject function of the verb “work” (2) “, how to download music” → similar to sentence (1), “how” also holds the subject function of the verb “download” (3) where to get rewritable CDs in bulk → noun clause begin with “how”, keeping the subject function of the verb “get”  Translated version: “Anh cho biết cách anh vận hành việc kinh doanh, cách tải nhạc xuống, nguồn chứa hàng loạt đĩa CD”[[P4] 4.2.3 Passive Voice Verbs are written with the subject receiving the action expressed by the verb called passive voice Passive voice is a common structure in English However, in Vietnamese, people rarely use passive voice to communicate or to express an idea Student: Le Thi Khanh Ngoc Code:2320310691 Graduation Paper 52 Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Bao Yen, M.A Therefore, when translating a passive sentence, sometimes I have to convert it into an active sentence Example 18: [P23] We weren’t taught how to think about how Hitler related to the world we lived in Tense: Simple Past The structure of this passive voice sentence is: BE + PAST PARTICIPLE In this sentence, I decided to translate it with its original structure because when translated into Vietnamese, this sentence still has a reasonable and smooth meaning  Translated version: “Chúng không được dạy mối liên hệ Hitler với giới quan mà sống” [P23] Example 18: [P13] My family had been denied the things his family had taken for granted Tense: Past Perfect The structure of this passive voice sentence is: HAD BEEN + PAST PARTICIPLE In this sentence, I also translated it with its original structure because I want to remain the emphasis of the subject  Translated version: Gia đình tơi bị từ chối thứ mà gia đình anh lẽ đương nhiên.[P13] Example 19: [P13] For generations, while his people were preparing to go to university, my people were crowded into thatched huts singing, “Two times two is four Three times two is six La la la.” Tense: Simple Past The structure of this passive voice sentence is: BE + PAST PARTICIPLE Student: Le Thi Khanh Ngoc Code:2320310691 Graduation Paper 53 Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Bao Yen, M.A In this sentence, I decided to translate it with its original structure because when translated into Vietnamese, this sentence still has a reasonable and smooth meaning  Translated version: Từ bao đời nay, người da trắng chuẩn bị vào đại học, dân chen chúc túp lều tranh ngân nga “Hai lần hai bốn Ba lần hai sáu La la la.”[P13] CHAPTER 5: DIFFICULTIES AND SOLUTIONS 5.1 Difficulties I have been studying translation subjects for years and this has helped me a lot in the process of translating this report However, when doing this paper, I realized that what I had learned is just a drop of water in the sea of knowledge Student: Le Thi Khanh Ngoc Code:2320310691 Graduation Paper 54 Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Bao Yen, M.A In term of vocabulary, there were many words with multiple meanings or no matching meaning found in English dictionaries Thus, I had to improve my vocabulary more In addition, the grammar, lexis, syntax or specific terms also affected the quality of suggested version As a result, perfectly translating a text from English into Vietnamese was a difficult task To get right, natural, smooth and interest suggest versions, translators were required to have deep specific knowledge about a variety of fields as well as understand structure, lexis used in the text I did not understand the context of the English sentence to be translated, because the English of native speakers is often not the same as Vietnamese; if a translator does not read as much of the document as the native writes does, it is difficult to guess the exact context in an English sentence Besides, I also faced many really difficult structures like relative clauses and adverbial clause, because this played an important rule to get an exact translation I thought those structures were very easy but really not what I thought There were many complex structures and phrases that were very hard or even obscure to analyse in this text One of the important things in translation is specific knowledge, it will help translators work easily So I asked my supervisor or search for information to have a clearer understanding 5.2 Solutions During the translation process, although I faced difficulties and challenges, I have learned from my experience from that difficulty Being a language student in general and a translation student in particular, besides the passion for foreign languages, I think each student should master their own knowledge in as many fields as possible and improve their translation skills day by day First, I read whole the original text to get the main idea of the author before translating I also focused and marked all the difficult words and phrases that I felt hard to translate I consulted some reliable dictionaries such as the Oxford Dictionary, the TFlat Dictionary, etc Then chose the most appropriate meaning for Student: Le Thi Khanh Ngoc Code:2320310691 Graduation Paper 55 Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Bao Yen, M.A the translation For words with multiple meaning, I have considered its context to provide the most suitable translation The second is about the structure I also highlighted the structures that made me confused or didn’t understand Then, I would read it carefully again and tried my best to translate them Finally, this the first time I have done my graduation thesis, so I not know how to present and format my graduation program scientifically So I found and read several kind of books related to this story and its historical background Then I scheduled my time to this thesis step by step and tried to finish on time CHAPTER 6: CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS 6.1 Summary of Findings During the translating process, I realize that I not get a good enough vocabulary in both SL and TL To become a good translator or an interpreter, at Student: Le Thi Khanh Ngoc Code:2320310691 Graduation Paper 56 Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Bao Yen, M.A least, I must have the specific knowledge about a certain field, especially after academic years at the Department of Foreign Language - Duy Tan University I also master my ability in analysis and expressions and even gain a lot of valuable experiences This will help me translate more correctly This is also one of the important experiences which I learn from my translation process In addition, you should improve your own abilitiy to read and understand the text well In that way, you can easily get the general idea as well as detailed information of the text, so that reproducing information will be more simple In my opinion, separating documents into smaller parts play an important role to complete your task Finally, I hope that I can get good grades and good assessments by Duy Tan University, Faculty of English Because this graduation paper not only reflects my own knowledges but also the valuable help from my teammates, my supervisor and all the teachers who have taught me during the past years 6.2 Suggestions As a senior in Duy Tan University at The Faculty of Foreign Language, I have some suggestions for all of you First, if you are a languages student, I think you should read more books, novels, articles and even magazines both in your mother tongue and the foreign language that you are learning It will reduce problems to which you can face during your study period Second, I think the university needs to enable students to apply and promote their knowledge by creating more condition Third, classroom translation courses are still quite limited in areas such as education, science, society, etc Therefore, I hope that the school will expand the field for students so that they can enhance their knowledge I think this expectation is actualizing in the next few years, because Duy Tan University set up more foreign languages, such as Chinese, Korean, Japanese, etc Finally, translation is a quite boring subject, so teachers should create an interested atmosphere to attract student’s attention Playing some Student: Le Thi Khanh Ngoc Code:2320310691 Graduation Paper 57 Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Bao Yen, M.A mini games, English songs or pop quizzes, and creating group tasks can be good ways to improve the interaction between students and the teacher in each lesson In conclusion, I hope all my recommendations will partly play a helpful role in your improvement of studying in Duy Tan University and your long-term scheme in the future Student: Le Thi Khanh Ngoc Code:2320310691 Graduation Paper Supervisor: Nguyen Thi Bao Yen, M.A REFERENCES I DICTIONARIES Oxford Dictionary (1948)
