Code: 2320315536 GRADUATION PAPER Supervisor: Le Thi Dieu Huong, M.A CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION Rationale Being of Faculty Of English of Duy Tan University, I have a lot of chances to have deep knowledge about several kinds of translation Especially, I have a great interest in the field of business Moreover, a translator is required not only to be good at the field of translating but also to thoroughly understand why she/he translates it Business is essential part of life - Human have always been doing business in away of trading It helps the society, and makes competition, which always helps to improve Business is to take responsibility for yourself and mostly for others who are involved as well It is a creative and competitive activity that continuously contributes to the shaping of our society By satisfying the needs and wants people cannot satisfy themselves, businesses improve the quality of life for people and create a higher standard of living I chose a chapter 17 “Your Career In Business” of the book “Introduction To Business” because I have found that choosing a career in business is extremely necessary and important This introductory business course gives you a detailed overview of all of the areas of commerce, it will guide you in selecting a major should you elect to get a degree in business Choosing a major in college is one of life’s true milestones Your major essentially determines how you will spend the next four decades of your life To conclude, I hope I have the best choice as well I hope that through the suggested version, I can provide some knowledge of business, give more information for everyone Student: Nguyen Thi Kieu Cac Code: 2320315536 GRADUATION PAPER Supervisor: Le Thi Dieu Huong, M.A Aims and Objectives 2.1 Aims This graduation paper has reflected my own ability in the past four years During those years, I received valuable support, help, encouragement of my supervisor, my teachers and friends at Duy Tan University It helps the translator with an overview of the translation process as analytical skills and translation skills Hence, it helps me avoid many faults in my translation process My graduation paper aims at: Understanding the idea of author to express the content to the reader Upgrading my translating and analyzing the complicate and main points 2.2 Objectives In order to support the major aims some following objective are posed for the study: To analyze complicated word, phrases, structures, contexts, etc To translate text smoothly and naturally To give some implications and solutions for teaching and learning English, especially translation To get more knowledge about translating a business documents Scope of the study This study focuses on translating and analyzing of the suggested version and some difficult vocabularies and structures of the chapter 17 “Your Career In Business” of the book “Introduction To Business” as well as giving some essential solutions to solve these problems 3.1 Text Features Chapters 17 of the book “Introduction To Business” is chosen for translation and analysis This chapter discusses your career in business, letting us know that a college degree unlocks doors to economic opportunity, helping us to choose the right career when entering college and developing interpersonal skills is key to your success Student: Nguyen Thi Kieu Cac Code: 2320315536 GRADUATION PAPER 59 Supervisor: Le Thi Dieu Huong, M.A this introductory business course : Subject gives : Verb you a detailed overview of all of the areas of commerce : Object Independent clause: “it will guide you in selecting a major should you elect to get a degree in business” My suggsted Translation: “Bởi khóa học kinh doanh nhập môn cung cấp cho bạn tất lĩnh vực thương mại, hướng dẫn bạn chọn chuyên ngành bạn chọn lấy kinh doanh.” 2.4.2 Complex sentences with Conditional Clauses: Conditional sentences are statements discussing known factors or hypothetical situations and their consequences Complete conditional sentences contain a conditional clause (often referred t as the if-clause) and the consequence There are four types of conditional osentences In many negative conditional sentences, there is an equivalent sentence construction using “unless” instead of “if not” Conditonal sentence type Zero Type Usage General trust A possible If clause verb Main clause verb tense tense If + S + S + V( s/es) V( s/es), If + S + S + Will/Can/Shall… + V0 condition and its V (s/es), Type probable result A hypothetical If + S + V2/Ved, condition and its Type probable result An unreal past S+Would/Could/Should… +VO If + S + Had + S condition and its V3/Ved , + Would/ Should…+ have + V3/Ved probable result Mixed Type in the past An unreal past If + S + Had + S + Would +Vo condition and its V3/Ved , Student: Nguyen Thi Kieu Cac Code: 2320315536 Could/ GRADUATION PAPER 60 Supervisor: Le Thi Dieu Huong, M.A probable result in the present Example 14: “If you cannot quickly express yourself with confidence, others will lose confidence in you.” [P15] This sentence expresses a possible condition and its probable result “If you cannot quickly express yourself with confidence” is the If clause and “others will lose confidence in you” is the main clauses In sentences with If- clauses, we translate them into Vietnamses as “Nếu… ” My suggsted Translation: “Nếu bạn khơng thể nhanh chóng tự tin thể thân với tự tin người khác lòng tin vào bạn.” Example 15: “If your career spans 45 years, you could earn close to $1 million more than a high school graduate.” [P4] This sentence is of type of the conditional sentence It expresses a hypothetical condition and its probable result Used to describe the fact, contrast or inability to take place in reality or the future “If your career spans 45 years” is the If clause and “you could earn close to $1 million more than a high school graduate” is the main clause In sentences with If- clause, we translation them into vietnamese as “Nếu…thì…” My suggsted Translation: “Nếu nghiệp bạn kéo dài 45 năm bạn kiếm gần triệu đô la so với sinh viên tốt nghiệp trung học.” Example 16: “The technique involves your requesting a meeting with the difficult person, whether he or she is having a conflict with you or with others.” [P30] In this sentence, “whether he or she is having a conflict with you or with others” is the If clause and “The technique involves your requesting a meeting with the difficult person” is the main clause Depending on the analysis, I translated it: Student: Nguyen Thi Kieu Cac Code: 2320315536 GRADUATION PAPER 61 Supervisor: Le Thi Dieu Huong, M.A My suggsted Translation: “Kỹ thuật liên quan đến việc bạn yêu cầu gặp gỡ với người khó tính, cho dù họ có xung đột với bạn với người khác.” 2.4.3 Complex sentences with Noun Clause: Noun clauses are subordinate clauses that acts as nouns Noun clauses begin with words such as how, that, what, whatever, when, where, whether, which, whichever, who, whoever, whom, whomever and why and can act as subjects, direct objects, indirect objects, predicate nominatives, or objects of a preposition Noun clause is a difficult part in English grammar, because it often makes us misunderstand the meaning of the sentence if we wrongly define the noun clause as well as its function When translating this document, I really got a lot of difficulties in this transferring process. It requires to be careful in analyzing Here are some examples about noun clauses and my suggested version Example 17: “Whether choosing a college or finding financial aid, you should understand how the planning process helps you accomplish your goals.” [P37] In this sentence, “how the planning process helps you accomplish your goals” is noun clause and funtions as object of the verb “understand” My suggsted Translation: “Cho dù chọn trường đại học hay tìm kiếm hỗ trợ tài chính, bạn nên hiểu q trình lập kế hoạch giúp bạn hồn thành mục tiêu nào.” Example 18: Use your imagination as to how you can get more done in less time [P62] In this sentence, the dependent clause “how you can get more done in less time” is noun clause function as a question in the sentence Depending on the analysis, I simply translated it: My suggsted Translation: “Hãy tưởng tượng cách làm bạn hồn thành nhiều việc thời gian ngắn hơn.” Student: Nguyen Thi Kieu Cac Code: 2320315536 GRADUATION PAPER 62 Supervisor: Le Thi Dieu Huong, M.A 2.4.4 Complex Sentence with relative clauses: A relative (or adjective) clause is a subordinate clause introduced by a relative pronoun or relative adverb It functions as an adjective; that is, it modifies, describes, identifies, or given futher information about a noun or pronoun in the main clause A relative clause comes right after the noun or pronoun it modifies, and it may be the subject or object of its own clause Defining clause: defining clause contain the necessary information to specify people or things they modify Non-defining clauses: non-defining clauses are used to add further information to the noun or pronoun they modify and can be omitted We use commas with non- defining clause and not separate the relative pronoun out of non-defining clause Example 19: “Show your appreciation to everyone who has helped you.” [P23] This sentence has a relative clause “who has helped you” The pronoun “who” is replaced for “everyone” Hence I decided to translate this sentence into Vietnamese as following: My suggsted Translation: Thể biết ơn bạn với tất người giúp bạn Example 20: “A plan is systematic, which means it relies on using a step-bystep procedure.” [P36] This sentence has a relative clause “which means it relies on using a step-bystep procedure” The pronoun “who” is replaced for “a plan” We can translate this sentence as “là kế hoạch mà có nghĩa dựa vào việc sử dụng quy trình bước” But to avoid an unnatural version, I decided to translate this sentence into Vietnamese as following: My suggsted Translation: “Một kế hoạch có hệ thống, có nghĩa dựa vào việc sử dụng quy trình bước.” Student: Nguyen Thi Kieu Cac Code: 2320315536 GRADUATION PAPER 63 Supervisor: Le Thi Dieu Huong, M.A 2.5 Sentences with Empty Subject A complete sentence must be by a subject and at least a verb However, in many situations, we not know the subject or the subject is too long, so we use empty subject “it” to replace Example 21: “People with great interpersonal skills will always better on and off the job than those who lack them It has been estimated that up to 90 percent of our workplace success depends on an understanding of other people.” [P9] In this sentence, the authors used empty subject to express their idea This form of sentence is not existed in Vietnamese, it is difficult to translate it Besides, if we literally translate it, like “nó ước tính rằng”, the suggested sentence is very rough and unnatural So, I apply the free translation method to transfer the idea, then I have a suggested version as follow My suggsted Translation: “Những người có kỹ giao tiếp liên nhân giỏi ln làm tốt hồn thành cơng việc nhanh người thiếu chúng Người ta ước tính có đến 90 phần trăm thành cơng nơi làm việc phụ thuộc vào hiểu biết người khác.” Example 22: “You have a right to your dreams, and you need them—even if there is little possibility that they will ever come true.” [P54] “There is” is a dummy subject; in this sentence it will not wrong if I translate this word as “Có” So to translate this sentence rightly and naturally, the literal translation was used to solve the problem My suggsted Translation: “Bạn có quyền ước mơ bạn cần chúng — điều có khả trở thành thực.” Example 22: “Planning is a skill that is useful in every area of your life It is something you have to pursue consciously and thoughtfully.” [P57] “It” in this sentence is used to introduce the real subject of the sentence when the real subject is “Planning” in the previous sentence to avoid the repetition Besides, if we literally translate it, like “nó bạn có” the suggested Student: Nguyen Thi Kieu Cac Code: 2320315536 GRADUATION PAPER 64 Supervisor: Le Thi Dieu Huong, M.A sentence is very rough and unnatural So, I apply the free translation method to transfer the idea, then I have a suggested version as follow My suggsted Translation: “Lập kế hoạch kỹ hữu ích lĩnh vực sống bạn Đó điều bạn phải theo đuổi cách có ý thức thận trọng.” Student: Nguyen Thi Kieu Cac Code: 2320315536 GRADUATION PAPER 65 Supervisor: Le Thi Dieu Huong, M.A CHAPTER 5: DIFFICULTIES AND SOLUTIONS DIFFICULTIES Translation gives me a lot of skills and background knowledge to solve a text, and that make me more familiar with the job However, I have realized that everything is not easy for a student in the real because what I have equipped learned at school is only a small part Every language has its particular characteristic and expression To get right, natural, smooth and interest suggested versions, translators are required to have specific knowledge about the field they are translating as well as understand structure, lexis used in the text What I have known, though, is not enough to cope with all the hard words, phrases and structures During the translation process of this graduation document, I still encountered several problems in vocabulary and grammar to give the best translation from English to Vietnamese First, though I learned a lot of translation subjects and got some business knowledge, it was not enough for me to have complete knowledge of this area It difficult for me when converting theses terms into TL The second difficulty is vocabulary In terms of vocabulary there are too many untranslatable and multi-meaning words in the text besides several words with meanings available in dictionaries Moreover, these one usually are not defind in the dictionary, so it is a challenge to translate these terms I spent more time looking up, reading on the internet, finding documents and using different dictionary so that I could find a suitable and correct words Especially, specialized words are the most difficult to translate As a result, some suggested versons are not smooth Of course, all things will be challenges for a person who is not a profesional translator Thirdly, in my research, I have met lots of difficult grammar It bring me lots of chanllenges on giving exact meanings because there are differences of grammar between languages Analyzing them required firm knowledge, great focus and carefulness My suggested version is therefore not smooth and normal, either I understand the ideas of the writers, but in Vietnamese I can not express them well Student: Nguyen Thi Kieu Cac Code: 2320315536 GRADUATION PAPER 66 Supervisor: Le Thi Dieu Huong, M.A In addition, I did not have enough skills to understand and translate some terms and phrases in the text It made it difficult for me to assign the specific fields proper sense Besides, some words have several meanings and their meanings depend on context So, they take me for days to find out the most appropriate meaning to the context As a result, my suggested version was also not smooth and natural enough In conclusion, understanding the meaning of the author and being good in grammar and lexis is necessary and significant, I had to learn, research and practice carefully, because it is not easy to successfully translate a text SOLUTIONS No difficulty is insurmountable, no challenge cannot be done Challenges always bring us many opportunities Thus, the difficulties I mentioned above are my chances In the face of difficulties, I tried so hard to solve by making use of what I have learned during four years, searching on the Internet, looking up the dictionaries, and asking for supervisor’s support to learn useful experience as a tool to become a good translator The followings are some of my solutions: Firstly, I was reading the entire chapter in order to understand its general substance Then, I found out some books and documents relating to the business and economics It helped me to understand and precisely choose the meaning of terms and phrases Secondly, dictionaries are indispensable to the translators, so I am not exception In the translation process, I had to use a lot of different dictionaries like Oxford Learner's Dictionary, Cambridge Dictionary, Lac Viet Dictionary, EnglishEnglish-Vietnamese Dictionary, ect , websites, books, newspapers to translate some difficult terms Some words are not available in the context, however, others not fit the context, I searched them in the internet to determine what they are Therefore, I have to scrutinize all meaning to the best choose suiting the context and Vietnamese style Student: Nguyen Thi Kieu Cac Code: 2320315536 GRADUATION PAPER 67 Supervisor: Le Thi Dieu Huong, M.A Thirdly, with the challenged structures, I would carefully analyse them to determine their elements It was very helpful for me to deeply understand structures of the sentences to avoid confused To so, I needed to study all the different structures I have studied, and also identify the exact types of sentences and clauses Particularly for sentences with several kinds of clauses, separating them was extremely important, so I did a lot of theory enquiries and examples about clauses Last but not least, I find the hearty help of my supervisor to be the most important She gave me so many helpful testimonials about what I could not translate and analyze In addition, this was the first time that I did a big project, so I did not know how to present and format my graduation paper scientifically So, her help was my most wonderful solution In brief, It is said that “Satisfaction lies in the effort, not in the attainment Full effort is full victory.” ― Mohandas Gandhi (Comment in the context of the public services in India) So, I tried my best to find out the way to resolve and give the best suggested version And after translating and analyzing the text, I thought that if I want my dream to be a good translator to come true, I need to study hard and hard to upgrade all the essential skills Student: Nguyen Thi Kieu Cac Code: 2320315536 GRADUATION PAPER 68 Supervisor: Le Thi Dieu Huong, M.A CHAPTER 6: CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTIONS SUGGESTION 1.1 Summary of Findings My graduation paper provides the best performance opportunity for me to define what my standard is In the process of completing my graduation paper, I realized that I had many defects and I understand that what I have gained in the great education is just a small part of that I have gained a lot of valuable experience in the translation process In the process of translating I know it is very important and necessary to develop the vocabulary Doing translation does not mean that we are merely looking up the words in the dictionary and translating them, but to express the idea of the author Especially, we must study carefully the structure, syntax, semantic etc to understand the idea of author and reproduce the information in the TL Besides, the structures in this chapter, such as the sentences in passive voice, the complex, compound, and compound-complex sentences are very difficult While I have learned about them at Duy Tan University in four years, I not have enough confidence to interpret and evaluate them either It also allows me to acquire some more knowledge of advanced English grammar and develop some translation skills Furthermore, when translating about a certain field, specialized knowledge about that field plays a very important role for us to have an accurate translation Therefore, the translator must thoroughly study that field with the aim of preparing the background knowledge to understand and express the author's intention However, as you know, business is not my major so I faced up with many difficulties After a long time trying to search and study information about this field, I also could translate rightly some specific term Of course, this way my valuable experience After all, I have learned many valuable lessons and experiences during this time, I hope that what I have tried and done will be Duy Tan University, English Student: Nguyen Thi Kieu Cac Code: 2320315536 GRADUATION PAPER 69 Supervisor: Le Thi Dieu Huong, M.A Faculty, teachers and all the teachers who have taught me during the past years recognized 1.2 Suggestion 1.2.1 Implications for learning I have some suggestions for the languages learner and I hope my suggestions will be useful: At first, I think it is essential to equip students with knowledge because in the future, students will encounter many documents in many different fields, so having a background knowledge of that field will help you avoid surprises and less difficulty In addition, students can develop information that applies to all fields in general and, in particular, to translation This helps us prevent other confusions when we meet in the translation process concering of varius fields Furthermore, mastering the structure, syntax, semantic will help you understand easily the idea of author, that limits confused and mistakes in the translation process Besides, I think you should read more books, articles, novels and even magazines both in your mother tongue and the foreign language that you are learning to become a good translator This is not only help you gain more useful knowledge but it is also a good way to increase your vocabulary Relying on that will help them translate more naturally, smoothly and interested In addition, reading comprehension is one skill that the students must improve to become a good translator You should improve your own abilitiy to read and understand the text well In that way, they can deeply understand the topic that the author mentioned to avoid the mistakes in the translation process 1.2.2 Implications for teaching Besides some suggestions for the language learners, I would like to give some implications for teaching in Duy Tan University in general and the English Faculty in particular Because nowadays, translation and interpretation is really an Student: Nguyen Thi Kieu Cac Code: 2320315536 GRADUATION PAPER 70 Supervisor: Le Thi Dieu Huong, M.A important subject and offers many job opportunities for students Thus the teachers should focus on how to teach more effectively and interestedly Firstly, I think that translation is an important subject It allows the students to exercise their skills in translation The department should therefore increase time for this subject, so that students can practice more In addition, some major subjects such as Translation Theory, Translation and , Advances Grammar and Syntax should be concerned because the are very indispensable to students during the process of doing the graduation paper Secondly, most students have grammar structures issue due to the variations between the source language and the target language For this reason, we not only have in-depth information about grammar systems, but we also have to learn both the concepts and methods in the translation We will need to learn how to evaluate vocabulary, structure, and so forth in order to create the best translation Thirdly, my suggestion is for the department to include second foreign languages in its curriculum and more optional We should feel comfortable to express ourselves if we research with our passions, and then the outcome will be much better Finally, I think translation is a quite boring subject, so teacher should create an interested atmosphere to attract student’s attention in the teaching process telling a short story, playing some mini game, and creating competition among groups can be good ways to increase the interaction between student and the teacher in each lesson CONCLUSION After finishing my graduation paper, I have taken out lots of valuable and useful experience During the time I did my research, some difficult words or phrases as well as complex structures were a major hurdle for me I cannot accurately convey all of them into equivalent Vietnamese As a student, due to limited time and expertise, there will definitely be errors in my graduation paper I Student: Nguyen Thi Kieu Cac Code: 2320315536 GRADUATION PAPER 71 Supervisor: Le Thi Dieu Huong, M.A hope to receive all objective and sympathetic comments from all teachers and board teachers Once again, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to my supervisor Ms Le Thi Dieu Huong as well as all my friends for their enthusiastic supports, suggestions, and encouragement while I did this graduation paper At last, I
