of data has moved to the forefront of technology and business Massive amounts of data are collected and used for numerous and varied reasons Data is used to aid in decision-making, for learning/training of human capital and machines (machine learning), and for the accumulation of knowledge toward future goals and advancements in business and new or expanded technologies The chapters in this book explore aspects of data modeling, knowledge and information management, learning and training of human capital, and the experiences of information technology workers The growing use of data for modeling, whether it is behavior, risk, or income, is a key component of modern business Through technological advances, organizations continue to grow and expand the solutions and services offered to customers—this impacts internal staff (human capital) as it relates to how work is conducted (and the challenges that result from a technologyinfused work environment) Organizations, both academic and corporate, must also grapple with how best learning will be created and provisioned for human capital as well as how internal human capital training (delivery and timing) impacts the ability to support customers and new technologies Data, learning, and information and resource management are part of every component of life There are many points of data used by individuals, every day The data is based on gained knowledge from experience, research, structured (informed, planned) and unstructured (learned by doing) training and usage of tools (i.e., products, solutions, observations, etc.) Data usage, knowledge, and information management affects individuals in one way or another and in all walks of life WHO SHOULD READ THIS BOOK? The topics included in this book may be useful for individuals, businesses, and technical enterprises focused on the use of data to extend and support current and future human capital, business practices, and technological advances This book is intended for academics, practitioners, business and IT thought leaders, business and Preface IT professionals, and anyone who is interested in examining knowledge discovery and management, big data usage and modeling, as well as resource training and management ORGANIZATION OF THE BOOK The chapters in this book explore who is doing the work and the challenges that workers encounter, how work is accomplished, the ways in which human and information resources are managed, and data optimization case studies that represent how data may be modeled and resourced for solution expansion and decision-making: • • • Knowledge/Information Technology Workers: The experiences of knowledge/information technology workers, whether individually or in teams, shape the technology work itself through workplace culture and practices; Knowledge Discovery and Information Resources Management: The development and application of decision support models, communication to enable successful organizational change, and best practices and advances in technology-enabled learning are challenges faced by many of today’s organizations; Optimizing Data: The use of large volumes of data to model current and future capabilities, institute new methods of information and data handling, and support decision science for decision-making can provide a critical advantage for corporations seeking to leverage data for competitive advantage Chapter 1: Grief and the Psychological Transition Process Among Information Technology Team Members (Letitia Larry) Change is a constant in most organizations Organizations implement change for various reasons – to improve, react, or reinvent either their product or the way that business is conducted Information technology is often critical to the dynamic change process that includes working with people, processes, and systems The focus of the interview-based study of health information technology/information technology workers represented in this chapter is to describe the transition process inherent to organizational change events as it relates to the experiences of individuals within information technology teams responsible for implementing the change In this chapter, the author explores the premise that the psychological transition process of information technology team members is key to achieving successful change Specifically, the success of technology changes in organizations depends on how information technology teams tasked with implementing the change appreciate ix Preface the value proposition posed by the change and subsequently respond to it The author concludes the chapter with multiple recommendations to support the transition of information technology teams during and after a change effort Chapter 2: Re-Defining Work-Life Boundaries – Individual, Organizational, and National Policy Implications (Donna Weaver McCloskey) The increase in mobile computing has shaped the work and private lives of knowledge workers due to the erosion of temporal and physical boundaries between work and personal time and space Prior research categorized the work-life boundary in terms of segmentation and integration but the author suggests that with the rise of mobile technology, the work-life boundary is comprised of three dimensions—schedule flexibility, home boundary permeability, and work boundary permeability In this literature-based chapter, the author highlights relevant research studies as a foundation for addressing work-life boundaries from individual, organizational, and national policy perspectives Even though several countries have made work-life balance issues part of their legislative agendas, the author advocates for formal and informal cultural changes to transform work-life conflict into work-life harmony Chapter 3: User-Created Online Learning Videos – Collaborative Knowledge Construction Through Participatory Design (Adesola Olulayo Ogundimu) Learning has been defined as the transfer of information for the creation and/or extension of knowledge Learning was viewed as a distinct form – one in which knowledge was accessed through mediums, artifacts, repositories, and knowledge infrastructures that were bound by space and location Technological advances have increased opportunities through which knowledge is discovered, created, and transferred In this chapter, the author builds upon relevant literature to expand methods for knowledge transfer that once focused on individual processes toward more collaborative, collectively-constructed learning environments The author advances participatory design, a humanistic approach to learning that is focused on learning or user-focused design and the co-creation of the learning environment itself Further, the author suggests that participatory design facilitates the application of best practices in the creation of online learning videos x
